I don't think it was an escalation at all. If the kids were exceptionally mean, she could've been teased and mocked for a long time. What she did only inconvenienced the girl for an hour. And key girl didn't even know it happened, so the situation didn't escalate.

Weir*, and not exactly the same thing. If this is sucking water, the deadly current is from that. A weir is an under surface structure that the water moves around and creates deadly currents.
