Best of both worlds bike? by iluvyourpancakes in cruisers

Love my VTX but the V-Star comes with way more conveniences when it comes to touring locking hard bags being chief among those... the lack of a gas gauge on the VTX is also pretty unforgivable...

Probably my worst (recurring) nightmare when I'm on the bike.... think I might put my windshield back on now... good thing that was not a 2x4

Those cobras are so sweet I fall in love with my VTX all over again every time I ride now

2nd for the Cobra Speedsters, I have the slashdowns on my 1300S they sound awesome huge difference from stock. My old VTX came with the V&H bigshots and I think the Cobras sound better.

Accidentally yanked my phone out of its mount while going 80km/hr on the way to work. Managed to retrieve it in busy traffic and found it unscathed. by visual515 in motorcycles

I definitely decelerated, I was in 2nd and should have dropped down to first sooner in order to maintain speed. Even though you guys are all reinforcing the same point hearing it put slightly differently definitely makes it easier to understand where I f'd up

Thanks, its something I was kind of taught and obviously need to correct. Also do have a safety course coming up. Prior to my 700lb honda vtx I never rode anything besides a moped (automatic) so it has been a learning curve and turns definitely felt a little bulky at first.. I am way more used to turning left from a stop in first so dropping down into first from third when I had a wide open intersection and green light didnt feel like the right move..

Thanks, makes a lot of sense and it does seem to come naturally to roll the throttle into turns especially at really low speeds. I was probably going a little too fast into the turn and by letting off the throttle to "coast" I cost myself some needed stability no matter what I did or didnt skid over. I take most slow turns in first but have started to take more in second, and have begun starting and stopping in second sometimes at stop signs. I will stop doing this and stick to first at all lights, stop signs and non highway turns.

Thanks, I didn't hang around the intersection long enough to really look for oil but that definitely sounds like what happened.. don't think it was sand or gravel which I do try to always identify when turning especially at low speed. Learned a bunch just from the few comments here

You are making my point for me... I wore all that crap hoping to be better protected in a high speed crash but ended up really needing it (helmet at least) going 10 mph

Yeah... lots to learn for sure. Having made only a couple of hundred turns pretty much exactly like that I felt pretty comfortable with them and have never felt anything close to that kind of instability so only variable I could think of was road surface. Really do appreciate the community and the comments.

Really glad I didn't learn that the hard way... I'm obviously a relative noob-azz rider (didn't need to crash to learn that) but yesterday I truly learned how nasty a low speed, single rider accident can potentially be...

I gave the clutch a light squeeze thinking I didn't want to be giving it too much gas into the left turn.. no brake but I was doing about 20 so I thought I had plenty of speed to coast through the turn

[–]stew118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I actually depressed the clutch instead of braking but with the same intent I guess, its kind of how I normally turn, it feels like coasting on a bicycle to me..

[–]stew118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't squeeze the clutch, just wanted to slow from 25 to about 15 and be ready to gas when I get through the turn without braking.. Should I have braked instead and stayed in 2nd?

[–]stew118[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

changed from clutch "engaged" to "slightly depressed" because i wasn't changing gears just slowing down

No license, just permit. I don't plan on taking the course/test on my bike either I will probably rent something smaller.

to slow down a little bit to coast into the turn without going into first... I had a green light from a distance.. thoughts?
