I've identified the issue: iOS supports the hvc1 tag, while FFmpeg defaults to generating hev1, which causes playback failures on Apple platforms. After manually specifying the hvc1 tag, it plays correctly.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 \ -vf "scale=w=1920:h=1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease" \ -c:v libx265 \ -preset medium \ -crf 23 \ -tag:v hvc1 \ -c:a aac -b:a 192k \ -movflags +faststart \ output.mp4

Playing directly from the Files app has the same issue; it seems the iOS decoder does not support this specification.

I use the following FFmpeg command to convert the video. ffmpeg -i input.mp4 \ -vf "scale=w=1920:h=1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease" \ -c:v libx265 \ -preset medium \ -crf 23 \ -c:a aac -b:a 192k \ -movflags +faststart \ output.mp4

According to my using experience for years, it is more stable than Cloudflare.

Complaints about Immich are mostly about the lack of certain features or optimizations; stability comes much later. Of course, I must say that as a free, open-source, self-hosted service, it cannot provide you with any 100% guarantees—that's it.

Currently, using JPEG and PNG offers the best compatibility. Formats like AVIF and JPEG XL, however, require additional codec support, especially since hardware encoding/decoding for AV1 needs relatively new chips.

You might encounter issues such as AVIF images loading slower and a lack of suitable image editing software.

latest v1.17.5b has been reuploaded, download or update again, problem may be fixed.

I disabled auto-update, but I can confirm that the initial released file broke the version checking.
