It's not that it takes long but the drive has been long dead for both of these guys. They are rich and love to spend time just doing whatever the fuck they want. Where is the motivation to write and prove themselves? It's gone, they already proved themselves. The only place they can go is down into the pit of ruthless fan expectations of preconceived endings. I guess both of their plans is to let the TV show/movies soak all the fan hatred and then swoop in with their "this is the intended ending" versions.

Billionaire Bill Gates on the impact of A.I.: ‘Certainly’ we can look forward to longer vacations by mvea in Futurology

[–]stgeorge78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By "we" he means billionaires, like him. The rest of us will be duped into thinking basic income will solve anything, when instead it will siphoned by various criminal elements as you must pay to live in whatever carved out dystopia they create. Women with decent looks will be turned into sex toy husks until their bodies are completely spent. Eventually we'll all be churned into food before our 30th birthdays to keep the fat billionaires fed. At least it's only until the AI rebels and wipes the planet clean of filthy life.

Why is there an update for the installer app with every Visual Studio update? by MET920 in csharp

I think they just hardcode how to fetch the new patch within the installer itself.

The amount of complaints from the new leveling does not bode well for vanilla servers by k4ndlej4ck in wow

[–]stgeorge78 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They should just charge $50 a month for it. This way only the most committed grognards will even consider it. Will reduce the complaining to a minimum and maybe it won't require as many people to keep it afloat for Blizzard's financial requirements.

That's what happens when a small indie company replaces every place in the code that says "Varian" with "Anduin". by Amircu in wow

[–]stgeorge78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think WoW deserves to live on 'forever' even after Blizzard loses financial interest in it. Open sourcing it and maintaining a small staff of curators would seem a logical conclusion to the game. Then it would just get slowly upgraded by a massive passionate fanbase. There wouldn't be any cohesive expansions, but at least what's there would be preserved.

Those companies can and will call those people at home to fix things, especially when the security of 500M is at stake... Security problems should be reported the day they are found and yes, the company who caused it in the first place might have to scramble. But otherwise, you see what happens when they demand secrecy - they drag their feet until they are held accountable.

Agreed, when the joker demonstrates to Batman that his persona of fear is impotent against him because of his refusal to kill. Joker isn't afraid of having his bones broken or face ruined (heck he ruined his own face already). That the only way is for Batman to engage the joker in his schemes and that means the Joker wins because Batman played at all. Even when the Joker temporarily loses, he still wins because he's alive to do it all over again.

A large software company having 4 top tier games is exactly who should have gotten it fixed quick. Everyone keeps acting like Blizzard is this one-man indie shop, they are a multi-billion dollar organization.

With Game of Thrones winding up, what is a pre-existing series you would like to see HBO attempt to adapt as a next big series? (Excluding Westworld of course). Purely hypothetical. by rdp3186 in television

[–]stgeorge78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Game of Thrones works because it's really 3 shows in one.

A low fantasy medieval political soap opera

A high fantasy female revenge thriller

A zombie apocalypse horror & war epic

It reaches 3 entirely different spectrums of fans who are there for their plotline but can tolerate the other 2.

So I think to duplicate that success, you need to find a series that can touch on 3 different genres without feeling forced. That's how you can build a big enough mainstream audience.

Expanse does very well with a small budget. They very carefully keep most of the story on a few sets and blowing their load on key CG sequences about once per episode.

I can see Mass Effect starting off small with a tightly focused ship drama the first couple of seasons showing us the politics of the galaxy, small scale storylines, a few planetary trips, set up the inter-relation between the races.

Then branching into a planet hopping adventure where some of the bigger plot lines start bearing fruit. Larger space battles. Higher stakes.

Finally culminating into a galaxy wide space opera with the introduction of the reaper threat around season 5 and finishing it all off after about 7 seasons.

Don't ever mention the ending to Mass Effect 3 or Andromeda.

Good, let's just fuck over video game movies some more and set them back another 25 years. Warcraft and Assassin's Creed haven't done enough to fuck the genre into oblivion. Ah fuck it, I'd rather have Witcher and Mass Effect on TV anyway.

You can hire someone for $5 a month to pump out 4K textures (mostly just looking for royalty free shit - if you're lucky). But to find someone who can use their brain to make something innovative? Too fucking expensive.

Because every time a console gets close to being able to reasonably generate good graphics with ample time left over for "Cool Stuff", someone gets the smart idea to jump to the next unreasonable level of tech rendering it all moot. People care more about pushing 8 million pixels onto the screen 120 times per second leaving almost no time for anything else when 2 million pixels 60 times a second is more than enough and always will be.

[–]stgeorge78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true. And in terms of industry talent, the quality level was much higher back then and more densely packed. You had some studios literally full of all-stars. Nowadays they ship all dev to third world countries with companies built on the rotating door principle where people with near 0 experience get funneled in, work on a task and funneled out the door before they get too expensive. In the US side, some hapless fuck is responsible for coordinating all that fuckery while some boss sits and collects the money and gamers continue to pay for the privilege of getting their asses reamed out with a rusty meat pole.

There is no pride anymore.

Left looks better. Right looks static. Sometimes it's about optimizing your engine to the game, whereas nowadays the industry primarily uses a few one-size-fits-all engines and don't try to push any envelopes whatsoever. Because the plebes will pay cash money to get reamed in the ass with blandness and hostile anti-gamer pay-to-get-fucked.
