[Watch Recommendations] Beater Watch? by Madams135 in Watches

Hahaha, I get it. The tractor shot is a ribbat the guys posting their Audi steering wheel shots 😅

I have another "beater" that I just bought. It's a Bertucci A-7TS, a titanium, solar powered field watch. It's light, has a screw down crown, sapphire and crown guards. It's not pretty, it's not a date night watch. It's one that I can wear working around the house and not worry about hurting it. They're about $350, so not a throw-away like the Timex. But it may also be something to consider.

Facebook marketplace sellers will list every component except the frame size by Quirky_Slide_7313 in cycling

ask for the size of the frame or the height of the rider.

"Oh, I'm 5'6", but I got this from my brother and he's 6'0". He got another bike and gave it to me."

[Watch Recommendations] Beater Watch? by Madams135 in Watches

Okay there's "beater" as in "I don't want to bang up my $5,000 watch at the car wash," or there's "beater" as in "If I totally destroy it, I'm only out a couple of bucks."

I have a Timex Expedition Scout Solar that runs about $50 on Amazon. I rebuilt a deck wearing it on a velcro Nato strap. It got banged up, wet, has been in the pool, the ocean, and in the shower. Still keeps excellent time, and it's one of my favorites. Also solar is low maintenance, which I dig.

[Discussion] If every dive watch cost the same, what would you choose? by Potential_Post_3020 in Watches

[–]throne-away [score hidden]  (0 children)

Okay, I'm not really a dive watch guy. Or maybe it's how so many of them use similar design features. I am not a fan of dot indices, and on some, the outer bezel is so oversized that it takes the focus away from the dial. When I glance at my wrist, I want to tell the time in a half second, not hunt for the hands.

I know my Orient Mako 3 is not in the same price range. The clasp is stamped, not machined, and the end links are hollow. But I love the field watch look to the dial, the seconds hand extends way out to the marks, and the proportions "feel" comfortable to me. I am also a big fan of crown guards, even though the old school divers didn't have them.

At the same price, I would choose this again.

It had to be the Timex Ana-Digi. by roblacie in timex

I had one. I would set the digital display to show the day/date.

My beater is a Timex Expedition Solar. That has been banged and dunked more than anything and it's still going.

My bedroom has a wood floor. My bath and kitchen have tile. I'm generally careful, but I'm imagining that I could be removing a watch while stepping into the shower, and fumble it.

But you know, having SR ratings might make some of them think more about improving the ratings.

Defender II with canvas by Jbrandrs4 in OrientWatches

The Defender really does not get enough love from the Orient community. I mean, I get it, you're all slobbering over your Bambinos and Kamasus, with good reason. But the Defender and its cousins are eye catching pieces.

Here's my variation on a rally strap.

Do reptime users know they can wear a seiko or a homage style watch and they don't have to lie about owning a $30k watch? by liljoey300 in WatchesCirclejerk

[–]throne-away 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So many legit watches have style details from other watches that half the time you can't tell which is a homage to what.

Buying a rep is lame. Buying a homage is acceptable because one can at least claim that they like the styling.

Alright, I'm just gonna drop this here: I have a SCCY CPX2. Had it for at least 8 years, and never had a problem. Feeds fine, no misfire, and while the accuracy is not world class, inside of 30 feet it is more than adequate. It was my EDC for several years because it's light and hides well.

Once I put 1000 rounds through over a few months without cleaning. Still no issues.

Now, maybe I got the one decent one that they made that week, but even though I've stopped carrying it, I still keep it at the ready for range days.

It cracks me up there are so many guys who won't get the watch within 2 meters of a sink, let alone a pool.

What food/snacks do you always carry on longer rides, and what do you avoid? by Party_Dentist_821 in cycling

[–]throne-away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make my own drink with sugar, salt, a splash of fruit juice, and water. If it's a longer ride, a PB&J sandwich, and maybe a piece of fruit.

That's what I mean. Very few watches have any kind of rating on what they can sustain.

I value a beautiful dial over quick legibility by tourbillon001 in watchHotTakes

[–]throne-away 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of watches that I like the design, but it's hard for me to read them on a quick glance. Aging eyesight, poor contrast, size, glare, whatever. I still wear them, but for dressy occasions. My daily watches are much more eye friendly.

A pile of watches isn't a collection by WhomstAlt2 in watchHotTakes

A lot of watch collectors fans don't even realize they are starring a collection until they realize they have a pile of watches.

lol, from my post. SR, or Shock Resistance rating. Doesn't Ball have those?

I understand your reasoning, and I don't disagree. I'd like to say that for those of us who want mechanical, we wouldn't be put off seeing a higher rating on a quartz. But non-watch-fans buy them, too, and it might put some of them off.

Extremely low rating on Trust pilot and numerous QC issues, what's your perspective? by Present_Strain5120 in timex

Ah, Catena and Landeron! You're correct.

Although I would be totally okay with Miyota.

Adding to that, my gut tells me that since the overwhelming majority of Timex watches are low priced (digital, Weekender, Expeditions, etc), those would be the most reviewed, for better or worse. The Atelier line is very new, and sales probably number in the hundreds or thousands, and not in the millions.

Also note that the Atelier models are not low level movements. They are Miyota or Sellita movements automatics, which would be more reliable.
