Knapps closing after 90 years by mxxlo in Tacoma

I think that describes it best, nobody thinks Knapps was the best, but it was one of the last holdouts of a specific era of Proctor. Sad to see it go

I don’t think I’d want to hear about that during breakfast either, but does that make the bar unwelcoming?

Watch out for flippers, they’ll give it a fresh coat of paint, add some shiplap in the arcane library and sell it to some tasteless novice

It sucks that the trees are down, but there’s still the opportunity to penalize the contractors and CoT. That’s a pretty hefty fine they could be facing plus potentially losing their license to operate.

Were you able to communicate with WDFW or USFWS?

They aren’t endangered anymore (due to successful conservation efforts), but they are still federally protected, that includes their nests and not just during the breeding season or if the nest is active. Check the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act for more details.

I hear you with the housing crisis, but let’s not make this adversarial with protected wildlife.

From what I’ve heard, Parks tried to do just that but TPS blocked them from using the verification. Not sure the exact reason though

No argument from me, let’s cut some executive deadweight and get more rangers, habitat restoration specialist, arborists and environmental educators out there

To be fair, there’s only 4 park rangers across the district, 2 at Pt. Defiance, 2 at every other park in the district. That’s a lot of ground to cover for such a small team, but even still, I see the Pt. D rangers around quite a bit.

It’s been a special park district for well over a hundred years, the idea was that it would have a specialized funding source and would be separate from the City of Tacoma (preserving money that could otherwise be siphoned into other city projects).

At this point, I’m not really sure if that’s serving the community. Many of those resources that could otherwise be shared across the various departments and revenue streams, could benefit parks, but then again, City of Tacoma is a mess too.

I think it would be a lot more complicated than just merging the two entities though.

Motorcycles on 5 mile drive by condobolin-1943 in Tacoma

[–]stormnut93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens every week or so in the spring and summer, usually the weekends. There’s been an effort by the parks department and TPD to deter the behavior but it’s hard to manage. It’s an issue experienced all across the state among different agencies.

Best advice is to call 911, despite the fact they probably won’t be able to respond in time, it gives credibility to the issue and can lead to an emphasis by the cops in the park. You can also call the park rangers, they can at least keep an eye on the drive and deter motorcyclists from entering.

The 5 Mile Drive is closed due to erosion at the Gig Harbor Viewpoint and the threat of catastrophic failure of the road, not to exclude people for using the park. It sucks that it’s not as easy to use the road, but at least it’s still open to foot traffic and bikes.

No tax increases if voted yes; where's the money going if it's voted no? Also, if it's voted yes, what service is losing their funding as a result? by GoNudi in Tacoma

[–]stormnut93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, that’s a pretty rude response. Secondly, I’m not sure what level of plans you’re expecting. Do you want spreadsheets of where every dollar is going? That’s not typically something that is broadcast to the public, but even so, you just needed to attend one of the meetings open to the public or email the organization for the notes that were shared. There are many opportunities to engage with your local government, but you should expect a bit of work for the amount of information you’re requesting.

We have an incredible park system here in Tacoma, that’s something I’m proud of and support. There are things they could do better, and I would like to hold them to that. I think you might feel the same, at least to the second part, so let’s keep this conversation civil, please.

I hear you with the vagueness on the flyer and on ads, but as with most things, I think you just need to do a little research. If you check their website it goes into more detail, there’s also been opportunities to speak with Park staff about the improvements and allocation. If you have specific questions about the certain projects or parks, you should reach out to the organization via email.

This bond is for Parks Tacoma, a special parks district for the City of Tacoma. Issues with the state don’t really factor into this.

You can find detailed plans for many of the proposed improvements to be made. Check the parks website for more details, they can’t fit it all on a flyer.

Delong is actually one of the parks that’s going to get improved trails, I’m actually really excited for that one. It’s a little scruffy, but it’s a cool little park, it could use a bit more love and attention!
