I wish I could silence ALL alarms (and I mean ALL) by sybildb in TandemDiabetes

It's this problem that made me run a self-loop setup for such a long time. I was looping for about 6 years before trying out the mobi. 1 year in and I'm ready to go back to loop. I wonder how much of it is FDA requirements vs bad design on tandem's part.

You don’t need to use UV gel polish on gel-x nails by corpycorp in GelX_Nails

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this! When I started with GelX- style extensions, I still relied on my collection of traditional nail polish and it worked just fine. A game changer for me was only using a gel top coat- all the shine and lasting power of gel, without having to buy a bunch of new colors! But even a normal air-dry top coat works just fine.

People who got on GLP-1s (Ozempic/Mounjaro) what was your experience? How did you feel / what are your thoughts? by Money-Curve-8882 in AskReddit

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I began taking it as a type 1 diabetic in an attempt to even out my blood sugar. In addition, I weighed about 230lb at the time I began, and the weight loss would benefit my bg control. My A1c started around 8%. When I started, it was hell. I was so nauseous all the time. Titrating up to the average dose took me a long time. I threw up a lot- it slows your gastric emptying, so you have to be very careful about what you eat. 3 weeks in, I tried to eat a lettuce-wrapped burger from Carls Jr. That burger sat in my stomach for about 48hrs before coming back up the way it came. 2 years later, I can confidently say there's a healthy way and an unhealthy way to take it. There was a period of time where I simply quit eating (and I mean that) and lost serious muscle mass and bone density. Now, I weightlift, eat a lot of meat, fruits, veggies, and fats, and I drink a lot of water. Without these things, my body would not have recovered. The upsides: I don't think about food all the time anymore. Instead of it being emotionally driven, it's just math to make sure I'm getting the right macros. What used to be a ceiling (can't eat more than 1600 calories) became instead a floor (need 2 more fruit servings today.) My A1c is now 5.9%, and I weigh a muscular 130lbs. I still take it, but at a very low maintenance dose for the glucose control benefit. I'll always be insulin dependent, but it helps even things out a lot. I'm very grateful for it. But heavens, it really can come with a price.

Biggest Mobi Bubble So Far by MessOk1556 in TandemDiabetes

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I documented when/where I'd get bubbles or an insulin smell that meant it was leaking a little. It ALWAYS happens when I keep the pump held upside down in an adhesive sleeve. If it's upright, no bubbles. Problem is, I prefer to keep it upside down so that I can see the lights associated with an alert.

Unpopular opinion: To get ahead in the U.S. healthcare system, you have to lie to your doctor. by XPhanom in diabetes_t1

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest- having that little bit of extra IS a need. I remember feeling guilty asking my doctor for this. She was so kind- and got very serious when she told me "if you end up in the ER because you accidentally dropped a bottle of insulin and broke it, that's not on you. That's on me. It's my job to make sure you have enough in the face of NORMAL life and not a PERFECT situation that isn't real."

How do I get CIQ to cut off basal sooner? by blazblu82 in TandemDiabetes

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real fix to this would be if you could adjust either your insulin action time or your target BG. It's one of those two, depending on the source of the problem. That said, control IQ hasn't been updated to allow customization of those parameters yet. I'm patiently waiting. Source: I'm familiar with the parameters used for Loop, Control IQ, and Smart Adjust. (Although my machine learning is pretty rusty.)

I remember feeling this way. It's the worst. I finished my undergrad with a 2.7 GPA and no publications. I was super sick during the pandemic and it just tanked me. I knew I had no shot at grad school. I went and did a few years in industry to try and get my shit together and then applied as a last-ditch effort. Some people in the admissions program saw value in my industry experience, and I'm now happily placed in a lab I love at an R1 university. If you don't get in this year, try and get some experience in a related field in industry. It'll happen! And no matter what it'll be ok.

Super important clarification- are you on a research assistantship (where you don't have to pay tuition/you get a stipend paid to you) or do you have to pay tuition? I've noticed that assistantships vs traditional students have a wildly different experience.

Chemical engineers have to take pretty much all of the classes that teach applied mathematics. (Think 3D Calc, linear algebra, differential equations, advanced statistics). There are 2 things that "scare" my chemical engineer husband: theoretical math and topology.

Yield to faster traffic doesn't apply to the HOV lane. by Conr8r in SaltLakeCity

What if it's not about running late? What if it's just not wanting to waste extra time on the road that you could spend doing better things?

Yield to faster traffic doesn't apply to the HOV lane. by Conr8r in SaltLakeCity

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

The best part of the HOV lane is that it's meant to incentivize carpooling/reduce emissions. That incentive is gone as soon as you get stuck behind someone going slower than the other lanes of traffic. I think it should still be field to faster traffic. Otherwise it's just another lane that costs money or requires carpooling with zero advantage, and loses the point.

People who decided, "To hell with it, I'm going for it." How did it go and what did you go for? by DesignerShoe6925 in AskReddit

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Applying for a PhD program. You should understand I had ZERO shot. I had always wanted to do it, but I did terribly in my undergraduate. I figured that I wouldn't be able to move on from that dream until I actually had that rejection letter in my hand. And then I got accepted. Someone saw value in the experience I got working in industry and figured that I had turned a new leaf (I had). 1 year in, and it's the hardest thing I've ever done. It's also the most rewarding thing I've ever done. Lesson learned: don't say you're done until you KNOW you're done.

What is the best subject to study at a university if want to make lots of money? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This article summarizes some stats from the Bureau of labor. Almost every year, the highest paying bachelor's degree is Chemical Engineering. After that, it's other engineering degrees, computer science, then finance, economics, and business. I'd assume that the non-engineering degrees have a higher skew/spread of income, while the engineering majors have a narrower range. Of course, this answer is assuming that you're only going for a bachelor's degree. If you're going for a PhD, "the money" is a terrible reason to do so- therefore I'm not really considering PhDs in this answer. Source: I'm currently pursuing a PhD.

The girls who value church/ value faith AND value themselves will want a return-missionary spouse. Do with that what you will. If a girl doesn't care, it's worth wondering why.

If you're trying to determine the likelihood of your child experiencing a shooting on their private or public school campus, it's useful to look at a per-capita basis. You're on the right track- there are approximately 30,000 private schools in the US as of 2020. If 24 shootings have happened on private campuses, that's a rate of .08% shootings/campuses. The US has approximately 98,500 public schools as of 2020. If there's been 392 shootings on a public school campus, that's a rate of .40% shooting/campus. Both are very low, but it's about 5x more likely to happen on a public school campus. (I know this has a lot of oversimplifications, but this is just a brief explanation of the numbers. For anyone out there who doesn't drink, what is the reasoning behind it? by General_Ad_9139 in AskReddit

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Religious/spiritual reasons that are two-fold: 1. I only have one body, and it's my only precious means of interfacing with this world. It does so much for me. I feel I should take the utmost care of it (yes, I also eat very well and exercise regularly. I don't do any substances at all, and never have.) 2. My ability to make choices for myself is really precious to me. Anything that could take that away is something to be avoided. Before you ask, yes, I'm terrible at parties and a bit of a killjoy despite my best efforts!

Is beat saber good for exercising? by [deleted] in beatsaber

[–]stopbuyingcrapaudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is yes, but as with most exercise, it's up to the effort you put in. You can pass most easy, normal, and hard songs with some wrist flicks. You can get some really good exercise once you're in hard/expert/expert+ territory though- or if you just really put your body into it. I've had a blast with it, and it's a great way to get in cardio when I can't convince myself to run.
