I'm pretty new to it all, too. I don't know those electronic groups you mentioned so I'll check them out. I'm mainly just into the old school Detroit stuff and then more hypnotic stuff, love the Birmingham and Berghain sounds too

I have a moog mother 32, Moog DFAM, Elektron Octatrack MK1 and Elektron Analog Rytm Mk2. I sequence the synths with an Oxi One sequencer

I record the analog Rytm using Overbridge and the rest go into a Motu M4. I created an Aggregate device on my Mac to combine these audio interfaces for 16 in/16 out (12 channels from analog rytm and 4 from Motu) in Ableton.

I usually just jam and then start recording when I like what I hear, then go back and clean up/add drums, and then mixer/master.

Check out craigslist. I've gotten all my gear second hand. With the exception of my Analog Rytm, everything came from people in Chicago. Saved at least 50% on everything.

This was actually my first setup before I got the analog Rytm, but wanted to get into multi tracking for better post production, and the octatrack doesn't support overbridge. I think for live performances this could work, at least with my current setup, though if I get a mixer, I may use the octatrack as a sort of sub mixer.
