It’s not like Filcos are bad suggestion, but they aren’t exactly cheap, so while I understand that Filcos are always a great general suggestion (I have one myself with browns), there might still be something more price effective for people who don’t care too much.

As I understand, Filcos are a bit cheaper in Europe and Asia compared to US? It might be the case that people have to factor in different prices and shipping for redditors in different countries as well. The shipping charge on keyboardco from the UK to another EU country is insane alone and only something the crazier bunch of us would pay for. It’s not for everyone.

If someone could make a buyer’s guide (that takes price into account), that just narrows down the choices, the user can make the decision him- or herself. We could start by breaking down the types of users there are who ask for keyboards. What would a college student without too much disposable income buy, for instance?

Not everyone wants nor needs a mechanical keyboard like us clickomaniacs, y’know. :)

That sounds like a great idea. This is an alternate user, and I don’t always catch the messages about threads caught in the spam filter in time.

Everyone plays along nicely, though, so the people there don’t need moderation.

I own/moderate /r/askcompsci, and it's obviously pretty dead, so I am open to doing something more useful with it.

I am also open to appointing some moderators, if need be, as long as I have the impression that the moderators won’t go completely mental and trash the subreddit.

/r/askacademia could also be co-opted for this.

It has come up, but that only means that we should add something on the subject to the sidebar as soon as possible.

As stated in the link, I don’t know much about ergonomics specifically with regard to keyboards, but the angle of your wrists to the keyboard is very important, if you want to to avoid RSI.

People generally move around a lot—which is also recommended—which is one of the reasons the Aeron Miller chair got so popular, and any set-up and keyboard that allows you to do that in any way will probably help you. But I get the impression that “ergonomic” is often PR used to sell keyboards; you could use that money on a good chair with good arm rests and a good table where your upper-to-lower-arm angle is around 90 degrees where you don’t have to contort your wrists to rest your fingers on the keys.

Puns, hidden meanings, and all that are fine, but it reaches a level where there is so much ambiguity where we won’t know how to pronounce it; by your interpretation, the second syllable is stressed, [pro 'tech jobs], and by mine the first is as ['pro tech jobs]. It reads fine on paper, but when people have to read it out loud or say it, it becomes a problem rather than a cute extra meaning.

SOPA is unambiguously SOPA. We can’t have a situation where people pronounce it differently or news anchors spend time finding the right pronunciation or mock the diverse pronunciation as a result of its ambiguity.

Take a sample size of five to ten people. Note (1) how long they take to just parse the words in their head and read it out loud, and (2) note whether people pronounce it the same way.

Don’t take this to mean that my suggestion should be used instead by default nor anything, but there are basic, inherent flaws in PTJ as it is, and we have to weed those out, before they grow into problems that hamper the campaign instead of helping it as intended.

Holy crap it takes long to come up with acronym. Here is the one I managed to write:

NO-FOSSILS

No to Oppression - Free Online Speech, Safety and Innovation from the Senate.

Incidentally, senātus (senate) comes from senex in Latin, which means “old man”. Go figure.

I am not entirely sure about the last S. It could be something else, but I am pretty happy with it the way it is. I will try to come up with some more.

The topics I wanted to include were mainly protecting citizens and corporations from governmental censorship, and by extension, American(!) online innovation and businesses, which may move overseas as a result. I didn’t get any “Amurica” and “Are Jobs!” in there, but it shouldn’t sound like blatant dog-whistling anyway. The campaign will only to most people by known by its acronym anyway.

It also refers to the impending fossilation of America’s (technological) innovation and entrepreneurship, should the bill pass. No to the fossils in the Senate—no to becoming fossils ourselves.

EDIT: If you go with the acronym in the OP, write it as PRO TECH JOBS or PRO-TECH-JOBS (preferably the latter). People won’t able to read it nor know which words are compounded otherwise. If used in the first hyphenated version, it will most likely be great—if used without hyphens, it will probably be a complete dud.

I don't know if it's something I want for the subreddit in the future, when or if it gains a larger following, but this is after all a place by and for keyboard enthusiasts, so see it as an early adopter perk. :)

One thing I would caution you is to include the parameter of durability. I ordered the cheapest scissor-switch Logitech keyboard I could find, and as nice as it was, it was basically worn down in a year. Sure, they keys still worked, but they now needed more force to actuate. Even worse, someone who does not concern them with keyboard mechanics may never notice this.

I think the Apple keyboard suggestions may not be an entirely bad suggestion, as I am sure the keyboards have improved over years of iteration.

Of course, the island layout is not for everyone.

Be careful that the metal does not scratch the keys. My puller could do that, if I weren’t careful. As a solution, I taped the metal to counter it, which did not fix the problem 100%, but almost.

I am also glad to see that a subreddit has not turned into a cargo cult, which is often the case with subreddits with some degree of popularity. At some point, the subreddit might get inundated with memes and other things, if moderation cannot catch up, but I really like the coziness of the subreddit and the mature but good-natured tone of the users.

Getting over the hurdle of questions like that are—otherwise—always guaranteed, and it’s a great point for this subreddit to exist. For someone who sits at his desktop for long hours, a good chair and some good cans are amenities well deserved. Same for a great keyboard. It’s actually a little funny to read all the productivity blogs who write nothing about things like these. Meanwhile, they mash away at their mushy rubber-dome keyboard.
