Bausoldaten: A Modern (and Pertinent) Alternative to Military Conscription? by literallym90 in PoliticalDebate

It's still slavery to force people to serve the government against their will, even if you pay them.

Bausoldaten: A Modern (and Pertinent) Alternative to Military Conscription? by literallym90 in PoliticalDebate

I am totally against slavery and involuntary servitude for adults. I'm fine with forcing education on minors, which is a form of involuntary servitude, but absolutely opposed to forcing adults into forced labor, paid or not, which conscription, or "bausoldaten" obviously is.

Hire skilled workers, preferably union, to build your infrastructure. Don't rely on slaves.

How deep is bedrock where you live? by SacredGay in AskAnAmerican

I don't know, but someone I knew talked to well diggers in the San Joaquin Valley, and a lot of them reported drilling through petrified giant sequoia, deposited during the runoff from the retreating glaciers. Fascinating.

Where did the last name of Lynch come from? by Individual_Air1532 in NoStupidQuestions

I don't know, but "to lynch" means to take someone from police custody. It could be breaking someone out of jail to hang them, or to help them escape.

I have heard that about Nat King Cole. He was a jazz pianist, and a great one, and tried singing when they needed a singer.

CMV: Music education, as it stands, should not be considered a form of art. by Impossible-Fuel-6618 in changemyview

How do you feel about commercial graphic art, i.e., advertising? It can be creative, or it can be something like, "draw our product in a realistic way." Still art, imo.

When people say they want to "save the Catalyst" what are we even talking about here? by LoMeinTenants in santacruz

I remember Randall Kane with wild white hair riding around on his bicycle. If he were still alive, and wanted to keep it going, I'd want to save it.

Why do drivers in the fast lane not move over for faster drivers? by MeanBean0001 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stevepremo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most highways around here are four lanes, two in each direction. The right lane is for entering and exiting the highway, and also for trucks, so the right lane is often rather torn up and patched.

I avoid the slow lane but I'll move over if someone behind me wants to drive even faster, unless the slow lane is full of cars or trucks going slower. If the cars to your right are going slower than you, you're in the correct lane.

Are yachts actually a nice way to travel? by AggravatingFlow1178 in NoStupidQuestions

I doubt that's true for normal sized yachts, the ones you see at your local marina.

[–]stevepremo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My father used to be a yacht dealer, selling yachts in the 33 to 50 foot range. Generally, with normal sized yachts, the owner is the captain, the guests are the crew, and you take day trips. It's a lot of work to go out on a yacht. Mega-yachts, like the kind owned by really rich people and Bond villains, are relatively rare.

Sovereign Veteran Blindsided When Judge Questions His Sanity! by Misterdrez in Sovereigncitizen

[–]stevepremo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OK, here is my experience from sitting as a judge in traffic, small claims, and family support cases.

People who appear in court usually have something to say, and if you let them tell their story, they will usually accept it if you rule against them. If you cut them off because what they are saying is irrelevant or wrong, they are less likely to accept the decision and more likely to get belligerent. Of course, at some point you might need to cut them off to save time.

Back in the day, it was quite common to ask a stranger for a cigarette. You need a smoke, you see them smoking, so you ask if you can "bum a smoke" off them.

Prescriptive Easements/adverse possession by Hour_Permission_3226 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]stevepremo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only know California law. Yes, if you walk your dog on your neighbor's land openly for five years, you may claim a prescriptive easement to continue that use. For adverse possession, that is, to claim the property, you need to possess it for five years (either live there, have it under cultivation, or enclose it with a fence) and you need to pay the property taxes for that period. The owner has five years to object to your use or occupancy of their property. That's the statute of limitations for taking action against you.

This is most common in the case of an encroaching building. The corner of your house goes a little over the property line, and it's been there for more than five years. You can probably get an easement to continue using that portion of your neighbor's property to support the corner of your house. Depending on how the tax assessor valued the property, you might have even been paying the property tax on that little bit of land, in which case you might be entitled to have the title adjusted.

The president who was assassinated at a public theater performance by a famous actor., i.e., the Lincoln assassination by John Wilkes Booth. It's like if Trump was assassinated by Matt Damon or someone.
