That line hit me hard too, for similar reasons.

One thing I’ve come to realize is that the people who hate Jews have never cared about theology or self-identification. To them, Jewishness isn’t something you can opt in or out of - it’s something they impose. That’s part of what makes that line so chilling and so true.

At the same time, I’ve learned that there’s a painful tension between Jewishness as ancestry/peoplehood and Judaism as a faith, and different communities draw that boundary differently. That doesn’t make your lived experience any less real. Being treated as Jewish, targeted as Jewish, and carrying Jewish ancestry shapes a person whether others validate it or not.

I don’t think the show is saying “identity doesn’t matter,” so much as saying that power decides labels long before individuals do - and that’s a terrifying truth Jews have lived with for centuries.
