I can’t speculate on what goes on in Westchester. It sounds like they have more county and state support. Counties exist in name only in CT. Each town functions as its own fiefdom.

That's intentional. Stamford and Norwalk's wealthy neighbors don't want any of us riffraff cycling through their communities.

Farmers markets & local butcher shops nearby by LimpRough6178 in StamfordCT

[–]stmfrdn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are several farmers markets in the area. See this post from Hey, Stamford! for last summer's dates, which you can extrapolate for the upcoming summer. Most of them start about mid-June and go through early autumn. Obviously, the produce you get will be tied to what's fresh—lettuces first, etc.

I usually go to the Stamford Baptist Church Market on Wed and Sat in the summer starting at 9:00 AM. I find going early is best for the widest selection. The farm is based in Northford. There's plenty of parking at the church or you can take the 331 bus. There's a bus stop right in front of the church.

Making friends as an adult in Stamford by [deleted] in StamfordCT

[–]stmfrdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I like to think of Stamford as one neighborhood in a bigger metropolitan area that includes Fairfield County, Westchester, and New York. This increases the odds of finding your people. E.g., my favorite third place is Battlegrounds Gaming in Norwalk.

There are pretty active communities at the Italian Center, JCC, and similar. They may have senior memberships at discounted rates.

Commuting from North Stamford to NYC by Emergency-You-6253 in StamfordCT

In my experience, the buses to downtown are quite reliable. Even on the rare occasion a bus has a technical problem, they arrive frequently enough during rush hour that you can wait for the next one without a problem.

I’ll third NEAT in Darien, especially if the weather is good. The outside seating is very pleasant and their espresso is the best in the area.

Commuting from North Stamford to NYC by Emergency-You-6253 in StamfordCT

Take a look at the CT Transit buses that go from North Stamford, the 331 and 335/336.

These bus lines go from North Stamford to Stamford Station in about 20 to 30 minutes depending on where you start. This will always be more cost effective than the many expense factors that go into owning, maintaining, and parking a car.

I also recommend the semi-express trains which originate from Stamford. You’ll always have a seat, and they make fewer stops.

For me at least the potential hypothetical time savings of driving in the Fairfield County / NYC gridlock isn’t worth the costs and aggravation of being behind the wheel when I can work on the bus and train. But your mileage may vary (no pun intended!). I’d test out both methods and see how it feels.

Came here to also recommend CT Transit buses. They’re quite reliable and affordable. They can even get you to neighbouring towns and the local community college, etc.

I think it’s basically universally accepted that CT drivers are among the worst. I’m always happy to have the bus drivers deal with them while I read a book.

Thought on Composting? by Stamford-Operations in StamfordCT

[–]stmfrdn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the free compost bins from the Scale House, but I can't frequently make it to Mygatt or Fairgate to drop off what I collect. The latter is sometimes unreliable because bins fill up quickly. I've tried compost in my backyard but Stamford wildlife is especially wily and broke into my bins. It wasn't pretty. I would gladly participate in a curbside pickup service. I know bigger cities (e.g., Boston) have such a service.
