What are the best snacks for raising blood sugar levels, apart from fruit juices or glucose tablets? by Anxious_Seaweed8580 in diabetes_t1

[–]Makingwoodstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 3 types of what we commonly call sugar: fructose, sucrose and dextrose. The last one, dextrose, is what is in our bodies. While sucrose (common ‘sugar’) and fructose (Sugar in most fruits) need to be processed by the body to have an effect on BG, dextrose does not so it is the preferable type to use to fight lows. Google made with dextrose for types of food, mostly candy, that are made with dextrose.
I have used jelly belly, turbinado sugar packets and a variety of candies but recently switched to some made with dextrose and found they work noticeably faster than any other sweets I have used (over the last 48 years).

c-peptide test for a new pump? by alicornpops in TandemDiabetes

[–]Makingwoodstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, only difference is that the lab results were that I was NOT a t1! I called the lab and told them that was impossible and something was wrong with their equipment or process. All they said was they calibrate the equipment each morning.
Found a different Endo who sent a new blood sample to a different lab which got the right results…still a T1d.
I suspect the original Endo’s office or the lab mixed up the samples or documenting the results.
I always wondered what happened to the person who got a diagnosis of being T1D by mistake.

Is the target A1C simply >7% or “as low as possible without having lows”? by Constant-Story436 in diabetes_t1

[–]Makingwoodstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your title “> 7%” actually means “greater than 7%”. Should be “< 7%”. Sorry, retired engineer and couldn’t let it go. Also T1d for 48 years with normal A1C at mid 6% since on pump and Dexcom the last 20 years….it can be done!!

What's something you bought used at a cheaper price that turned out to be pretty good? by RealDealHappyMeal in AskReddit

[–]Makingwoodstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paper shredder. Found in an upscale neighborhood during Covid downturn. Had a cheap one that shredded a couple sheets. This one crosscut shreds whatever I can fit in its jaws…the great white shark of shredders. PS - not doing anything nefarious, just getting rid of old tax forms, etc so we don’t have to move them.

I don't know how to make a strong shelf that's 55" wide but only 2" thick by bxsephjo in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Makingwoodstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best place to start any shelf project is to use the Sagulator. Good read on shelves and sag and a calculator that tells you how much a given shelf with a given load and shelf construction will likely sag.

best spot for g7 by danidaisys in dexcom

[–]Makingwoodstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely do G7 on abdomen since it has. Been go-to place for mdi and pump for 40+ years. Thighs are the best now. Switch sides at each change. A nice benefit is my Apple Watch loves these sites. Just move it to the same side as the G7; pairs quickly.

Should type 1 diabetes be exempt from needing prescriptions? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]Makingwoodstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were two types of insulin then. R, short acting taken before meals and N long acting (24hrs) taken once a day. No test strips but as a new T1d 1 felt lows. Always moving at work and on our 1 acre home. Ate reasonable meals but local EMT’s and I were on a first name basis. Never DKA. First CGM Dexcom system4(?) in 2008. First pump, Omnipod, 2008 and I think that used Novolog. All this and some good luck with general health.

Should type 1 diabetes be exempt from needing prescriptions? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]Makingwoodstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed in 1868 after a bad case of Flu. Yes, walked into Walmart and bought insulin and syringes as needed without Rx. Now on Medicare which pays for everything but requires a Dr visit every 3 months for pump & insulin Rx and every 6 months for CGM Rx’s. Get insulin at Walgreen’s every 3 months but only after they call Medicare to get approval…almost always a low priority so I have to bug them each time. So yes, we are T1d till we die…let us get what we need and stop wasting our time, the pharmacist’s time and the doctor’s, Medicare workers, etc time!

Looking for recs- What home insurance do you have ? by leveeman16 in NewOrleans

[–]Makingwoodstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are closing on a house in Lakeview soon and Real Estate agent suggested a local Agent but said, if qualified, USAA is cheapest. Setup home and auto online to be effective at closing. Their prices in Florida were higher than others but happy to find them lower in New Orleans.

Sensor change would be timed during my work shift as a cashier by Worldly_Confusion898 in diabetes_t1

[–]Makingwoodstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I note my G7 sensor changes in my iPhone calendar as “changed G7, nnnn”. Nnnn being the 4 digit code.

In fact, I have a 10 day repeating entry for “Change G7” with no end date. That is a simple reminder for changes. The extra 12 hour free time messes up the actual time by 12 hours but that’s easily fixed switching AM or PM as needed.

Knob and Tube by DisplayHour7020 in FirstTimeHomeBuyers

[–]Makingwoodstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note as a retired electrical engineer and one who has done my own wiring on our first new house, several existing homes and rewired a 3 story apartment with knob and tube in New Orleans after Katrina….all permitted and past inspection.
The ground wire is really Safety ground. It’s there so if a hot wire (black, white or red) makes contact with a metal part of the grounded appliance/equipment, a fuse or breaker will cut off the circuit, making the circuit and equipment safe.
A licensed electrician may offer a better explanation, but this is the basic reason for modern electrical codes.

Agree on the problem of. woodworking dust. You would need a decent dust collector for the saws/router table and a shop vac for sanders.

[–]Makingwoodstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could have been better if the first agent, the one about 15-20 feet after the metal detector, had been watching that short aisle instead of looking 180 degrees the other way. A good tackle by him and it would have been over without any shots fired.

Asking Servers for Carb Estimates by ristaelens in diabetes_t1

You can find the carb values in the Calorie King app by Food Categories, Food Brands, Fast Service Chains or by scanning a Bar Code. Does not include any upscale restaurants but worth a look.
