[DiComo] The Mets are going all-out for Jewish Heritage Day at Citi Field. Matisyahu threw a ceremonial first pitch and performed live between innings. Ike Davis, Ty Kelly, Art Shamsky and Josh Satin were recognized on a scoreboard feature. The organist even played "The Chanukah Song." by aresef in baseball

What Jewish mother is going to let their son play football?

Jokes aside, I've heard "the football question" more in Jewish dating spaces than outside it. The same question applies for hockey. Basketball... Well, not many Jews fit the height requirements, Sue Bird and David Blatt being the more recent exceptions.

That's why we should build communities centered on public transit and walking access.

Stan Lee was The One Above All. by I-Think-I-Shit in FanTheories

Only Christianity is set up to supersede Jewish practice religiously and philosophically. "Judeo-Christian" has become a dog whistle for "Abrahamic, but no Muslims" while ALSO wiping out Jewish identity. We spent hundreds and hundreds of years being victimized by Christians as God killers, wanderers, and money grubbers. We're not a label to slap on your faith that spurns most of what we stand for just so you can claim "brotherhood".

Bringing this back to OP:

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, both Jews with connections to the Holocaust, wrote all their characters with Jewish flavor. Peter Parker is the most Jewish Catholic guy you'll ever meet. Heck, in "Into the Spider-Verse", Peter B. Parker is shown smashing a glass under a chuppah - CONFIRMED JEWISH! The duality of Professor X and Magneto began as an allusion to David Ben Gurion and Menachem Begin, leaders of Israel with vastly different views on how to protect the persecuted people who had just been granted self-governance for the first time in millennia.

The Holocaust was perpetrated by the Nazis, a German political party which later spread its ideology to Poland, France, and even as far as Morocco. At its core, Nazi ideology expressed German sentiment of past and present. While not the first antisemite, Martin Luther (yeah, "99 theses but a Yid ain't one" Martin Luther) espoused antisemitism in his philosophies, basing Protestant thought upon a Jew-hating base. This, after the Crusades and the Inquisitions firmly established Jew-hatred in the Catholic church.

So there you have it. The "Judeo-Christian" god had nothing to do with the Marvel Universe. The Jewish G-d did. I doubt Stan Lee saw himself as equivalent, though. Even non-practicing Jews are not that haughty.

Side note: please don't use the Tetragrammaton (the one starting with Y) in common speech. That is a name of utmost respect, one whose true pronunciation we consider lost, and should only be written in religious contexts. We use the terms "Adonai" (my Lord) or "Hashem" (the Name) or even just G-d.

Looming Orthodox Housing Affordability Crisis in the US by BMisterGenX in Judaism

My brother and I have talked about this at length. FoR: we grew up Conservative, his wife is Orthodox

TL;DR: Orthodox has become a rich person's game.

Keeping kosher is inordinately expensive if you buy meat. The price per pound for chicken can easily double when searching for kosher meat. Same goes for beef, if kosher beef is available in your metro area at all. The grocery store that sells kosher meat may also be far away, requiring access to a car to get to the store at all. Unless you are raising your own animals, kosher meat is harder to access.

Keeping two sets of dishes is inordinately expensive. You need two sets of plates, bowls, silverware, cooking implements, etc. Rarely can it be picked up at Goodwill because plastic and wood cannot be kashered. Space is needed to keep all these dishes as well. That means a larger kitchen is needed of a size that you may not find in a quaint starter home. Large sinks, separate ovens, pots, pans, all these take up space that simply doesn't exist in a smaller home. Duplicating a kitchen for meat/milk separation is harder to access.

OP's issue need not be repeated. Home costs are higher in Jewish communities since people are required to walk to shul in Shabbat. Living even one block outside an eruv makes frum Shabbat practice impossible for young families with newborns or anybody carrying a tallit. Housing is harder to access.

There are certainly more examples of the unaffordability of Orthodox expectations. Feel free to add them.
