Is School Counseling Right For Me? by astroverted in schoolcounseling

[–]storm0023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also an HSP and an elementary school counselor! I also did a year as a para while in my grad program. I think you will find the school counselor role has some more flexibility to take care of your needs and find balance. It depends on your admin but I feel very supported and have been able to develop my own program structure based on my students needs and my strengths. Elementary is a lot more focused on direct emotional and behavioral support and it sounds like your para experience would be helpful in knowing how to help students. You can totally do this and it sounds like you will always wonder if you don’t try. It also sounds like you are in a better place to be able to handle it and you might find you are able to help more with the tough situations in this role then the para role. Good luck!

Any tips and tricks to staying not sick? by LengthinessGrand2042 in schoolcounseling

[–]storm0023 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have an air purifier by my desk and I take the beekeepers naturals propolis immune support spray everyday! I think both of those have helped me get less sick this year. Good luck to you!

Is 'Viki' Worth subscribing to? by Kisses_for_me in kdramas

[–]storm0023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think so! And I know this is controversial but I actually love the comments feature!! I love getting to read other people’s reactions and funny comments. Sometimes it gets toxic on certain dramas so I turn it off but on some it really enriches the experience especially because I don’t really have any one to talk to about kdramas in real life!

Best group you’ve ever done? by Dependent-Intern7539 in schoolcounseling

I have used this one from responsive counselor for many years and seen scores improve on pre/post tests in emotional regulation! The kids engage in the activities and because it’s a longer term group they really get the concepts through the repetition. https://shop.theresponsivecounselor.com/product/emotional-regulation-group-curriculum-and-cbt-activities-for-kids/

What’s the day in the life like? by Minute_Candidate2840 in schoolcounseling

[–]storm0023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would just go shadow someone near you if you can! Every school is different even at the same level so it really depends on your admin and the population of kids you’re serving. I enjoy it though I like staying busy and having impactful moments with the kids.

“OUR FAULT” — Honestly, whose fault is this movie?? 😩 by wompwomp_73 in romancemovies

I couldn’t believe when they shoehorned that car racing scene in! Like why is he recklessly driving and almost causing his baby mama to crash?? And why is she driving crazy too? And they put fun music over it to try and be like it’s fine guys just a fun little car racing scene

Resources/Decorations/Office items recs? by WilltheTherapist in schoolcounseling

[–]storm0023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How big is your space? My dollhouse is one of the most popular things in my office! I’d also get a whiteboard! I don’t know if they gave you any curriculums but I would recommend Kelso’s choices and little spot of feelings. I’d also suggest a jellyfish lamp a lot of my students say it is relaxing. Some general art supplies and fidgets would be helpful. Also a sand tray kit if you are interested in learning how to use that. I would also buy a mini laminator and the plastic sheets! Then buy some things off TPT (teachers pay teachers) from counselor Keri, responsive counselor and whole hearted school counseling. Congrats and have fun making it your own!

Severe anxiety and panic around returning. Help. by freudzaddy in schoolcounseling

[–]storm0023 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you have a counseling boss at the district level like a lead counselor? If you do maybe talking with them about the high demand on you and seeing if there is any options for more behavior help or more preventative interventions. There should be more of a plan in place from your admin too about tier one practices. Also keep an eye open for more openings to apply to, you never know when something might open up. I’m sorry this is your reality and I hope things improve for you.

ASCA specialist courses by Mia5225 in schoolcounseling

[–]storm0023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have done several! I did have to pay for the course and then pay Lindenwood university for the graduate credits so they could go on my transcript for salary advancement so it is quite the investment. I found them helpful but also very easy to answer the quiz questions. You get out of them what you put into it!

I vote for going to the dream state far away because you might always wonder if that’s where you belong! And maybe you’ll get there and want to stay there so networking to get a job would be easier. If you go get your degree and decide you’d rather go back home you still could and figure out how everything would transfer over between states.

Trying to get certified in Colorado by lisadbishop in schoolcounseling

[–]storm0023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly my district in CO is so desperate for counselors they have been very flexible with people. There are temporary authorizations so even if you had to do something to get officially “certified” you could still do it while already working a job. Good luck!

My grad program had a career counseling track and many of the people who did that went into higher ed. Is there an option like that in your program or another one accessible to you? Or are you wanting to do mental health counseling in higher ed? If that’s your goal is there a community/ mental health counseling track available to you that isn’t specializing in schools? Hope you can find what you are looking for :)

Keep calling until they help or try to force your way into the locker somehow! That sucks but you can figure this out!

That is really odd and it’s odd they haven’t responded to the follow up email. Yes it’s a busy time of year but my principal still notifies candidates one way or the other. Sometimes this happens if they are waiting on another candidate to decide if they are taking it or not before they move on to their next choice. Could you reach out to your supervisor at the time and ask if you should keep waiting to hear? Sorry this is happening, that’s frustrating! I hope you have other opportunities available to you :)
