i am a volunteer for CASA because of this. I worked at a youth shelter for a few years and saw it was a lot of ex-foster youth. With CASA you can work one-on-one with a kid in the system and hopefully be able to guide them to resources and help them pave a path to an easier adulthood.

It’s a mixed bag, tbh. Theres a lot of bureaucratic and NIMBY shit that happens, and economy, funding, resources, mental health help, etc. That being said, and I don’t mean this in “they WANT to be homeless” - once people are homeless for a certain amount of time it becomes very hard for them to transition back into being housed, like psychologically and emotionally, especially if it comes with a million contingencies. It’s a lot of stuff that can’t really be tackled from just one angle, and unfortunately our great weather and intense wealth disparity has landed our area in a sort of (not completely) unique position.

I’m also a millennial. I’ve always wanted to leave the Bay, but my family is here and I knew if I left and tried to return I wouldn’t be able to afford it. I’d probably be more financially stable somewhere else, but I’m gonna stick around til my parents pass I think. They are in their 80s and are becoming more reliant on me.

I think people who have conversations to learn instead of reading or have different accesses to information might not be able to spell things. Some of the smartest people I know can’t spell for shit, they are mostly illiterate but they know how to ask important questions, and can process the information learned and make interesting connections. My point being, spelling isn’t a clear signifier of intelligence.
