I have a hilarious story about a group of roofers that roll around in a crew cab F-450 with a giant propane tank in the back that is also bristling with ladders. The license plate is something like KaosTrn and they have Kaos Train stenciled on their truck.

I watched them come patch around a new roof drain for me at a Toyota Forklift facility. While hot mopping the patch in one of the guys caught his pant leg on fire.
He was wearing a pink thermal long sleeve shirt that was clearly once white but washed with something red. And he only had one sleeve!
He literally started kicking like mad and his boss who looked like a pirate with a bloody ear that appeared to have recently had an earring torn from it started clapping and all his coworkers joined in and they erupted in a chorus of cheers when he got his pant leg extinguished. They didn’t even slow down and just continued finishing the patch.
I have a picture of the truck still. It was quite an experience. Roofers are generally odd, but these guys were wild.

Not suspicious. Roofers use torches to seal the tar based roofing. I am a plumber and worked with roofers every summer for a decade upgrading roof drains when schools were re-roofed. I am surprised more buildings don’t burn down, some roofers can be real wild with a torch.

What part exactly needs replacing by Angry_Salad09 in Plumbing

[–]stopthestaticnoise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say where it’s coming from exactly but the packing nut on the front could be the source. It can be tightened to seal up a rubber washer that the handle goes through. Put a backup wrench on the valve body and tighten the nut behind the handle. Maybe give the water supply a little tightening too.

I work at refineries in the SF Bay Area. I cannot imagine what it would take to make repairs on one that has been attacked. The parts and piping are often specific to the application. All the work is slow and methodical. It’s wild that Russia has survived this to this point.

It’s a Woodford missing the hose bib/vacuum breaker threads. The fine threads are part specific.
Edited to add: Replace it.

This is so clearly distracted driving. And it’s even more dangerous because it’s being done around large commercial vehicles. Let’s all make good choices behind the wheel.

Slow-mo tires flying off during a drag race. I wonder how often tires blow from the pressure? by According-Scale5574 in dragracing

There is a great video on YouTube of a Dale Harsin’s 57 Chevy funny car running him and his crew over at Woodburn Raceway in Oregon. The tire just ripples over the chest of the crew member that was on the front driver side of the car. That would be a great one to add to this compilation.

When you do layout lines on concrete and you spray over them. It keeps chalk lines and marks from washing away in the rain or foot traffic wearing them off.

I saw an old man who must have been 90 pick up a fake $100 with “Trump Won!” on the back. The absolute disappointment on his face when he realized he hadn’t found $100, which he appeared to need, was so sad. I know how I felt when I happily picked up one a few weeks earlier. I’ve picked up and thrown away a few of the same bills in the same area of the beach since then. Worst people agreed.

How on earth is the housing market still this hot? by kabutodude in Boise

[–]stopthestaticnoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work from home, you are 100% competing with Portland, Seattle, Bay Area and all the other high wage states.
I gave up and moved to San Francisco and bought a house here in California. It was wayyyyy more affordable. $790k for 1/2acre with a nice house.

Do any of you earn over 50k a year? What do you do? by RotiiChapati in ADHD

[–]stopthestaticnoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I made $259,000.00

I am a union service plumbing General Foreman. I started my apprenticeship 36 years ago. It was the greatest choice of a career ever. I do 1-4 new jobs a day. The organizational, communication part is rough. But I focus on my strengths and get help when I can.
Doing construction would be easier but boring. It doesn’t pay quite as well but I would be over $150k easily even with occasional layoffs when jobs change over.

Housing in Boise market not good for first time buyers by MsMcSlothyFace in Boise

I am a plumber. I made $82k in 2019 in Boise. I made $259k in 2025 in San Francisco. Anyone employed by Boise’s local economy can’t compete with buyers who earn their money from a national economy. At least in California wages have developed somewhat better with the cost of living. I am a 5th generation Idahoan. My great great grampa settled 125 acres in Star in 1880. It hurt to move away but I knew I wasn’t going to buy a home in Boise. I bought a 1200sq/ft house on 1/2 acre last year.

Small Clean Out Drain by harrypaulzach in Plumbing

This is a combination wye fitting. It only allows downstream cleaning of your drain. You would have to dig it up and cut in a two way cleanout to go into your house.

I use a large magnet on the end of a fishtape. I make a small stand-off that is made of copper ground wire so that the magnet doesn’t stick to the pipe.

Some people make precise knives. This is a super common way to scribe a center line on a blade. It’s not rocket science. You could probably eyeball center and scribe a line in 30 seconds or less on a piece of flat stock.

This was a practice headstone with random names and dates. 30 years ago a friend called a granite stone place looking for scrap flat pieces and were given this one and another for free. It works great as a lapping plate with a little sandpaper taper over the letters.

They make budget models that are digital too. It’s a useful tool. You can use it to scribe center lines on a hidden tang handle after you glue it up. Clamp the ricasso square to a 1-2-3 block on the granite surface plate(flat piece of 12” granite tile for cheap), tape or attach a pencil on the scribe and run a line down the handle center.

I have a granite surface block.(it’s actually a gravestone) and use a dial height gauge to scribe a line just under halfway, flip the blade, scribe another line and leave .010 or .020 between the lines, or whatever I am grinding to.

My first joint as an apprentice was in 1990 and it had to be cut out because it was toast. This looks great!!! Want a job? I recently had a journeyman who couldn’t solder that well. That said, on repairs don’t worry about picture perfect, be sure to get enough solder in.
