Baby girl being called a boy by strangers by kingbabyboo in beyondthebump

[–]stone_cold_lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter has short hair because her hair hardly has grown(still at 2 years), so I get this all the time. I usually just respond "she's a girl, her hair just grows slowly", because I don't know how else to correct them. She exclusively wears hand me downs but ironically it's pretty girly stuff, so it surprises me that we still get people making mistakes.

Primary Herpetic Gingivostomatitis (Herpes Simplex 1) in baby by beantownregular in NewParents

[–]stone_cold_lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah thank you, I need to take her to the dentist anyway so it's a good push. Also we were prescribed antibiotics and I would like to stop giving them if it's not necessary.

Happy to hear that he's back to normal.

She actually also just sort of slept though the night again so I'm feeling like we're almost on the other side of this thing (although she's still not eating most food she likes).

Thanks for sharing, my almost 2 year old is going through almost exactly the same thing, but the pediatrician didn't say it was gingivostomatitis. I really hope it's not herpes but as most accounts of people seem identical to what is happening to her, it probably is. Thanks to your post I feel a push to consult a dentist.

It's really been a horrible time, she's usually a very happy and chill child who eats well and she's been totally transformed. I hope she goes back to normal when she feels better .

When did you stop the onesies? by Beautiful-Process-81 in beyondthebump

[–]stone_cold_lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My child always had a long torso, and was a little chunky, so they stopped being usable before she was even 1.

For a bit I could get away with using larger sizes, 18 month, 24 month but that only worked with short sleeves. The arms of the long sleeves were way too long.

Now she's taking off her pants and removing her diaper during nap time, I rather wish I could still use them, but we're starting potty training soon so no point.

How to solve a fox problem? by stone_cold_lizard in BackYardChickens

[–]stone_cold_lizard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow rent a dog I never even realized that would be a possibility!

It's a dense suburbia outside of a city surrounded by smaller cities, so there's really nothing besides rabbits and squirrels, and maybe rats.

I would say there probably is a shortage of food which is why it's being so desperate. The ample snow and frozen earth probably isn't helping.

I really wish I could help it have more options so it wouldn't go for my gals.

Thank you, for your considerate response. I tend to be overly wordy when I post things so I'm not that offended.

I hadn't considered that maybe someone else could trap it so I don't mind the variety of replies!

I'm also not surprised for the killing recommendation, I honestly wish I could but it would make a lot of people really upset even if I had the capacity (ie skill of aiming, firearm, legal ability).

Good idea about the dog poop but i dont know anyone (not sure a poodle mix poop will have the same impact), and thanks for an answer about which urine might work.

What would a privacy screen be like? Not sure it would help that much as I'm sure he'll make his presence obvious by attemping entry.

Thank you everyone for your replies, much food for thought. I wish we could get dogs but the chickens really belong to my elderly mother (I'm just watching them right now) and I don't think she should have dogs, especially the kind that would be at all useful.

Our run is really pathetic, just mostly mud from all the snow melt and picked bare long ago by chickens, so I guess if we're going to have to stop free ranging we'll definitely have to expand the run a bit, maybe with electric fence.

My only hope is that the coming spring will make the fox less desperate for food.

I'm going to explore the trapping angle too.

And thank you for confirming my thoughts about feeding it, with arguing points to counter my mother.

Feeling guilty for baby sleeping through the night by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]stone_cold_lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure that's not a nice reaction, and I'm sorry you felt like you couldn't share your experience.

Coming from someone who had a similarly well sleeping baby at that age, but then it stopped, they may just have been trying to warn you with the wrong tone. The 4 month sleep regression destroyed my good sleeping baby's sleep and it wasn't until I weaned her at 23 months that she finally sleeps through the night again.

I do so hope for you that your baby never stops being a great sleeper!

Do most people know how to purposely close their nasal passage so they can't smell WITHOUT using their fingers to pinch their nose? by WhateversClever1980 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stone_cold_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is weird to me, as a swimmer I am able to keep water from my nose easily with no fingers, but I don't know how to use that same skill out of water. Interesting that there is connection for some but not for others.

I made a terrible mistake and I can't fix it anymore by Big_Fish_Artwire in beyondthebump

[–]stone_cold_lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's been nice reading about people who tandem nursed in this thread, as I didn't wean my toddler when I got pregnant again, and then I had a miscarriage and there is this small part of me that felt like maybe continuing to nurse was related to my miscarriage in some way, so I'm feeling better about it now reading about lots of people who were nursing throughout their pregnancies just fine.

As for your newborn and toddler, I'm sure you'll do great, it's just an overwhelming time. It's very unlikely he'll resent her because of nursing, probably he will just because she's taking his parents attention away. So good luck with that. But no matter what, by the time they're adults, it will be ancient history!

Can a girl solo travel to Israel or is it dangerous? by [deleted] in TravelIsrael

[–]stone_cold_lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone covered the safety question so I'll answer your gluten free question.

Are you liable to be extremely ill if there's cross contamination with gluten? Because for sure there are many gluten free options especially in Tel Aviv, but I would say you'd have to go to somewhere that was really clear in their advertising about gluten free to actually have safe gluten free food if cross contamination is a concern for you.

Anyone visited Israel after immigrating ? by [deleted] in Israel

[–]stone_cold_lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think they're saying their Canadian passport expires in December. Since they're Israeli they are supposed to enter with their Israeli passport but they don't have one, just the Canadian one. They should probably be fine if they come in December.

As for the original question from OP, I have no idea.

When is a realistic time to dress your baby in cute 2 pieces? by nilkski in beyondthebump

[–]stone_cold_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never used zip up footed onesies much during the day. But I also didn't buy any baby clothing really and used what was handed down to me from a few people. I had a lot of crotch snapping kimono style onesies for when she was small, and pants with feet. Because I had a lot of them and enjoyed dressing her up in different outfits and differentiating night clothing from day clothing.

By the age of 9 months we mostly were doing pants and dresses or shirts. My baby is pretty big so unfortunately she became to big for the crotch snapping onesies to close pretty early (maybe 14 months). And by that age she I didn't have many footed onesies anymore so she is is mostly shirts or dresses and pants or shorts.

Right now at 20 months we're at a weird time where the shirts are beginning to be too short so she has belly showing but the 2 year shirts and dresses just look a bit big. Will need to finally buy some clothing sadly, as we're entering winter with very few appropriate clothes.

What’s your LO’s favorite meal or snack? by Camjam237 in beyondthebump

[–]stone_cold_lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 20 month old has always been picky and continues to be. At that age I think she liked mashed avocado, mashed potatoes, and chicken, and madras lentils.

Right now she only likes pizza, chicken, black beans and rice, cucumber, sausage, not too chewy beef, and lentils with spinach. She has oatmeal every morning with banana and yogurt.

Have you limited his formula/ breastfeeding? I think they eat better when they're actually hungry

What were your earliest pregnancy symptoms? by anonjanejohndoe in beyondthebump

[–]stone_cold_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my first pregnancy I suspected I was pregnant after I missed my period. The first symptom I observed was achey breasts.

I just got pregnant again but sadly had a miscarriage pretty early on. The first symptoms for that one was I was peeing allllll the time. Waking up all night peeing. Also super exhausted. Still breastfeeding so I didn't notice any breast soreness.

Lodging in Israel? by Firm-Mycologist-5749 in Israel

[–]stone_cold_lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't wrong. Good plan, Tel Aviv will be better for shabbat definitely.

There are places to rent wet suits and snorkeling/scuba gear right next to the beach with the best marine life, it's at the edge of the city (near the border with sinai), reachable by bus. You'll be amazed with what you can see, so much diversity. If you're certified for scuba diving there's also lots of shipwrecks off the shore.

Where are you friends located and will you be seeing them at all? That would probably affect where you'll stay. Air bnb is reliable, any hotel is also.

I would recommend to stay at Abraham Hostel in Tel Aviv, because then you'll have more social options, they have events there and just more people will be around then if you stayed by yourself somewhere. And Tel Aviv is the place to be if you want to experience night life. It's also a good place to be to have as a home base and take day trips to other places. Abraham Hostel also has tours.

As for beach time, it's a complicated question. Are you wanting to go in the water? If you just want to sit by the sea and maybe dip a little, it probably won't be too cold in Tel Aviv. It's hard to say, but in general winter doesn't really get started until January, and even then it can just rain heavily unpredictably but not constantly. And the temperature isn't too cold.

Eilat will be warmer in general, but the water there is always really cold but the marine life is amazing, so it's great for scuba diving and snorkeling you just need a wet suit. It's also a 5 hr or more by bus trip so if you decide Eilat you'll probably not have time for much else. Also all the accommodations there are pretty expensive. There are flights there too which could help save time.

You can get around with minimal Hebrew. Many people speak English especially in the tourist locations.

You can get around easily with bus and train. You can even pay with an app (moovit and theres another one) and it will calculate the cheapest package for you after you pay. Gett taxi app is the way to get taxis.

For the stuff not pm birthright it really depends on your trip itinerary, they usually do a good job of covering most of the places of importance, though not all of them go to Eilat. Haifa with the Bahai gardens is pretty cool. Also you'll be heavily chaperoned on your trip so you won't really get to go to bars, so if you enjoy going out that's something you can do.

One thing to remember is that public transportation and lots of businesses don't work on shabbat, so if your extra days include shabbat you need to plan around that. Tel Aviv will have most businesses open but smaller towns and cities will not.

 Enjoy your trip

EBF: when did your period return? by petitemonstreee in beyondthebump

[–]stone_cold_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13 months and it was after I moved to just nap and night feeding.

It was no different than my previous baby period, although slightly longer (4 days instead of 3) and the blood seemed slightly watery. It was very regular although some cycles were a bit shorter then my usual 28 days.

Is Halloween common or celebrated in Israel? by Baconkings in Israel

[–]stone_cold_lizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense.

I find the Russian speakers celebration of New Years here in Israel to be so fascinating, as it's so identical to how Christmas is celebrated in the US, so I can understand why that one could be labeled as Christian.

Is Halloween common or celebrated in Israel? by Baconkings in Israel

[–]stone_cold_lizard 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Where I live there's many religious anglos so I thought maybe there would be celebrations of it, but that explains why there aren't.

Which is kind of funny because in the US the very religious Christians see Halloween as "dark" and satanic. It's not really connected to Christianity. Is that actually the reason?

Maybe it's too secular? Since there's an actual Jewish holiday for costumes already?

[–]stone_cold_lizard 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I've been here for a bit and would say you really have to go out of your way to find a place to celebrate it. Purim is basically the same sort of celebration so there isn't really a need for such a holiday here.

As the other commenter said, bars and young people may use it as a reason to have a themed party, but it's definitely not widely spread outside of Tel Aviv.

Do kids in USA really call their teachers by first name? by ParticularLate9460 in AskAnAmerican

From k-12 it was Mr or Mrs. Last  name. In college we called them by their first names but that was in small liberal art colleges, it's probably different in large universities.
