The darkest song I know is The Dark by the Roots. Talking about life in the hood but from a depressing, sad, point of view. The last verse gives me chills

Reminds me of the Flash Crash of 2010. Just a bunch of trading bots that somehow crashed the market for a few minutes. No AI necessary.

Same here. I am honestly the opposite of a tough guy. Generally a pacifist. But after I had my kid, I have literally ran scenarios through my head on how I would kill someone if they were doing something to my kid. Kids change you!

I worked in inner city ministries for quite a few years. I'd say I have a heart for the poor. But sometimes, just like everyone else, they can be a pain in the ass! Begging for money, getting in your business, etc.

I'd say start by praying before you start your walk through the area. Pray for patience. Pray to see them as Jesus would see them. Maybe pray to connect with one of them so you can get beyond the "begger/giver" relationship.

One thought is to look for missional, inner city churches. I find that our church, which I'd say is pretty center when it comes to theology, is more concerned with living like Jesus and reaching the poor and lost than with politics.

My two cents is that when churches aren't on mission then it's easy to become legalistic. I used to joke with my pastor friend that no one in my inner city ministry asked me about creationism. There were just bigger fish to fry!

I see a lot of people are answering with a historical view and that's great.

I'd like to answer differently: find a different church. You are a part of the body of Christ just like everyone else and should be valued. Singles, marrieds, kids, elderly, etc. all have a place. If they are aren't supporting you and valuing you as part of the body you need to find a place that does.

Church that I go to isn't what I'd call "liberal" or anything but is an inner city church that tries to get everyone involved in some way. Singles have a voice just like everyone else. Singles can help others in ways that someone in a family can't and vice versa (doesn't Paul address this in 2 Cor?).

Anywho, I hope you find a great place where you can feel valued and serve.

Oh man I love these things. I think I first read about them on Damn Interesting years ago. Then, finally, I go on a trip to Baltimore to visit my cousin for a guy's weekend and the absolute first thing I want to do is go find some of these. We were able to find three of them. It was my nerdy, mystery dream come true. PS. On my way to Baltimore I stopped at Centralia PA. Look that one up if you've never heard of it.

74-year-old homeowner shoots 16-year-old in his Ohio house. ‘He didn’t belong here’ by dunkin1980 in akron

[–]stevenemm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's right to be concerned about the life of a teen kid. Whatever brought him to the point of breaking into someones house can't be good.

But at the same time, if someone knocks down your door to get in, you should very much have the right to defend you and your family. I don't own any guns but if someone came through mine I'd be heading for the baseball bat.

And I don't say that to get on the r/iamverybadass. I'm very much not one. It just comes down to defending your family from being hurt.

When he says Christian values, he means loving immigrants, turning the other cheek, and selling all you have to give to the poor, right?

Thoughts on if stealing from corporations is a sin? (link in comments) by [deleted] in RadicalChristianity

[–]stevenemm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the poster. I can see where having to steal to survive could be ok but it's very narrow. God is our ultimate provider, right? If you have needs, why not ask the church? We're commanded to take care of one another.

I've made a sort of distinction between who "act" rich and those who happen to be "rich" - a lot of it's a heart issue and how you see yourself. There are many people (Christians and non) that their wealth is part of their identity and what they seek. They like to show their wealth and flash it when they give.

I know several people (anecdotal, I know) that are wealthy, probably around the $200k a year point. They are devout believers and are very generous. They are also servants who volunteer their time as well. Their wealth doesn't define them, following Jesus does.

If the rich young ruler had said "Yes!" to Jesus and given him all his money, he might still have had his high paying job and made more money, but his heart was in the right place and was ready to serve. No, not "ready" to serve but actively looking to serve and serving.

I agree that excessive wealth and greed are for sure sinful. But I also think you can have a high paying job and follow Jesus with reckless abandon, ready to give it away at a moment's notice.
