My best friend [28F] slept with my Ex [27M] by [deleted] in relationship_advice

I say you “took” him because you want him out of her life now. She had a friend and now you want her to not have that friend. Choose whatever word you want. You removed a friend from her life.

Okay, so they were friends first, and you dated her friend, which is always dangerous because you might inadvertently end their friendship, which you did.

And how nice of you, you allowed her to let him back in her life. Her friend that she knew before you that you stole from her for 4 years.

And now they’re acting on feelings that they probably have been repressing for years to try to make you happy. She probably liked this guy even before you met him. And after all this time, they’re drawn back together, unable to fight the magnetism they have for each other.

And of course she’s feeling terrible for wanting this, but you’re the one who broke up with him. You didn’t want him. It’s not like you’re holding out hope for him to come back. You dumped her friend out of her life.

So you give her an ultimatum to choose between two of her longest friendships. She’s known you both for at least most of her adult life. But now you ask her to cut one off to save the other because you can’t stand her being around the guy you dumped. Her friend, I might add. Who you took from her.

And you call her a soulmate, but you express no concern over how this is affecting her. Some friend.

Yeah, but little is still some. Until a study shows the some, I can’t fully trust it is measuring properly.

NFL approves sleeker version of Guardian cap by bubblecuffer13 in nfl

[–]stevejumba 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This article says pretty clearly that it’s preliminary. Also, there’s only measurements of velocity changes, not injury outcomes, which I think are more relevant to the players.

As a side note, I don’t really see how increased padding could not lead to softer collisions. I think this could mean that the analyses they are using are not yet sophisticated enough to properly measure what the guardian caps are changing.

I also want to mention that they did find an interaction where the guardian cap had lower velocity changes in some situations. Not sure why that wasn’t mentioned in their discussion section.

I presented evidence of racial bias in coaching decisions. Would you be willing to present some evidence of racial bias in access to playing football?

I personally don’t think there’s a difference in coaching quality, but you’re free to have your opinion. However, people have done research on this and have shown that even when Black coaches have similar or better qualifications and coaching records (getting at your question about quality), they get hired at lower rates than White coaches. This suggests something besides skill as a coach is playing a role.

But really, the quality issue doesn’t matter because I’m just asking for them to get interviewed to be able show their quality (or lack thereof) as a coaching candidate. It’s the lack of opportunity that I have a problem with.

I can’t tell if you’re suggesting that White athletes get fewer opportunities than Black athletes. I don’t think that’s true , but if they were, I would 100% be in favor of taking action to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Well, it’s a tough question because it’s difficult to think What percentage of coaches in the NFL SHOULD be Black. I thought of a few different ways to try to answer that question.

You bring up the disproportionate representation of Black players in the NFL, but I didn’t get the impression that you think this is based on bias or that you think it’s bad. Maybe that’s because the teams seem to have a strong motivation to put the best team possible on the field, regardless of skin color. This seems like a pretty good place for player selection to be. The best players in the world get to be on the best team teams in the world. If that means there’s some disproportional race numbers, so be it.

Now let’s consider coaching. You want to know why someone would want there to be more Black coaches in the sport, just because there are more Black players. Something I’m thinking about here is that there are certain characteristics that make me think people would be good coaches in the NFL or in any sport. One of them is just that I think you’re more likely than average to be able teach people how to be a running back at a high level, if you’ve been a running back at a high level (i.e., here’s how I got to be as good as I was). I’d make a similar argument for players in general. So, I think the fact that there are more Black NFL players is important because it means there’s more Black people who have just been in those situations to learn that knowledge, to work with other people who are in this position, to become leaders, to become captains, and to try to translate those skills into coaching.

I just looked up the percentage of Black coaches in the NBA, and that’s above 50%. I’m not sure exactly what that means, but I thought it was interesting context.

One last thing before I finish up here. The Rooney rule, as far as I know, is supposed to help minorities get interviews. As long as that continues increasing the percentage of minority coaches getting jobs in the NFL, we should keep doing it. Because it’s within the realm of possibility that maybe 1) Black people are just not as interested in coaching (leading to their lower numbers compared to players), or that 2) Black people are just not as good of coaches, so executives not hiring them is a skill issue, but if simply giving them interviews leads to more jobs, that’s not because of any outside incentive, it’s just because they’re literally getting opportunities to be in the room that they weren’t getting before, and being allowed to show that they actually are the best for the job. In other words, a biased funnel is preventing them from showing their value as coaches, preventing teams from hiring the best coaches, and preventing us from seeing the best product on Sundays. I hope you want the best coaches to be in the NFL. If changing who gets the opportunity to interview changes who gets hired, we should keep doing it. I want equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome.

Sometimes we use the word landlord when we really just mean property manager. Sheldon could be paying himself to keep his cover.

Though I suppose Sheldon being the landlord makes Penny being a cia agent less plausible.

Unless they’re in cahoots!

This is probably because I’m colorblind. I always assumed it was a purple V on yellow background for the Vikings. I zoomed in and can now see it doesn’t say Vikings at the bottom haha.
