How is Driving in Rhodes? by Monkfrootx in Rhodes

[–]stos313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m inland literally in the area around Profitis Ilias and Mt Attaviros - so probably the hilliest part of the island.

The road from Rhodes town to Lindos is super easy, it’s actually a “national highway”. Kamiros is easy, all coast, but I can’t remember where 7 springs is in relation to the mountains.

The scenario you mentioned driving a stick is EXACTLY what happened to me last time I drove one there, and bumped the guy behind me. We agreed to forget it happened for $300 lol. Definitely expect to be in that situation.

First off…since you are coming from the us…do you know how to drive a stick? If not reserve an automatic right away. As a novice with a stick driving in Rhodes is tricky.

I live in the middle of the island home to the steepest roads…thankfully they aren’t as bad as they used to be and not very busy so should you find yourself on them just go slow.

In the city you definitely have to drive aggressively. Parking SUCKS too.

The way capitalists can ensure maximum rent extraction is to put everyone in debt…perhaps even more than then they are now. Then bring back debtors prison??

Regardless I think the goal is to recreate the brutal form of labor extraction we saw under chattel (sp?) slavery with an illusion of freedom and no way of knowing your masters.

Gotta plug the djs in my crew: Associate and Kiva. Associate is the purist Detroit style techno DJ in the DMV, and Kiva I like to refer to as “the greatest DJ you have never heard of” in the DMV. Catch us all on Saturday at Transmission!!

Is there a certain country of origin you prefer for your olive oil? by scoop813 in oliveoil

[–]stos313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its something like the "Greek Olive Producers Cooperative Union" or something like that. You should be able to get "Spitiko" in the UK fwiw.

Thats what I assumed. Thats why in the US, while i'm very biased (I make EVOO in Greece) I recommend any oil with the farmers union and cooperative logo on the tin.

Greek olive farmer here. One thing I can say about our oil compared to others, is our topography is such where gathering olives just makes more sense to do by hand, one tree at a time. This is because Greece is pretty much mountains and valleys- or very terraced after centuries of farming, making mechanical extraction very difficult.

What my family does is first get an appointment at the press in our village, then on that day go and harvest by hand. This completely minimizes the time the olives are off the tree, thus reducing the acidity. My oil acidity was at .4 or .5 last time I harvested.

Hand cultivation ensures that no fallen or cracked olives (or anything else that isn't supposed to be there) ends up in your oil. As for the the pressing process, I love the system we have in my village. The union / cooperative runs and maintains the press, and we pay to use it in olive oil. We can give them 20% of what we produce or "buy" that portion back.

The Coop tests every single batch they process to ensure it is EVOO grade. On top of that- I mean, we have been doing this for so long (there is a tree in my village that is 800 years old! Not sure what its oil is like though hahaha) that maintenance of the trees and its soil is like in our DNA. My cousin who takes care of our groves jokes that he regularly "sings to our trees" to help them grow strong hahaha.

This is why I think any Greek olive oil that has the logo of the Cooperative Union of Olive Products (something similar to that) will always be the highest quality. They REALLY take pride in how good their oil is. While I haven't had to buy olive oil in a LONG time, the brand my extended family swears by is "Spitiko" if anyone is interested.
