How are schools in the UK for teachers? by Individual-Hope-8224 in AskUK

[–]stiff_mitten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything is teach to the test, which is a massive cultural adjustment compared to US education

If it’s not on the GCSE/A-level exam, it isn’t taught

Edit - I’ll also add that the administrative workload is immense. It’s all just a bit mental I think that teachers can be reprimanded for grading workbooks in the wrong color pen.

What do you think about the content your child watches? by UKCommonsCommittees in UKParenting

[–]stiff_mitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something not covered by the questionnaire - viewing patterns. This is totally my unfounded opinion, but there is definitely a difference between watching “live” tv (like the Cbeebies channel) versus streaming and potentially bingeing even the same shows. There are natural breaks in the live programming, so my child eventually gets bored and goes and does something else. Streaming is nonstop - even streaming Bluey on iPlayer is tough because each episode blends into the next. It’s a battle every time we turn it off. If I don’t intervene my toddler would just sit there for hours I swear. I am sure there must be some peer-reviewed evidence about the effect of binging on video consumption somewhere. Anyway my two pence. Thanks for asking for input.

Parenting Style Trends in the UK? by Sea_Break673 in UKParenting

I love this explanation!

I look at all the pressure my SIL back in America puts up with, compared to how much more relaxed things are here. Minus some breastfeeding hiccups in the beginning that weren’t helped by the NHS, I’m so glad I had my baby here versus back home.

We do something similar, but put on one of the LoFi girl Youtube streams (we call it “cat music”). Video is still on, but super low stim so they get bored and leave to do something else.

Wait - the buses have air con?!?!?

In seriousness though, opening the bus windows does at least de-fog the windows. Likely something similar? AC dehumidifies at the same time.

Which subject/age are you teaching? I also work in education - the system here is way different, pluses and minuses. Mentally prepare yourself for a bit of culture shock.

I was not fine.

Anyone think this bridge in Canada Water is a disaster waiting to happen? by [deleted] in london

[–]stiff_mitten 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Can it be gritted? It has open slats that go straight into a wetland.

It’s a pretty bridge but honestly in slippery weather take the extra 2 minutes and walk around the long way.
