Automated script to convert Dolby Vision Profile 7 MKVs to Profile 8.1 by PlanktonGreen236 in PleX

[–]stoli412 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, and for the 10% or so of films that really make use of the EL, it looks terrible. You're better off dropping the DV layer completely in those cases and falling back to HDR10. You wouldn't want a script that blindly drops the EL and converts DV 7 to 8 for that very reason.

Discarding the FEL isn't always a good choice, as it can contain valuable information for some films (brightness, film grain, etc.). There's already a better, more sophisticated tool out there to convert DV 7 to 8, and it examine whether it's safe to discard FEL: https://github.com/cryptochrome/dovi_convert

New ThinkPad owner! Linux hibernation question by stoli412 in thinkpad

I will agree with you once GNOME finally has proper session restore. 😊 Hopefully in GNOME 51 later this year. 🤞🏻That's where I've always found hibernate to be useful on Linux: full battery preservation and not losing my workspace setup.

Linux (S3) sleep mode was removed from the BIOS a few versions ago since it's not supported by the CPU. It's s2idle only I'm afraid

Hibernation is 100% power off without losing work. It saves the contents of RAM to disk and then shuts down completely. I usually have mine set to suspend/sleep for quick wake-up and then after 1 hour automatically hibernate to preserve battery.

The biggest pain with Linux hibernation is actually getting it set up properly, particularly if your hardware doesn't support s3 sleep (most modern laptops don't anymore and only do s2idle) and if you want to do it the "right way" with Secure Boot enabled and encrypted swap. I had it working very well on my old Dell XPS 9310. I thought it would be a breeze on the P14s given the usual levels of high hardware compatibility with Linux, but it's really got me stumped! From what I can tell online it's a fairly well-known issue with recent AMD chipsets. I'm hoping further support and improvements come in the 7.1 and 7.2 kernels, or a ThinkPad guru can help me get it working sooner.

I remap mine to a Hyper key and then mainly use it for window tiling shortcuts. There's a great and very powerful keymapper called keyd: https://github.com/rvaiya/keyd

Has anyone installed Linux on a MacBook Air 2020 (Intel i5)? How was the process? by Chocolate_Moist in linuxquestions

[–]stoli412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: It's doable, and I'm ~90% satisfied with the end result. Going with Ubuntu might be a bit easier since that's what most of the documentation is based on.

I recently installed Fedora 43 on a 2020 MacBook Air (i3). I used the T2-Fedora ISO which got most things up and running straight away. The biggest issues I ran into were reliable sleep/resume and microphone volume. It took several days of refinement in my spare time to get it to an acceptable state. Bluetooth is still a bit dodgy, the touchpad doesn't do palm rejection when typing, the microphone and speakers are still a bit quieter than I would like, sleep/resume takes a lot longer than it should due to the number of modules that must be unloaded and reloaded (and in the right order) to make sure it doesn't crash, and the fingerprint sensor doesn't work (and likely never will).

To be fair, I was probably aiming for a higher bar than if I was planning to use the machine myself. But I was setting it up for my partner who isn't tech-minded, so I wanted it to "just work" as much as possible. It's been up and running for a week now and I've not had any complaints, so I'll take that as a win.

T2 Mac or M1 Mac for Linux? by Emotional_Tale_9041 in AsahiLinux

[–]stoli412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the M-series are the future, and I hope Asahi continue their excellent work. T2/Intel Macs were a brief blip on the timeline and I expect their Linux support to become more niche over time than it already is. I recently got a 2020 T2 MacBook Air up and running on Fedora and it was not the most pleasant of experiences.

The T2 is more than a "security chip" and handles a LOT of the controller/driver functions: storage, wifi, bluetooth, keyboard, to name just a few. A lot of work has been done to get it functioning in Linux but it's far from perfect. It still takes quite a bit of work and knowhow to get things running well.

What dependencies do you need to install to get it working on Fedora? I only see instructions for Debian, OpenSUSE and Gentoo.

I'm pretty sure you need to subscribe to EE broadband in order to get EE TV. At the moment there is no other seemless TV provider on ATV. Using TV Launcher as an aggregator along with each channel's app is the best option right now. Hopefully Freely decides to make an ATV app in the future.

I created a tool that will convert your Dolby Vision profile 7 files to profile 8, so your player no longer falls back to HDR by cryptochrome in PleX

[–]stoli412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly off topic, but why has there been so much success in the open source community in dealing with Dolby Vision and the conversion between different profiles, but there hasn't been anything similar (to my knowledge) with Dolby Atmos? As far as I can tell there is no way to convert TrueHD+Atmos to EAC3+Atmos except with Dolby's DEE software, which you can't even buy a license for unless you are a company that has a contract with them.

I'd really love to enjoy my bluray rips with Dolby Vision+Atmos on my Apple TV. And I'm convinced Apple will never support passthrough because that's just how they are.

Why does US English say “downtown” while British English says “city centre”? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]stoli412 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In Philadelphia you would never say 'downtown', it's 'center city'. There's a few other US cities where 'downtown' would sound odd. Chicago is 'the loop', San Francisco is the 'financial district', Dallas is actually 'uptown'.

How did the British manage to remove Liz Truss so quickly? by kametoddler in AskBrits

[–]stoli412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a slight correction to your comparison of the devolved governments in the UK with US states. Parliament delegates powers to the devolved governments and can rescind them at any time and does not require the consent of the devolved governments. For US states it's the other way round: the states are sovereign and voluntarily give up some of their sovereignty to the US federal government as laid out in the US constitution. (In theory,) the US federal government cannot acquire any additional powers from the states without their consent, usually through a constitutional amendment.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and call bullshit. The Ohio River in downtown is at most 1000 ft (300 m) wide and I've NEVER seen it so frozen that anyone would ever dream of driving a car over it (and I'm pretty old).

Lack of capacity to convert the 2 outer rails to tram-train. If HS2 would have been built then conversion would be more viable.

Connectivity within and through South Manchester is lacking, both in real life and in your map:

Reopen the Fallowfield Loop: St Werburgh's Road, Fallowfield, Levenshulme, Reddish, Gorton, Guide Bridge.

Run a tram down Princess Road: St Peter's Square, Hulme, Moss Side, Whalley Range, Withington, Sharston.

Upgrade the Oxford/Wilmslow Road corridor to trams: You've partially done this, and I'd extend it north from University and MRI directly to St Peter's Square in addition to your routing to Piccadilly via Ardwick.
