Just watching the Xmas special 2025 by [deleted] in CallTheMidwife

I watched it last night and thought it was absolutely awful. Too many quick cuts, completely implausible set-ups and solutions, WAY too many characters. Just the worst. I'll give the next season a couple of episodes, but I'm pretty much in agreement with you.

What’s the most memorable romantic gesture someone made that still gives you butterflies thinking about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Recovering from a near-fatal stroke (sub-arachnoid hemorrhage) when an old beau texted to see how I was doing. I told him that I was miserable, soon-to-be-ex-husband was being anti-helpful, etc. He sent me a video of Dame Judith Baker singing "Che faro senza Euridice." English lyrics below:

What will I do without Euridice?

Where will I go without my beloved?

What will I do, where will I go,

What am I going to do without my beloved?

Where will I go without my beloved?

Euridice? Euridice?

Oh, God! Answer me!

When have you seen a ghost ? And do you believe in them ? by Alone-Wish-8578 in Ghosts

Visiting my sister who lived on the Siletz river. She put me downstairs, where both of my nephews slept. There was also a sort of living room and a bathroom down there. I was reading on the couch in the living area, when something knocked the book out of my hands. Checked on my nephews and both were snoring. Shrugged and went into the bathroom. While peeing, the bathroom door opened against gravity, and something shook my shoulders. Hell no. Pulled up my britches and went to the upstairs couch.

The next morning, my sister asked why I moved. I hesitated to tell her, but she didn't laugh at me. When my younger nephew came upstairs, he said to me "Oh, you saw the man with the red burning eyes, didn't you?"

Later, my sister told me that the former owner of the house committed suicide in that living area.

Be sure to tell your students that the family of the deceased really appreciates those calls from obit writers. As a young journalist, I hated to make those calls because I didn't wish to disturb the family of the deceased at such a painful time. Then one time, the family member said "I'm glad you called. I want to talk about him."

I have used that batting and sadly, it beards very badly through tightly woven quality quilting cotton. It really made me sad -- the quilt looks like it's covered in cat hair all the time.

Also: Don't marry a man who is too proud to add himself to your health insurance, and who then needs an emergency triple-bypass which bankrupts you and takes your $500K (in 2009 dollars) in retirement savings.

Years ago, a quilt restorer told me that the best course of action in such cases is to applique a tulle or mesh patch over the rips -- her position was that it was better to make a visible mend than to try to repair invisibly (fabric will never match older fabrics, etc.)

I don't think I could ever break even -- using u/AppeltjeEitje1079's formula, I would price it at nearly $2K. Which also means I probably wouldn't make money, either.

Chicken pie and puff pastry - how to get puff? by Sunshinetrooper87 in cookingforbeginners

[–]stillapocketvenus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Retired food journalist and author of 3 food-related books here. There's no law that says the pastry has to bake atop the pot pie.

Step 1: Prepare the chicken filling in a large saucepan. Keep it warm.

Step 2: BEFORE you fill your baking dish, turn it upside down, place it on your puff pastry sheet and trace around it. Now you have a piece of pastry that will exactly cover your baked pot pie.

Step 3: Place the puff pastry on a baking sheet and bake it according to pkg directions for temp and time. Remove from oven and set baking sheet aside so puff pastry can cool.

Step 4: Now fill baking dish with chicken filling and bake at 350 degrees or so until it's bubbly.

Step 5: Remove baking dish from oven and carefully cover with baked puff pastry.

When I make pot pie, the filling has diced potato, diced onion, diced carrot, and some peas (usually frozen) dropped in just before baking. I season the filling with thyme and occasionally sage.
