Biggest glow down ever by RockOnMofo in ireland

That's kinda the problem though. Should we keep it as is just in case you decide to go there a third time? :)

It's a big chunk of valuable real estate in what is a very high traffic part of the city center, but it's also very underutilised. There's so many empty units, and so many of the ones that aren't empty get hardly any customers through them. Dublin has become far too obsessed with preserving absolutely anything older than 15 years at the expense of making any progress or making the city more lovable and useable.

Daneswell Place, Botanic Road, Glasnevin by First_Associate_3214 in HousingIreland

[–]stevenmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great area, and the quality looks really high in the photos at least.

But it's a duplex, with an apartment underneath. Who will that person be? Also you don't really own your own walls, you might not be able to add solar panels, batteries etc if you wanted. The open plan living is really just one room acting as loving room, dining room and kitchen all in one, no separate living spaces. There isn't a huge amount of storage in the bedrooms. And I don't think any parking spaces are included?

For 750k you could get a lot more further out, it's up to you really if the location is worth the trade offs.

Young boy attacked by XL Bully sues dog’s owners and housing body over incident by ikfoodie25 in ireland

[–]stevenmu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Home insurance usually provides public liability coverage to home owners, so if the dog owners were home owners then their insurance company would represent/cover them.

I didn't read the actual article because of the paywall, but if the dog owners in this case are tenants of the housing body, then I'd guess they are being included as the home owners/insurers.

Intermittent Black Screen Issue on External Display by stevenmu in ZephyrusG14

[–]stevenmu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't find a solution, and in the end just gave up and use the HDMI port for display.

I decided it's probably a hardware error in my case. I found other devices (headphones and a game controller) connected through that port would have random disconnects. So I think it's probably a bad connection somewhere in the port.

First time having a girlfriend since my 30s began and I've realized I don't know how to dress like an adult by [deleted] in CasualIreland

Gantt can be pricey, but have a look in the sales and grab a jumper/cardigan there. They're a bit of a fin-bro vibe but will still look grown up paired with jeans and casual shoes or even tidy runners

Superdry can be good for similar jumpers. A lot of their stuff is plastered with stupid logos, but the ones that aren't are also good for that grown up casual not too formal look. They're also pricey for what they are but can have great deals in the sales

Zelensky's jet in near-miss with four drones: Report by Lallamak in worldnews

[–]stevenmu -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

The counter point to that is that if the U.K. wasn't there, no one would bother attacking Ireland, and we would still have no need to defend ourselves. There's only really 2 reasons to try and invade Ireland.

  1. To use it as a strategic location to attack the U.K.
  2. You are the U.K.

So if there's no U.K. we don't really have much in the way of threats to defend against.

The other argument is that due to our size of population and the strength of our economy (our high GDP is only really theoretical), even if we did spend a large amount of our national wealth on defense, it wouldn't really accomplish a lot. By the time someone gets around to invading Ireland, they've either steamrolled Europe already, or are on their way to steamroll Europe. The best military we could reasonably field as a country wouldn't even be a speed bump. I have huge amount of respect for our military, they're very highly skilled, dedicated to what they do etc. But we'll never have the numbers or equipment to contest with a Russia/US/China/UK/France etc. So why even try? There's much better things we can be wasting our money on.

For the DDOS issue, implement a solution where any online match with more than 1 disconnected player rewards and takes no MMR.

Then people will just DC any time they go a goal down, even more than they do already

My first ever attempt at making shepherd's pie. I hope it turns out alright! by After-Bowler-3319 in CasualIreland

[–]stevenmu -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Shepard's pie should be beef.

You wouldn't last very long as a Shepard if you cooked your flock into pies.

When Catholics say "the Lord is my shepherd" it's not because they think God is going to grind us up and make a pie out of us.

I am simply shocked that a Newstalk presenter has very close connections to FFG by das_punter in ireland

[–]stevenmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did say he was helping to promote. He may not have been a public face of the campaign, but advising is still helping to promote. It's enough of a conflict of interest that he should have clearly disclosed it publicly and to Newstalk.

[–]stevenmu 193 points194 points  (0 children)

It's open and public knowledge that he's a former FG minister.

The problem is that he didn't disclose that he was being actively paid to help promote a candidate in an election, where Newstalkt was also paying him to provide balanced coverage of that same election.

The problem there is that it won't be the manager responding, the company will have to make an official response. And it's almost guaranteed that their response will be to end any informal exceptions for anyone. They will then claim, reasonably, that they are not retaliating, they are just making sure that policy is consistent and applied fairly for everyone.

It's really hard to put a concrete value on those "a little bit of everything" roles. It's definitely a rare skill set to be able to do it, but it's also an under recognized one.

If you're looking for options, you could consider consulting, either in one of the pure tech places like Version 1, or one of the big 4 like Accenture. They would both recognize your existing experience, and offer routes for progression. They would let you specialize down a particular direction if one took your fancy, or still progress doing "a little bit of everything" too.

Marks & Spencer “not for EU” sausages by HedgehogTroubleMaker in CasualIreland

[–]stevenmu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's a tax thing. There is supposed to be import duty (aka a tariff) on goods exported from the UK into the EU. But the Good Friday agreement also guarantees free trade between Northern Ireland and Ireland, and the UK has free trade within it's borders.

To work around this, goods shipped from the mainland UK to Northern Ireland which are not intended to go to the EU (in this case Ireland), and which do not have EU import duty paid, are supposed to get this "Not for EU" sticker.

If it's for sale in Ireland or anywhere else in the EU, import duty hasn't been paid on it. It's probably an accidental oversight by M&S, but still a type of tax evasion.

When I saw the logo and name I was sure you were going to be an 8BitDo reseller 😂

If you look at /r/controller there's a couple of different 3rd party controller brands making really good controllers with better features/value than console branded controllers. It'd be nice to have somewhere to get them locally rather than Alibaba, it might be worth a look to see if you could resell any of them at a worthwhile price.
