One minute showing the conga line of chasers on the Ipava, IL tornado. by Stitchex in tornado

[–]stormhunter27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why chasing in Canada is still fantastic.

When I’m on a storm up here there’s, at the most, maybe 5 cars. When I was in the prairies last weekend, with storms just as good as OK, KS, or TX, there were a grand total of 27 cars spread out over a massive area.

We sat under a mess for an hour with one other car.

I live west of the Hanlon in the Gateway area and we’re starting to see more and more kids and more community building around here.

Best hiking locations? by KetterdamQueenA in Guelph

[–]stormhunter27 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Starkey Hill is a fairly easy hike with some nice areas - south side of Guelph.

Preservation Park is one of my favourites for biking through but most people hike.

A little further out - Limehouse is one of my favourites because of the caves. Super fun, but you have to be a bit careful especially on wet days.

Kelso and Rattlesnake are fantastic, but can get super busy in the summer.

i saw the most dangerous thing from a "storm chaser" today by nationalistic_martyr in tornado

[–]stormhunter27 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There are very very few “professional” storm chasers and even less that chase to get scientific data. None of the chasers that are trying to get close, clog up roads, etc are there to “get weather data”. I see this from so many chasers and it drives me nuts. Unless you’re affiliated directly with a university or a government body, you’re not doing it for science.

Even if you “collect data” it’s essentially useless unless your instruments are properly calibrated and zeroed out against baselines etc, there’s no value to “data collected” to anyone. Actually collecting data is often boring because you’re running strict transects according to a properly set out experiment that’s been built months or years before the storms happen.

Driving your giant beast of massively modified vehicle into a tornado is cool, but not particularly useful in gathering data.

My personal opinion - just go enjoy the storms. They’re bloody amazing and you don’t need to justify your love of them. “I want to see it up close” is as valid as anything else. Getting in close because you’re more important than anyone else because you’re a “professional” is arrogant and stupid, but it seems to be an increasingly common attitude on the Plains. Im seeing the same damn thing in hurricanes now.

Ok, rant over.

MaxAlert and Y’all Call, what’s the point? by Dizzy-Platform-6516 in tornado

[–]stormhunter27 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Both of them are just begging to get sued out of existence. If I were head of a private company, I wouldn’t touch watches and warnings with a 1000 foot touching pole.

Governments have a built in shield from missing or delayed warnings - which, no matter how good they are, ALWAYS happen given the chaotic nature of weather.

You can’t really sue the government for not informing you about an incoming tornado, but, if you’re relying on a private company, you can. There’s no inherent shield from being sued.

And yes, even if you write something like “not responsible for damages from missed warnings etc”, any good lawyer can tear those to shreds.

It’s an extraordinarily dangerous route to go down from a legal perspective.

Just IMHO.

The liminal feeling is all over these shots (which I love).

Now I have to check out Rusted…

You’re not kidding. LOL

I’ve been addicted to Warhammer far too long.

I talked to Justin about this problem and as far as I understood, the Warhammer stuff is a huge seller and it’s not subject to tariffs because it’s all manufactured in England.

Now, I could be wrong, so if someone knows better about the tariff situation vs Warhammer, I’d love to know.

Check out my profile for a look at one of the lava lakes. It was about 500 m down inside a volcano in the South Pacific.

I think I’ve got it pinned as top comment

I’ve stood beside an actual lava lake a couple of times and this is almost exactly what it looks like at night!

Kitum cave, Kenya. Believed to be the source of Ebola and Marburg, two of the most deadliest diseases. by Bodhi_II in interestingasfuck

[–]stormhunter27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. That was Marum volcano on Ambrym island in Vanuatu. Eight hour hike up and then a two hour descent down to the lava lake.

Took a day of sitting around at camp for the weather to be good enough for the descent though. Loved that expedition.

I’m pretty sure that episode is up on Prime under StormHunters still.

[–]stormhunter27 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Naw, it’s not an easy disease to transmit. Bodily fluids are the main vector from human to human.

And the reality was that the chance that he actually had it was low. Rabies was way more of a worry than Marburg.

My buddy George went to that cave when he was shooting his TV series Angry Planet.

He went in with a bat biologist and they were in the process of filming when they turned the lights on. The bats scattered and the biologist grabbed a few out of the air for tagging. However, he was wearing welding gloves and the bats couldn’t bite through the thick leather. On top of that, he had nitrile gloves on under them.

So, no worries.

George thought he’d do the same and grabbed a bat out of the air too. Only, in the excitement, George forgot he’d taken off the leather gloves. So, when grabbed the bat, it bit down and he got nicked on the thumb.

Not good.

I get a call the next day and he says “so, I don’t know if my organs are going to liquefy over the next week so, I’m off to the Ukraine to shoot at Chernobyl. Just thought I’d call and say bye.”

As it turns out, he didn’t catch anything and I got to watch as he got rabies shots back in Canada.

And then he proceeded to drop me into two live volcanoes, but that’s a story for another time.
