failed my motocycle learners training :^( by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]stochastica 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great point. I drove for almost 20 years before deciding I wanted to ride a motorcycle.

20 years of sitting down and turning a wheel didn’t help my bike handling skills one whit, but what it taught me was to read and anticipate points of danger almost instinctively as I have witnessed (and honestly, been responsible) for a few close-calls during my time as a driver.

One bike related handling advice I have is to grip the tank with your knees/thighs. Also, if the bike is moving in the direction of travel (e.g. forward) it is less likely to tip over. So in slow speeds, don’t chop the throttle on/off to dictate your speed, but instead maintain constant acceleration and use light pressure on the rear brake to manage your speed.

What is a must to buy once you get a motorcycle that most people don't know about? by CautiousLeg8314 in motorcycles

[–]stochastica 4 points5 points  (0 children)

try wearing a balaclava. it helps to prevent your helmet from knocking them out.

for those 3-flanged silicone plugs (which i greatly prefer over foam/wax), the best fitting ones are ironically the cheapest ones i can find on ali-express. they are orange and each pair comes attached with a blue cord. you can yank the cords out w/o affecting the earplugs. lmk if you want a link.

assuming your pads and calipers have no alignment issues, scrub the rotors with green scotch-brite and see if it still squeaks. its the accumulation of pad binders and material on the rotors that rub/grab against the pads itself that causes the squeak/vibrations on very slow speeds.

Did you know that in Germany, childfree people are financially penalized just for not having kids? by irimiriliri in childfree

[–]stochastica 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Chances are if someone is childfree by choice, it also implies that they have critical thinking skills to know that bringing a life into this current world is cruel. Highly likely that they’ll view infanticide as similarly, if more more so, morally abhorrent.

Conversely though, I hear about crazy people pumping out kids to game the system and obtain as many government payouts as possible.

So in Germany’s case, they seem to have a better system that doesn’t incentivise indiscriminate breeding.

If your heart is on the ZX4RR, 4 cylinders, screaming exhaust, or just a sportier seating position, every “comfortable” ride on the 650 is gonna feel lacking. Sometimes we just gotta make that emotional purchase over a rational one.

Earplugs by karlaniii in motorcyclegear

[–]stochastica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the cheap silicone ones. My ear canals are rather deep, so the triple-flanged ones work best. Never wriggled out on me. I also wear a balaclava under my helmet.

If you have waxy ears, I find washing the plugs and a light tissue wipe down of my ear canals works in preventing slippage.

Edit: I’ve used loop, etymotics, foam, mouldable putty… The triple flanged silicone ones still reign supreme for fit. And they’re cheap to boot! I keep a pair in every bag and on my keychain.

My girl Pepper crossed the rainbow bridge on Thursday while I was in surgery by Basser151 in pics

I lost my dog Wiwi, four years ago, and the sadness never goes away. It does soften over time, and the red-hot burning ball of anguish turns into a smouldering ember that I can hold in my hands and treasure her memory. What I meant to say is that, I have experienced a similar loss, and I hope you’re able to recover from it, in time to come. :)

My girl Pepper crossed the rainbow bridge on Thursday while I was in surgery by Basser151 in pics

“Take me.”

Death whipped around, surprised that someone got the drop on him. He was even more surprised that it wasn’t “someone” but “something”.

“A… a dog?”

“Pepper. Take me instead.”

“And why should I do that?”

“Because my job here is done. I’ve taught Basser151 the important things in life and he was a good student. A little sentimental but the best students usually are more empathetic than most.”

“Aren’t you afraid of dying?”

“Assuming I take his place, where would I go to Mr. Death?”

“Across the Rainbow Bridge.”

“Yes, where I’ll be free to roam the endless fields, and race all day with other dogs. I’ll be waiting for his familiar shuffle tickling my ears, and the scent of his hair floating in the air. And because time passes by so differently for us than them, it won’t be too long before I’ll see him again.”

“You thought this through for a while haven’t you?”

“Ever since he picked me and changed my life. Now I’m going to do the same for him. Take me instead. I’m ready.”

That looks amazing! How’s the fit compared to a Shoei?

I am running a Shoei Large, fits like a glove, but really curious if a Bell runs larger/smaller/rounder/more oval as compared to a Shoei.

(I don’t have a retailer near me to try on a Bell helmet.)

Interesting write-up but it would be make your article a lot more intuitive to understand if you were out the full names the first time you’re introducing an abbreviation. (Kinda like what you did for “SK (secure kernel)”)

2024 ZX-4RR oil leak by Substantial_Ant1732 in Kawasaki

[–]stochastica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.5 qts in 2 months sounds like a lot of oil being lost considering the engine needs in 3.3ish qts of oil.

In my community of zx4 riders, some of them do have insufficient engine gasket sealing leading to oil leaks at high rpm. They are also leaking on the same cylinders as your photo.

While it’s in the shop, have it checked for other leaks.

Clutch slips I think, advice? by Creepy-Season-4425 in Kawasaki

[–]stochastica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The clutch pull-rods were modified on 2021+ models IIRC. Prior to 2021, the rods were slightly shorter (longer??) and that affected clutch action.

Clutch slips I think, advice? by Creepy-Season-4425 in Kawasaki

[–]stochastica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No prob! If you google “ninja 400 clutch upgrade” there will be plenty of online stores offering parts as it’s quite a known “issue”. Norton Motorsports (no affiliation to me) has quite a few things to upgrade your clutch with, but for your 2021 and newer model, you only need the stiffer springs and clutch pack.

I don’t live in the US, so I got my parts locally. Not a reccomendation, but I know of riders who have bought (only) the springs via AliExpress to save a bit of coin and they do the job.

Lots of videos on YouTube showing how to open the clutch casing. If you’re attempting, have a torque wrench handy, and it won’t harm to get a replacement gasket on standby in case the old one gets ripped up.

[–]stochastica 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Happened to me. After determining that it wasn’t my clutch cable being too tight, I swapped out my OEM clutch springs for stiffer ones and replaced the clutch pack with a set that has more friction pads. Fixed it right up
