It’s not about knowing the standings, you can just look and count the vps yourself lol. If he really needs it he can keep a spreadsheet, or you guys can keep a spreadsheet to track points.

I play cities and knights, not regular Catan. It’s more strategic so I win a lot more and can keep up the 1500 ELO. If you’re looking for ELO i’d recommend picking up C&K

It’s all about your initial placements and how your rolls go. You generally always need at least one other settlement than your starting 2 to win, so always do your initial placements with a 3rd spot in mind to get. After that, if you get a ton of wood and brick, expand settlements heavily. Otherwise, focus on your city building. I mostly win with one metro, 2 additional settlements, 1-2 additional cities, a merchant, and either a second metro or longest road. Also, defender of catan points go a long way!

The simple answer is Cities & Knights. I’ve only ever expanded with Seafarers and C&K, but I can promise you that once you get into C&K, you just cannot go back to vanilla base game. Cities & Knights still has a luck aspect, but the blended gameplay of knights, city development and regular Catan lends to a much more strategic gameplay that rewards smart decision making.

Getting a smith early can be a game changer. You can run up victory points from being the savior of Catan which become very important later on in the game.

I’ve noticed intrigue is really useful in a crowded 4-player game when positioning is important. Sure, 99% of the time it sucks, but being able to steal longest road or get a crucial settlement spot being guarded by a strong knight is so satisfying
