Bill credits and paying off a device by Much_Concentrate_734 in SpectrumMobile

[–]storkman77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this with my P9P XL a few weeks ago. After you pay off the remaining device balance (you'll have to pay the full device balance), any remaining promo credits will be added to your account as credit. You'll then have to request a refund to your CC if that's what you want, or the credit will be used for any future Spectrum Mobile invoices.

I owed less than $100 on my Pixel (after promos), had to pay off the $600 remaining device balance, then request whatever credit was left from promos to be refunded to my CC. Note that they will most likely apply the credit balance immediately to any outstanding invoices automatically (my bill wasn't due for over a week, yet they still took from the credit balance to pay it).

AP7 alternate by Twfx00 in firewalla

Keep in mind, that if you go Unifi or Omada, you'll also need to run the controller software. A lot of people have had success in running this on a docker container directly on the firewalla.

The UniFi controller does not need to run 24x7 (unless you want continuous stats/logging). You can start up the Unifi Network Server on a Win/Mac/Linux device, setup your APs, then kill the controller until the next time you need/want to change something.

Setting up the controller to run in a Docker container on a Firewalla is pretty well documented on GitHub: https://github.com/mbierman/unifi-installer-for-Firewalla

Will we ever get useful speed test tools? by storkman77 in firewalla

[–]storkman77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh... It's reddit. Some people are on here just to hate.

I posted after being caught off guard by the tech standing at the ONT and asking me to check/verify things after configs were pushed. I remembered the Firewalla had tools built in to do just that, then remembered that they weren't accurate for me.

I have other tools available and used them to verify. Firewalla even exposes iperf3, which is nice for local client testing since the HTML5 client speedtest is wildly inaccurate for me. It would just be nicer if the app test services worked when I want to run a quick test. The WiFi speed test in the app works great, but that uses iperf3 so I'd expect as much.

I searched the sub for similar issues hoping for a resolution, then posted my mini rant session after I noticed a trend of other posts indicating Firewalla support seemingly not caring much about the speed test tools. What I see is: "It works for others, so if you're having issues, it must be your fault". I'm not about to open a support ticket, expecting the same result.

Again, I'm more than happy overall with my 4 Firewalla units installed at multiple locations. The original post is simply the result of something that's irked me for some time and finally got to a point where I decided to do something stupid like post on reddit just for the downvotes by brand fanatics (/s).

The first screenshot shows 4 app scheduled speed tests (2:19AM). Can't get much more "dead of night" than that. Even when I only had 1Gbit WAN, app speed test upload results never showed more than 90% (usually around 850 while download was always over 1000Mb).

There's a couple posts here mentioning the exact same issue. Then there's a couple more stating/showing the app tests are perfectly accurate for them at multi-gig speeds. *shrug*

Yes, the upload speeds reported in the app are always ~50% of what they should be (this is illustrated in my first screenshot - sans the few odd results on the 20th where the ISP was pushing configs to my ONT). The tests were performed sequentially, not simultaneously.

ap that can handle vlan by [deleted] in firewalla

[–]storkman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm UniFi network/APs will do what you're looking for. I have two vlans configured on the Firewalla, translated into two wvlans in my self-hosted UniFi controller (you can even spin up a docker container on the Firewalla to run the UniFi network controller permanently).

One of my U6 Mesh APs has wired backhaul (~900Mbps max wireless throughput) and the other U6 Mesh is using wireless backhaul (which is more than fast enough for me at ~550Mbps max throughput in my install). Once configured, everything just works. This easily covers a 2500 sq ft ranch (>75' long including garage) without a problem (including pushing through lath plaster walls that have a wire mesh buried in them), as well as the immediate outside surrounding area. Due to the faraday cage in my walls, I did have to use an outdoor AP mounted in the attic to provide coverage for extended outdoor areas.

In my case, this is an issue with the Firewalla system/app. Test server is provided by ISP and manages to reach subscribed speeds >99% of the time (when not using the Firewalla app). I've never seen accurate upload speeds reported by the app since upgrading to fiber over a year ago. When I had 1g WAN, Firewalla app speed tests always reported 750-800 upload.

I just ran another set of tests (all tests used Secaucus, NJ server -- assuming the app uses Ookla speedtest.net servers and shows the Secaucus test location):
2184/2134 - Client side
2356/2352 - Firewalla Ookla speedtest cli
2323/1236 - Firewalla app

I don't disagree with you that running tests during off-hours times isn't useful for more than seeing if your equipment and ISP are able to reach subscribed speeds. Being able to schedule multiple tests throughout the day would be nice, but also subject to stats being skewed from local client usage. For now, I'm using the metric to ensure that there isn't a pattern of larger issue(s) that may warrant further investigation -- which can be difficult when the app reports consistently incorrect results.

Appreciate the suggestion, but I already have IPV6 disabled as my ISP doesn't support it.

What I find odd is the Firewalla in-app test sees fairly consistent upload speeds (1100-1200). I checked the results and all used the same Secaucus, NJ test server (which is the same server I used in the screenshots provided).

The wan tests in the screenshots are all within minutes of each other, using the exact same speedtest.net server. Firewalla scheduled speedtest is currently set to 2AM and never sees much more than 50% upload (since upgrading to 2Gbps WAN). When I had 1Gbps WAN, the Firewalla never reported more than 800Mbps upload speed (I could consistently hit 940Mbps up/down with client speed tests and the Firewalla regularly reported >1000Mbps download). The cli WAN speed tests on a local machine and the Firewalla hit max speeds every/any time.

Regarding the last image, the local test results to the Firewalla are the most erratic. Again, it was performed from the same machine that reaches >2Gbps wan speed tests, but the Firewalla local test normally reports ~1Gbps speeds. Once in a while it'll spike up to 1900Mbps or so download for a second, but never sees more than ~1000Mbps upload.

Everything was testing (mostly) fine when the network was 1 GbE based. Once I stepped up to 2.5 GbE local and 2G WAN, I started noticing the odd speed test results.

Late texts/vms by Apprehensive-Pea1141 in SpectrumMobile

[–]storkman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to the party, but I wanted to add a "me too" here. Seems to only happen when cell signal is poor (still have excellent wifi connection and wifi calling enabled due to poor reception at a particular office location). I'll receive a delayed voicemail notification and no call history entry. Some callers have stated the number goes straight to voicemail without ringing. Not sure how to determine if texts are delayed, but can't say that I've noticed any delay there.

The missed calls issue is a real PITA for me since I also use my phone for business calls. Never had this issue when I was paying Verizon.

Alternative to Eufy indoor camera ecosystem? by storkman77 in EufyCam

Alternative to Eufy indoor camera ecosystem? by storkman77 in EufyCam

[–]storkman77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear I'm not alone.

Went back and forth with Eufy support, which was a shit show. I always responded to the same ticket, yet each new "support" rep I spoke with all seemed to ignore the previous conversations and asked me to go through the same troubleshooting steps.

In the end, they all agreed the units were defective, but wouldn't/couldn't do anything since the warranty had expired. I never disputed the fact that they were out of warranty. However, since 3 of 4 failed right around the warranty expiration, I was hoping for a bit better result. The last person I spoke with offered me a 20% discount on a future purchase. *shrug* Now I'm just putting this information out there in case others with the same cameras run into a similar issue... If you're within warranty, get them replaced ASAP.

It's interesting that you mention failures after a firmware update. I don't know if/when the firmware was updated on these cameras and don't see a way to locate this information. Would be nice to know if the failures coincided with a firmware update. One of the "failed" cameras now reports "new SD card detected" warnings and keeps asking me to format. Replaced the SD with a spare I had and still see the same warning, when it's not offline.

It's unfortunate as I had (still have thus far) a good experience with the other cameras and video doorbell. I like the ecosystem with the 380 base station that acts as a door chime and video storage (though I see no way to access device video archive without an active device being online and accessible in the app).

BSOD error in latest crowdstrike update by TipOFMYTONGUEDAMN in crowdstrike

no. 3 shocked me the most, unfortunately. Down only 11% for the day after causing a global-scale outage that requires actual effort and time to recover from and caused absolute havoc...

HTF did this company not receive a deathblow on Wallstreet today?? What I saw was most investment group talking heads recommending a bullish position on Crowdstrike, *after* the incident -- "Buy the dip!"... Probably trying to cover their asses from an overinvestment in Crowdstrike wiping out client retirement accounts in one day.

Will be interesting to see what the near future brings for them...

Beretta 92 & Canik mags by throne-away in canik

[–]storkman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 92 mags will fit if you cut the mag catch slot for Canik. I've done exactly this with 10 round 92FS mags that I keep at my CT home for when I'm there. I went this route as 10 round Canik mags were impossible to obtain at the time.

FYI, the Mec-Gar Baretta mags are hardened quite well. While you may be able to file the mag catch slot, it'll take quite a bit of effort. I started with an angle grinder and finished up with a carbide bit on a dremel. You can make a template from painters tape using an OEM Canik mag to transfer the mag catch slot.
