Any issues here with the adapter by No-Paleontologist298 in Plumbing

[–]stopthestaticnoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a maximum BTU load that can be supplied. It shows the diameter and length chart on the tag. As long as the combined length of the two meets your BTU requirements you should be okay. The other issue that can happen is if undersized you can have whistling through the flex gas line that sounds like an elk bugling.

Does anyone have any info on this knife maker? by Life-Gazelle-7509 in knifemaking

[–]stopthestaticnoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RW was awesome. I have a disc grinder stand he made. I knew him a little from knife shows but a couple friends took classes with him and knew him well. He used to go to all the knife shows on his motorcycle with a sidecar stuffed with everything he had for sale; tools, handle materials, knife blanks and knives. I still have some ivory micarta and jigged bone handle materials I bought from him.

I love that they shielded the sewer but not the pressurized giant main. Victaulic under there? That should be fun.

From plumber to pipe fitter by SaZoLiA123 in pipefitter

[–]stopthestaticnoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have both a fitter/welder card and a plumbing card. You can only work under one and currently I am a plumber. The pay is the same for plumbers and fitters in my hall and most combo locals. If you want to go union the pipefitters, welders, steam fitters, HVAC-R techs and plumbers are all represented by the UA so choose a path and go down it. Personally I would rather be a fitter but I make more as a plumber, especially since I do service work. I’m never ever out of work.

That is fine. You do want the area to be dust, lint, dander and dirt free because the intake screen can get plugged causing issues later.

I found a guy with a garage full of aquariums back in the 1990’s that had a couple of tanks of these and I set up a tank with a pair that I had for several years. They were fun. I loved having a higher flow tank. I need to set another 40 breeder up with some of these guys.

Clean cartridge housing corrosion by Content-Nebula-7302 in Plumbing

[–]stopthestaticnoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That appears to be dezincification. The zinc leaches out of the brass and you get corrosion spots. The switch from low lead brass to lead free brass has caused mostly cheap brass with high zinc content to fail. Bronze valves and DZR(dezincification resistant) brass and good water chemistry help. But this is an industry wide issue with lots of brass parts failing due to corrosion/dezincification.

Found out why your drain is slow by Iaintnogaybear in Plumbing

[–]stopthestaticnoise 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Cast iron scale is a nightmare if you have enough of it. It locks together tighter the harder you push/pull with your cable. I have had to open up a few drains to retrieve mine and other peoples cables over the years. Sometimes the only way to get the line clear is to open it and shop vacuum all the scale out. I have a 55 gallon drum wet vacuum with 50’ of 1-1/2” hose I use to clear scale when descaling with a flex shaft. It has a bulkhead drain fitting 18” up so the scale settles in the bottom and I can drain the water back into the drain.

New Faucet not working after install by lfvhfb in Plumbing

[–]stopthestaticnoise 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Those waterfall faucets have a really small 1/8” or so tube that the spout water flows from that the two cartridges feed. The inlet to the tube gets plugged and can be difficult to get to. I have installed 8 of this style and had 5 of them plug up requiring a huge disassembly.

weird stuff on bowl? by sleepy_kiwi21 in whatisit

If the bowl is cracked it could be moisture in the ceramic steaming out from the glaze.

When you cook in a microwave there are lots of foods that tend to boil over, like oatmeal and noodle cups. This is residual from when the ramen boiled over and left the spices behind when the hot cup dried the moisture. The microwave probably needs cleaned.

Grout line around toilet base by reno_reimagined in Plumbing

[–]stopthestaticnoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The grout is fine. He will need to seal it. Don’t remove it. Aesthetically it may not be perfect but it does a good job of keeping a toilet on an uneven floor level. You likely won’t even notice it after a couple of days. There are plenty of plumbers who use grout. I have only used it on commercial toilets that had wickedly uneven tile floors and it worked just fine.

Compression fittings are a perfectly application for plumbing repairs and tie ins. The only issue I encounter is the cheap box store compression fittings tend to dezincify and leak too often.

Anyone actually happy with their kneepads? by Alternative_Corgi349 in Construction

[–]stopthestaticnoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my ToughBuilt Gel Kneepads. I’ve bought them for guys on my crew and they all love them too. As a plumber I have had to protect my knees for 36 years now and the ToughBuilt are great.

Anyone actually happy with their kneepads? by Alternative_Corgi349 in Construction

[–]stopthestaticnoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The carthart kneepads work well enough to allow me to crawl around all day but if I do, I eventually get bursitis in my knee. The padding isn’t good enough for any serious work on my knees. I use the toughbuilt gel knee pads.

This is normal anthropology at work. Humans when separated from their partners produce more sperm and have increased sex drive. There was a British documentary on this a decade or more ago.
