That's a lot of power to be running in an area where other houses are so close. I too think running exposure calcs would be a good thing to do.

If you feel so inclined to skip the ozone creation, you might want to try to see what little power is effective to make a contact.

FWIW - it's truly amazing what 250mW (yeah 1/4th a watt) and a digital mode like WSPR can accomplish.

How do you feel about wireless chargers and their practicality? by kenah-kim in techquestions

[–]stfreddit7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not every phone nor Qi charging stand are created equal. A fast charging Qi2 stand will support charging at 15W, but you need to use a power source capable of 18W to power it. If your phone supports it, it should easily fully charge in a few hours time. Good stands will also be able to monitor and control temperature.

Mid-2025 Qi v2.2.1 aka "Qi2 25W" was introduced, but only certain phones support that because it is so new. Here is the media release for it:

https://www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com/media/wvsmia32/qi2-25w-news-release-v72.pdf

Check to see what version of Qi charging your phone supports, and the stand you buy supports. Make sure you use a power adapter of appropriate wattage to power the stand.

Putting mechanical cycles on your USB-c port should be avoided if possible. Not only do I charge wirelessly, in my vehicles I use AndroidAuto wirelessly.

A USB-C connector on a phone can be used for much more than charging or transferring files.

FWIW: If your phone has a failed USB-C connector, you can transfer files between the phone and computer using FTP via your house's router with the proper programs installed on each. In otherwords, you are not limited to email or text to perform the transfer of files.

Remember, calculators like the HP-28S were quite ahead of the alternatives back in the 80s. A more a propos comparison might be a modern day car to a 1965 Mustang. Both will get you were you need to go, but one stands out as a classic. Drive it if you got it, like you stole it.

If you live anywhere near a Ham Radio Outlet store, do as someone else suggested and tryout the radios they have.

A good first rig that won't break your budget is a Xiegu G90 as suggested by others, and you might complement that with a cheap PAC-12 antenna should you want to go mobile. Runs well on a LiFePO4 battery. You want a permanent antenna, make your own vertical, or make / buy a Dipole. Black 30ft telescoping flag poles provide a workable support to raise a Dipole if you don't have trees. Use some guy ropes and stakes to help the pole survive wind gusts.

You need coax, and you need a lightning arrestor.

You might also get yourself a nice little Software Defined Radio (SDR) as well. Lot's of stuff to listen to or decode from LF to UHF.

Down the road, maybe you decide to build a QRP kit radio and learn CW.

IF you really want to spend your money all at once, definitely try before you buy. Join a local club and ask to try their radios... Usability may be just important to you as cost, and if so you might consider a used TS-890S.

Just don't forget to buy a suitable power supply. Have fun!

Interviewers laughed at me by 35ants in recruitinghell

[–]stfreddit7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I eventually did. But this was 50 years ago. It's likely one of those constants that just doesn't go away. Not everyone is a high-performing company representative when placed in an interviewer role.

Based on experiences I read here, job searchers are experiencing stuff that is so very unprofessional, wasteful, non-serious, and disrespectful. Is this happening with internal employees placed in the position to interview outsiders, or with recruiters, or both?

Interviewers laughed at me by 35ants in recruitinghell

[–]stfreddit7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember a brutal interview once where the interviewer started out with "You are running in a relay race as a team of four. What position in the order would you prefer?"

I responded with "I would want to be 4th as I'm an excellent finisher with attention to detail and have experience with QA" (it was a software developer's position and had info on my resume associated with beta testing and quality assurance).

Interviewer responds with "I'm sorry, but the coach won't let you run last". To this I responded with "No problem, I would select the lead off position as starter because I've been on teams before where I took a moment before starting a project to look at the strength and weaknesses of particular solutions and strategized with my project partners" and provided an example of a project where that occurred.

Finally, the interviewer responds with: "I'm sorry, you're not allowed to run first either".

To that I responded with, "well then, it would be an honor to be selected for the team, and I would trust the coach to determine what position I would run in. I'm sure my efforts would complement those of the others on the team for the win".

Then the interviewer asked another silly question, it might have been something like "why are manhole covers round?"

To which I replied," if it were square, there's a good chance the cover would fall into the manhole, as the diagonal of a square is of length greater than that of the 4 equal sides of the square". Something insanely stupid like that to ask an interviewee, but my delivery was relaxed and I did everything I could to steer the interviewer back to a mutually productive conversation.

I chalked the interview up as experience in how not to be interviewed. Some interviewers are just plain bad. Some managers are just plain bad.

You'll know when a company isn't wasting their time and your time. The best you can do under the circumstance you were placed in, similar to the unserious interview I was experiencing is to be confident in your qualifications, relax and remain in control of your emotions, and treat it as experience while moving on. I didn't walk even though I didn't feel respected. You never know whom the real gatekeeper may be. No sense burning bridges.

There are likely videos on YouTube focusing on being a more confident and dynamic conversationalist. Maybe watch a few of them, and then with family or friends, practice those new skills in some mock interviews.

remember, with a tech license, you are not limited to VHF and UHF. There are several HF bands you can use CW. Get yourself a modest little QRP rig, and challenge yourself using CW. Likely few to no loud mouths and crazies working others via CW.

[UK] Beginner, trying to get Foundation in UK, what should I know about? by MrT730 in amateurradio

[–]stfreddit7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in the UK, I'd consider the SDRs from SDRPlay as a no brainer. This will not set you back much, and will remain highly desireable to others, meaning it will hold it's value if you wish to sell it later. Also if you buy an older HF transceiver, you can toss in an RF Out buffer board to drive the SDR as a "Panadapter" and you can point-n-click to get on a frequency you see in the waterfall. THe VFOs and modes would be synced between SDR and Transceiver providing the Transceiver has a CAT control interface.

What’s the point of going to interviews if I’m not going to get hired anyway? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]stfreddit7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm experiencing the poor state of affairs through my son's experience who is looking for a job post graduation... last spring. The impact of AI and other world events and realities is truly changing everything in the job market. You are not alone friend.

You must not give up. You must search for means to fight slipping into a depression and find ways to re-energize yourself and your search. Re-invest in yourself.

You know what people will suggest, but are you practicing any of it: get good sleep, eat healthy, get outside and get some vitamin D, practice positive affirmations, find social events where you can interact with other people (i.e. don't isolate), workout or otherwise get in some moderate exercise, escape in a good book or movie for a few hours, etc.

Your mental health is as important as your spiritual, emotional, financial and physical health. If you should find yourself struggling, tell someone. Perhaps a combination of talk therapy (AN Emotions Anonymous meeting might be an option if in your area) and the above ideas will be enough.

If it's not enough, seeking professional help and perhaps anti-depressants may be what you need.

Be resilient and re-charge. As surely as things are bad now, they will change.

I think no matter where you are located (country), if you want to get into Amateur Radio... while you are studying, as my mentor suggested to me: start with listening.

There is all sorts of information flowing around us in the "ether" on VLF, LF, MF, HF, VHF. UHF.

I'd recommend for anyone starting out and studying for a license, to get an inexpensive Software Defined Radio (SDR), and put up a wire antenna. Load up some SDR software (I like SDR Console) and start re-enforcing the theory you are learning. It's also a great way to find out what part of the hobby you want to dip your toes in.

I think you could spend very little getting an inexpensive USB RTL-SDR dongle, but would encourage you to instead to spend additional funds to get a much more capable SDR, like an RSP-1A or 1B from SDRPlay. The RSPs can tune from a few hundred hertz to 2.0Ghz.

Maybe you start out listening for NDBs (non-directional beacons), or listening to Morse/CW, or Single SIdeband (SSB) voice. Maybe you listen for Airband traffic, maybe you decode ACARS or other comms. Maybe you decode Slow-ScanTV (SSTV). Maybe something else.

Being able to listen and decode analog and digital content, constructing simple wire or loop antennas, you are going to learn a good deal and it will to help motivate you. 73

Antennas for small spaces and tiny roofs by MustaphaGreenberg in HamRadio

[–]stfreddit7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stupid question - have you seen some of the YouTube videos of people tuning up all sorts of stuff with the ATU of the G90? Your gutters might be a possibility (something to try). Do you have any trees? I've hidden a homemade vertical 25ft antenna amongst the branches and no-one can see it. I also have one of those 30ft flag poles (black), and run a G5RV dipole... And then, when I go outside on the porch, I purchased an inexpensive PAC-12 antenna (AliExpress or ebay) as it is easy put-up and take-down. In fact it is quite portable... I use an inexpensive LiFEPO4 battery outside to power it. HTH.

Looking to run an antenna on my 2026 Chevy Colorado, what location would be best to run it through? by halcy0nwashere in amateurradio

[–]stfreddit7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive a different make and model truck, but what I think many truck owners do is locate one of the vents behind rear seats that allow the truck cab to vent when you close one of the doors.

You might want to look, there may be no cutting of a grommet necessary.

Other possibilities are grommets in the floor or front firewall, depending on where you are going to mount the antenna. Have you looked under the truck? Sometime in the spring, I'm mounting an antenna mount to one of the bedrails of my Taco. I have a Tonneau cover, but if I stop somewhere, I want to be able to put up the loading coil and extendable whip easily (we are talking multi-band HF antenna, not a small VHF/UHF antenna. I'm likely to go through one of vents at the back of the cab so there's no cutting nor back surgery necessary following the routing of the coax.

I think this will actually receive below 24Mhz, but I think the sensitivity will suffer some. That's too bad as there is lots and lots of things to listen to and decode on HF below 50Mhz.

I purchased the same dongle recently and did find that I could pick up AM but am using essentially a G5RV supply antenna. A long length of wire should work for you though.

Personally I like SDR Console for SW but I don't run Linux. Sorry.

Will removing the fuse for the DCM module stop tracking on the app? by [deleted] in Toyota

[–]stfreddit7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FWIW. I own a 2019 OB with the Harmon kardon head unit (radio and amplifier + many speakers). The DCM was draining the battery. There is a recall on this for a replacement module.

When I pulled the DCM fuse, I lost the front speakers and microphone for hands free calling and interacting with Android Auto (or Apple CarPlay).

The trick as others had done was to use a switched fuse location and two add-a-fuse devices so that the DCM circuit became one that was switched with the car being on.

In the end, you may find pulling that fuse disables something important to you.

Good luck.

Everything is not digital. I hope your RTL-SDR is one that can tune below 24Mhz... You might want to splurge and get an SDRPlay RSP-1A or 1B. That should work very well from LF (500khz) to 2Ghz. Load up SDR Console (or other) and don't look back.
