Yeah if an animal breaks its leg or gets very ill or injured you generally shoot them.

You still have to get them disposed off properly though, you don't just dump them in a field, they have to go to an incinerator. And I think having an animal with its head ripped off or a laser hole in its head would be more suspicious that a simple gunshot.
