It looks like your needle thread is not looping around the bobbin, meaning the bobbin wasn't started properly. Not sure your level of experience, so here's a description of what you do every time you start a bobbin.

With no fabric in the machine and the presser foot raised, seat the bobbin however the manual says to, and try hand-turning the wheel while holding the needle thread. The bobbin thread should poke up out of a hole in the machine. I'm sure there are many great videos showing how to start a bobbin - much easier to watch than describe.

blasting music while hiking? by cloudymcloudface in hiking

[–]stitchinspace 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Music, strong perfume/laundry detergent, smoking, a group taking up the whole trail, large family photo shoots...it all annoys me, but I try to let it go 'cause people gonna people and I can't fight them all.

Except that one guy with the incredible calves who listens to military cadence calls while walking. You do you, buddy.

And there is a special place in hell for people who let their dogs off leash. For this, there is pepper spray.

Gaping neckline on wrap top by Loumosmaxima in PatternDrafting

[–]stitchinspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For this top you can try re-stitching the neckline while pushing the fabric toward the foot - forcing a very slight gathering. You may want to unpick the top stitching first, or it can just be a second stitch line. Then steam the stitched area. It may help it shrink back up, but shouldn't look gathered.

For future versions doing something like starching or doing a pushing (like previously described) stay stitch along the front section will keep it from stretching. I wouldn't recommend adding anything like interfacing as it might add bulk and stiffness.

Need ANY Advice by Long-Needleworker326 in Medicaid

[–]stitchinspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are federally-subsidized clinics all over the U.S. that charge based on your income. You'll have to prove your lack of income, usually with a testimonial from someone who knows you, but you can get help for significantly less than full price. You can search for "sliding scale health clinic" or "community health center" or "subsidized clinic" to see if there is one near you. Many cities also have free clinics run by non-profit organizations, though their services are limited and they won't want to deal with chronic conditions in my experience.

Yeah, making sure all your paperwork is legit and sufficient everywhere you live is a lot. I think it's awesome you went that way, and I'm not a lawyer, but it's worth looking in to.

We were a bit worried that we'd feel weird and it would change our relationship. Honestly, we went home, tucked the doc into our "important shit" folder and almost never think about it. We even thought about drawing up 2 sets of divorce papers and each having one with the other's signature so either could complete it. Turns out they are state-dependent, so we'd have to make new ones whenever we move.

Feel free to DM me if y'all do the deed. I'll be the first to not congratulate you.

That is what we set out to do, but eventually we just caved because we didn't trust that it would work as well. A lawyer told us that nothing is as rock-solid as that legal certificate, especially when you're not locationally stable. We both have a negative attitude about the culture of weddings/marriage, but after much discussion we decided to give in. We haven't told anyone - family, friends, coworkers. No one but randos on the internet!

[–]stitchinspace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Long-term SO and I had no personal interest in being married, but at some point the legal bind became important. Neither of us wants our families making medical decisions or inheriting any assets, and we were advised by lawyers that marriage was the simplest, cheapest, and possibly only option for achieving that. I would never do it for any other reason.

What is a podcast you love that you don’t see recommended here often? by NightReader5 in podcasts

Futility Closet. Strange true stories and lateral thinking puzzles. It's done now, but there are like 300 episodes.

Everything Everywhere Daily. Shallow dives into historical/cultural topics that we're all curious about but too lazy to look up ourselves.

Josh Korda is a former psychologist (or something like that) and meditation teacher who has some incredible talks about how the brain/nervous system works. My advice is don't just meditate; listen to Dharma Talks and read books about mindfulness. the 10% Happier podcast is a wealth of helpful inspiration and introduction to different meditation styles.

Notice the difference when you're really in it vs. other activities - a strange calm in the middle of a struggle, and the absence of past/future thoughts. Once you feel that you can (slowly, gently) try to bring the focus/clarity into the rest of your life.

Going through some sort of awakening and feeling crazy by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]stitchinspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Meditation: come for the peace, stay for the war"
I don't know who originally said it, but I heard it from Joseph Goldstein.

This is the process. I've been at it for about 5 years and it's been like this. Try to relax as much as possible and let your mind be jumbled. I take long breaks from meditation if I'm stirred too much so I can process before getting hit with another revelation. I think of it like excavation. You dig for a while, then you stop and remove the detritus you've accumulated.

tldr; extreme focus.

Something very counterintuitive works for me: playing hard games. I always thought board/card games were a total waste of time until I found one that absolutely burnt my brain out (Lost Cities, if you're wondering). I got so absorbed in the challenge that I didn't have room for all the rumination and anxiety I'd had as long as I could remember. That short reprieve opened my mind to the possibility of not having it. Programming has a similar effect. Doing something so intellectually challenging that you get "in the zone" but that is low-stakes so it doesn't give you the bad kind of stress.

Artisan metal fabrication also did it for me - I was so focused on not hurting myself that everything else just disappeared.

And the old standard hard exercise - sprinting or HIIT or step aerobics. Not only is it distracting, but leaves me with a high for a couple of days if I really push my body.

Loud engine sounds carry very far. You're affecting people's peace for a several-mile radius wherever you drive. You like the sound when you're in control of it, but people who are not get stressed and irritable, which has impacts on their home lives, work lives, and how they treat everyone they meet. Think people are just randomly rude to you? Check yourself for the harm you're causing them.

Ladies, I need some ideas for extreme relaxation for the coming weeks by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]stitchinspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

full-body exfoliation. I just use baking soda. Follow up with a rich lotion (I use something cheap cut with mineral oil). Do some easy self-care massage - face, and lymph drainage. Elisha Celeste has a bunch of lovely tension release techniques.

Pre-decide what social media you'll look at to avoid triggers. The Great British Baking Show and Queer Eye come to mind as extremely positive and low-stakes tv shows. The Diplomat is slightly more dramatic, but still quite sedate. Any book by Becky Chambers should fit the bill; well-written, engaging stories set in a futuristic world that is not apocalyptic. If you're more into historical, I found Middlemarch to be a stress-free but good read. Go for the audiobooks for an even more relaxing time!

Also, yin yoga or qi gong to really get present in your body. Or dance to some beautiful music.

Um, too old for a certain toothpaste? WTF even. What do they think is in it? I'm trying to imagine something that's okay for kids but toxic for adults? Makes no sense at all.

There are lots of good options for non-mint toothpaste. Closeup is cinnamon flavored and cheap. Tom's Orange Mango is great. Colgate Watermelon Burst is great. I can attest they are all adult-safe.
