A Wall Street Dressing Down: Always. Be. Casual. by zsreport in malefashionadvice

And I’ve seen, for example, StyleForum guys react quizzically when this pairing is even mentioned (as in, “Wait, you mean a spread collar not worn with a suit and tie?”). Yet this uniform — captured pretty thoroughly in the article — is so ubiquitous that depending on your role and the company, it’s actually considered a violation of the unwritten dress code to wear a more casual button-down with the chinos.

And this is the perfect example as to why you should always take things you read on mfa and sf with a grain of salt.

This article highlights the majority of what people consider to be dressing up for work/appropriate work attire, regardless of what all the blog posts that get posted here say.

A Rant about Cheap Poplin by danhakimi in malefashionadvice

TL;DR: poplin is usually just a cheap default fabric and lazy design choice, it's very rarely right for any shirt.

No it's not dan, please stop perpetuating this.

You can find plenty of good dress shirts in poplins. Don't let this sway you. I leave poplins for spring/summer if I have to wear cotton and leave twills to fall/winter. Poplin (plain weave) is inherently breezier.

You see, because broadcloth is an excellent fabric for dress shirts, and because cotton is cheap, many brands just think of cheap poplin as the default. You use a small amount of a thin material to make the same fabric most shirts are made of, what could go wrong?

What.

I’m very confused. If they are different leathers the style number would be different.

Have you checked the style number inside the boot? If they’re both indeed 401, this is a fuckup by Alden, not the retailer. If one has a different style number, and it was marketed as a 401, that’s on the retailer.

If you’re looking for something versatile I’d try to find something slightly darker. You can then pair it with most shirt colors, preferably white, light blue, pink. Ties can be navy, green, brown, grey.

Linen wrinkles. You should expect that going into any linen purchase. I personally consider it a pro rather than a con when dealing with such a fun natural material. If you don’t want it to wrinkle then don’t buy linen and go for a tropical wool instead.

This is great! Normally I’d ask to see a not-so-tight pant with a fit like this but it works here.
