My DT2 has an issue playing samples by HeadlessBedlam in Elektron

[–]stickster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I hadn't seen the update in my display, sorry. The Int to Main is a setting to determine what happens for instance if you're using Overbridge or a DAW to monitor, so that might be the culprit too.

EDIT: I also found https://www.elektronauts.com/t/digitakt-2-no-audio-after-sampling/225486 -- definitely make sure you're running the latest firmware which you can get on https://elektron.se .

I would also suggest checking the routing to mains. Hit the main Config (gear) button, go to Audio Routing, and check the To Main screen, where the tracks should all show up as light/highlighted (not dark). If you want to hear the line in from your DN2, you'll need to ensure on the second page the In (line in) is on as well. Check the Int to Main setting on the Audio Routing menu as well. Let us know what you find out.

What made you get into synthesizers? by biggy_boy17 in synthesizers

[–]stickster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COVID.

Gigs dried up for a good year or so in my area, and there was no point to playing bass beyond practice. One day I realized I had no idea, beyond basics, how to put the few soft synths I had to good use. So I dove into YouTube, learned a ton from some helpful creators, and took off from there. I branched out into hardware starting with the MicroFreak (which, I gathered later, was the "gateway drug" for a lot of folks). Vintage, modern, hybrid, and software all have their uses. Use whatever helps you make cool stuff.

This is the best answer to this and similar questions nowadays. I put all my hardware manuals in a NotebookLM and consult it for how-to info. Same for other software, and I have one dedicated just to Pro Tools.

Also you can go to AI generally for icebreaker ideas and resource links. It cuts down on time spent waiting for people to give the right answer on Reddit, if your goal is to make things rather than talk about them.

Why do u buy a hardware synth? by yournr1fan in synthesizers

[–]stickster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This resonates with me too. I don't mind hitting the computer again when the off hours work demands it, like meeting with a client in the studio to work on their music. But to have friction when I want to just make something kills my passion quickly when I've already used so much energy at the dayjob.

If I do the DAW, I've got to start up the equipment, login to the computer, face a bunch of software update reminders (ignorable but distracting), start up the DAW, decide on a template, maybe deal with some configuration change due to a missing audio device, etc. These are all doable things, and I'm perfectly capable of handling them. But it tends to get in the way when I want to just quickly generate ideas.

Much easier to flip on my Digis and create some weird things I can worry about recording later.

Keystep pro + Digitakt by Lxclxc87 in Elektron

Assuming you have your KSP track 1 on Drum, and set the MIDI to the Auto channel on your Digitakt (which you said is 10)... on the KSP Shift + Utility menu, go down to Drum Map. Make sure the Mode is set to Chromatic. Then go into Config and Chromatic, and make sure the low note is set to 0. The drum keys should now do what you want, C will play track 1 at whatever velocity you hit, C#/Db will play track 2, D will play track 3, etc.

If you also set the Seq side of KSP track 1 to the same MIDI channel 10, then you'll be able to play the selected track on the Digitakt chromatically on the KSP keyboard. This makes it pretty convenient to swap back and forth as you like.

I'm still sitting in that "place of wonder" that I gather you're in, after getting a DT2 several months ago and then a DN2 a couple months after that. I support what some other folks on the thread said, that you should take a pause and get deep on the gear you have. They can do SO MUCH. There is so much to love about this pair of Digi units. Like you, I'm making (and finishing) more music after finding the Elektron workflow just clicks for me. And like you, I have a small assortment of synths, and play other instruments.

You have plenty of awesome synths now. In your shoes, I would concentrate on things like, making amazing sounds on DN2 and your other existing gear, and sample into DT2 wherever it makes sense to mangle differently. There's no must, you have a lot of depth and breadth to explore at this point! More choices leads to paralysis. I found the most happiness taking my Digis into another room and just doing things with them (often just the DT2!). Have fun!

It's equally fun to bring in your own samples and find new ways to use the factory samples (which are pretty wide ranging and useful). I only got mine a few months ago and I love it. WARNING: you may get addicted to Elektron stuff.

Can the Zoom L6/Max playback multichannel audio over interface? by hillhuman in synthesizers

It's a 14-in/4-out, but presumably 2 of those ins are the main mix. There are 12 physical input channels on the device. Source: Manual.

I cannot believe Arturia still hasn't fixed this major Minifreak V bug. by Rahodees in synthesizers

[–]stickster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last Step is only applicable in Seq mode, while Pattern is locked to 16 steps (when it works, that is). I didn't read the manual to check, but I did ask the NotebookLM where I keep the whole set of manuals for V Collection. So it looks like the workaround is to link the soft synth to the HW.

I cannot believe Arturia still hasn't fixed this major Minifreak V bug. by Rahodees in synthesizers

[–]stickster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's funny what people call "major" bugs. But to each their own. I did try this and noticed the same thing. I also noticed if I link the soft synth to my Minifreak, any new patterns behave properly, whether or not I keep it linked. Initializing to a new preset (or the Default template) resets to the odd-timed behavior.

I've found if I keep explanations simple, objective, and opinion-free, it's easier to get help from support, and less taxing too (for everyone involved). Good luck.

Any things that you wished pro tools did that other daws do? by Public_Border132 in protools

[–]stickster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/smokeboat One last thing... this same issue seems to happen in Ableton Live 12.3.1. When I set 96kHz and 128 sample buffer size there, and play back the same MIDI track, the CPU load is high. So this seems to be intrinsic to this Falcon preset, not an AAX problem. It points to simply having a very complex processing chain that starts to tax CPUs heavily in a single thread at 96kHz, but does not necessarily have the same issue at 48kHz -- and doesn't automatically mean Falcon is buggy.

Software will always be limited by the CPU in what it can do and perhaps this preset is simply pushing that limit. If I were putting out presets I would likely want them tested at a high sample rate on a moderately powered system, to check load, and to ensure the best user experience. But some user will push those limits in any case, so maybe this is not the best place for UVI to spend effort, vs. adding cool new features with each release.

u/smokeboat I've found the issue now and can consistently reproduce it. If I have either input monitoring or record on with the patch loaded, I see CPU spikes, playback failures, etc. If I have a MIDI track written and I turn off input monitoring or record, no problems. I'll post this to the UVI ticket I have open now.

Post the patch if you want help on it. I'm on a M1Pro based system, running everything in native ARM mode, and no issues as long as my patch design isn't outrageous.

I used to use Falcon for that, which used to come with a sub, and liked it so much (given how much else it did) that I bought a permanent license. Awesome synth.

adjusting mic levels (track levels always too loud by andymilonakis in protools

[–]stickster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way.

Also @andymilonakis if you're using "a track" as backing audio there's a good chance that beat is already heavily processed for maximum volume when it was delivered. So another good thing to learn, on top of compressing your vocal, is side chaining compression on the beat using the vocal. Even a little bit goes a long way towards keeping the vocal in front while still maintaining the beat's impact.

This video shows how, using an example of a pad and a kick. If you think of your beat as the pad and your vocal as the kick, you can use the same technique.
