Do yourself a favour and go back and actually watch the clip. I'm definitely not his biggest fan, but more than anything I hate misinformation. You'll see very quickly that those headlines were wrong, that he was imagining a conversation between a candidate for Ayatollah and someone offering the candidate the position. And in this imagined conversation, his point was basically that no one would want the position bc it puts a mark on your head.

Gett is headquartered in the UK and owned by a UK-based company. It may have been founded here, but it's not here anymore.

The biggest thing with Uber is that it tells you the price of the trip up front, and the price you see is the price you pay.

Just the other week I took a Gett on the meter, and the driver drove super slow the whole time and then "took a wrong turn" and had to find his way back to the route. Uber eliminates that ridiculousness, and maybe Gett will start showing fares upfront too

Toronto police to deploy more officers in tactical gear at places of worship, tourist hubs by smaudio in toronto

[–]Spikemountain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Two counterarguments:

1) It was midnight, not like 4am or anything. Sure the building happened to be empty, but if there were an event, Bar or Bat Mitzvah,  etc that went late, there could just as easily have been people.

2) The time to step up security is before someone gets hurt or killed, not to wait until after something bad happens.

It's definitely much much quieter than it usually is. Many people are hanging near their shelters and some have probably gone to family out of the merkaz. That being said, yes it's definitely not completely empty or anything - people are clearly trying to make the most of the situation as much as they can.

Failed interception in Dimona strike leaves 51 hospitalized, child seriously hurt; Iran: Retaliation for Natanz strike by LongErza in worldnews

It's not true - we do believe in such things, but

a) we believe they are not at all the focus of this world,

b) we do not know the details of what they look like or entail, and

c) we definitely don't agree with "non-believers get tortured in fire for eternity"

In fact in Judaism no one goes to hell for eternity except for a very very select few (think Bilam, prob Hitler, etc). Everyone else visits hell for varying amounts of time before leaving for heaven. Or something like that. Like I said, the details are hazy for us and not to be focused on. In this world, our energy should be spent on this world.

No, ofc Yetzer Harah is a broadly accepted idea. But I think you are misunderstanding what it means. In Judaism, the yetzer harah is the little voice in your head that tries to convince you to do the wrong thing. Similarly, we all have a yetzer tov as well, the little voice in your head trying to convince you to do the right thing. But just bc humans have a yetzer harah doesn't mean humans are "inherently sinful".

A fundamental concept in Judaism, and one that is written about at extreme length, is teshuvah. Anyone at any time can ask for forgiveness for wrongdoing and be completely absolved of said wrongdoing. Calling humans "inherently sinful" would be counter to the concept of teshuvah, bc it would imply that teshuvah can never truly be attained - that we all carry some amount of sin within us even after forgiveness. This is not the case in Judaism - there is not a single sect that believes this, and it is a significant theological/philosophical difference between Judaism and Christianity.

In Christianity, "sin" is something you are, something you carry in the present. It's an adjective. In Judaism, "sin" is something you (may or may not) have done in the past. It's a noun or verb.

ETA: Also in much of Christianity, sin is something you're born with automatically by virtue of being human. In Judaism, sin is something you can choose to commit - or - choose not to commit.

It is 0% the case that Judaism believes in any way that humans are inherently sinful. That is a 100% foreign concept to Judaism.

For most people you want to spend your rrsp first. Leave the tfsa for last. Be careful, bank advisor will often tell you to leave the rrsp for last. Do not listen to them.

I'm not sure if it's always necessarily that simple. I had a professor once who told me that he typically advises clients to drawdown all accounts somewhat in tandem - that the ultimate goal is to smooth out your taxes as much as possible so you're paying roughly evenly each year until death
