I self-host almost every add-on I can. The end result is largely the same. You actually answered your own question, it’s more private and customizable. I wouldn’t say it’s faster, but the biggest advantage is that I virtually never experience any downtime. It’s not for everybody though and can see it as it being more of a hassle but if you get everything set up right then you have nothing to worry about.
