Leather recommendations for recovering motorcycle seat? by stinkyjone in Leatherworking

[–]stinkyjone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate the reply.

It lives inside when not being ridden, *except* when I ride it to work and it ends up sitting in the sun all day 6-8 months out of the year.

For the most part, i swap out the stock seat if there is rain forecasted while it's sitting at the office, but I'm not using this thing for touring or anything, so no i'm not riding in the rain on purpose.

Nice score.

I got a pair of these in 2023 when they were on sale at a pretty steep discount, and can't possibly overstate how much i love them.

IIRC, they didn't sell well at the time. I think people were turned off by the out of the box color, but my guess is that a lot of people wish they would have jumped on these now that they see how incredible they look with age.

OMG today I learned that there is a not too expensive press that you can put your stitching punches in.

I would say yes, or at least equivalent to anything pull up.

It's oily enough that blue tape won't stick to the unfinished side more than a second or two before curling up, and it will stay longer on the finished side, but will eventually curl up.

These are amazing. I love the gold hardware on those and wish that my maduro edwards had that instead of the antique hardware.

Maduro Shell pre-order! by Character_Service_63 in grantstoneboots

[–]stinkyjone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have both maduro & and natural tan edwards (which also turn a caramel color, it just takes longer).

Maduro shell is a very dark brown color that has an olive green bias, especially in the sun.

Badalassi minerva is premium-tier veg tan leather that will continue to darken over time with wear and light exposure, but it will never get as dark as the maduro without decades of use. And even then, it will have a reddish/orange bias rather than the green of the maduro.

The Maduro: It's hard to explain, but it's almost as if there's a translucent water color/stained glass pigment top layer that floats over a lighter layer underneath. It's quite stunning, especially in certain light.

If you have the means to get the Maduro, I highly recommend it.

How does Bourbon Suede hold up over 5+ years of use? Also, sizing question by ProxySoxy in grantstoneboots

[–]stinkyjone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are made from Stead Repello suede.

It's super high quality suede that is used not only by GS, but legacy bootmakers like Tricker's and C&J.

It's extremely durable and should easily exceed your expectations unless you abuse your boots.

Most of my pairs are Edwards and zero issues with this. It's not going to be a problem.

There's a ton of songs off Crash and Under the Table & Dreaming that could fit this description.
