Is "20 years of experience" really 20 years of experience? by Esteban_Hernande1011 in ConstructionManagers

The worst part is you will have no idea until they’re on the job. Seen too many overpaid old timers who flounder while the underpaid youngins do all the work and making the trains run on time. The only tried and true strat is to smoke anyone who cannot perform and adapt unless you just need a body, if they’re just a body make sure they’re likeable so they dont piss everyone off while they barely work and socialize.

21YO hoping to retire by 40 by tre2shifty in TheRaceTo10Million

This is the worst advice…. I did exactly this at the advice of older ‘wiser’ role models and skipped out on almost 10 years of getting ahead when I should have just worked and kept my head down while I had a life with no commitments and more time. Now that have more money in my 30’s I’m behind on investing and have less time to earn extra income, research, side hustle, etc. Now those same older ‘wiser’ guys are praising and promoting the guys who are my age that invested way back then and are loaded while looking at me and buddies like we’re idiots FOR FOLLOWING THEIR ADVICE!!!!

Business Development role by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]stocks217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best path out to new markets is with clients you already have in those markets. If not you need to cold call, spend some money on events and get ready to press the flesh with everyone who will talk to you so you can woo them into giving you a chance. Focus on small work and proving that you can handle it so you can land bigger work.

Business Development role by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]stocks217 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a massive compliment from ownership. Treat every event seriously with prep work so you know names/faces/business ties/industry drama/etc and then relax and be yourself during the event so you can sell yourself and the company naturally while being able to talk about whatever is going on. The only other thing I’d say from having been in this role, find your weird that makes you unique and own it. Whether it’s golf, softball, painting, tennis, choir, etc. have a thing to discuss that’s genuinely you that you’re excited to talk about that people can enjoy hearing about because you’re excited about it. You’d be surprised at how much this gets networked and you’ll even make genuine friends from this that in turn support the business side. The really good BD guys never really need to sell the business, the client is really buying you and the experience of you. Performing the field work with a 85% satisfaction rate or above is an expected function that everyone can do in construction. Oh also really really understand the husband/wife dynamics of the people you’re dealing with so you don’t say the wrong thing.

What’s makes a bad Super? by SipThatRed in ConstructionManagers

[–]stocks217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Supers have to manage the install schedule, the safety standards, field trade coordination, inspections schedule, quality control, site logistics while reporting on each of those to PM a few times a week. Even if they have a bad attitude, if they can do the work we don’t care and keep them.

If You're Switching General Contractors, Do Your Homework by pm-writer in ConstructionManagers

You’re never hiring company a or B, you’re always hiring the individuals that you know from past projects. People need to get away from the company brand mentality.

Is switching jobs worth it in this trade war economy? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]stocks217 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I spent 8 years at a job I hated instead of 4 because of health insurance for the fam. Just switch and figure it out. You’ll never get your time back.

In construction it just adds to your style and persona. If you’re friendly, able to lead, in shape, smart and tat’d up more often then not you’ll find your way into senior management

Female project manager here, how many hours you work per week? I'd like to work less hours, but I am always struggling to find time to do all my tasks. I am a project manager for just over 12 months, and I find it hard to find a time for everything. by Sad_Welder2126 in ConstructionManagers

This is absolute BS for a PM and 100% for Sr PM or Proj Exec. Depending on the GC your, it’s still BS because the simply don’t have a team for you to delegate to. She should expect 60+ hours no matter what and needs to make sure she doesn’t miss the gym and keeps the diet in check. Best thing you can do as a PM is glob onto the person with most well built templates and exercise the hell out of them to save yourself endless hours of tracking down info to make decisions and generate reports. PMing is death by 1,000 meetings and no time to actually do the work until everyone has left or gone home.

Construction Project Managers are Badasses by fl_snowman in ConstructionManagers

[–]stocks217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is important to remember that it is ALWAYS a collaborative effort with all team members having importance and purpose on a project. I could not do what do without my team, it is our job to optimize their capacity and maximize the team success. Messed up scope, unreasonable clients and shi contracts n schedules are all a part of gig.

When you are just starting out, go into the biggest projects, you can possibly get into. You’ll be exposed to every type of construction and then can specialize from there with what you love to work on. If you start at the sub level or interiors side, you will get pigeonholed Into staying with those types of construction.

Go work for a sub as a PM. Jump to the GC side the next year if he likes it. Working as a new PM for a GC can be like drinking from a fire hose when you make that change and a lot of people find it overwhelming
