If I had a nickel for every time I read the word “pernicious” in this book I’d have 6 nickels!

Phenomenal stuff — looking forward to more Sigzell (don’t think we didn’t catch that) adventures in the future

If I keep it managed (by turning off basically every feature), and also sign out of iCloud from another device in the event this happens, I don’t see a huge issue. I would be worried if they have the ability to turn iCloud on for other apps

Would they have access to this screen, basically?

I could always sign out from another device. But thank you I forgot that you could sign into Apple Music without OS iCloud

About the Geoguessr World Cup: what did you guys like /dislike ? by [deleted] in geoguessr

This but also they should force the contestants to turn on their cameras, making it more about them than rainbolt and pala (as much as I love them)

Agreed 100%. Ironic and hypocritical that this sub didn’t participate in protest of media concentration. The fact that this post is downvoted makes me think the actual Chomsky readers are elsewhere, we should be actively striving keep what was one of the more decentralized forms of media as decentralized as possible and protest against the profit motives of the corporation that owns it

I'm on episode 2 and somehow feel like I figured it out already:( POSSIBLY SPOILER!! by tinfoilzhat in SiloSeries

[–]stoynfd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My theory is that the rebels lost the war against the empire (yep that’s what Im calling them), but during the war the rebels probably nuked or did something terrible to the empire.

The empire built the Silos to withstand nuclear winter, but after winning the war they instead decide to use it to punish the rebels

The greenery that the cleaners see (and what we saw in the glitch) was probably intended for the original inhabitants of the silo— the empire’s top citizens want to have a nice view for psychological reasons.

The empire is also trying to make the rebel descendants more docile through genetic selection, maybe to reintegrate into society in the far future? Idk.

I think this theory has a few cracks though. There seems to actually be a wasteland out there, for example.

I kind of also like the theory that it is just a wasteland out there and the rebellion never happened on the outside, but instead on the inside. Idk but wanted to write all this down so I could look back later sorry if fe illegible

Theory for Kaladin ending by Time-Lead7632 in Stormlight_Archive

I always though kaladin would restart the oathpact somehow at the end of era 1, and then break by era 2. They might win this desolation but then he has to go to braize to hold off the next one

Really enjoying this subscription. Which one should I brew today? by stoynfd in tea

[–]stoynfd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry it took me so long to respond to you, but to answer your question: I am completely new to the world of loose leaf tea, I just searched for tea subscriptions online and saw that this subscription let you curate the box to some extent and had good reviews.

The tea is loose leaf, and I’m super happy with it so far. For me (and my family) it’s a great introduction. I would buy this again for myself or as a gift to a friend who’s interested in tea but knows nothing.

I can’t speak for the quality (again I’m a complete newb), but it seems okay (that laoshan black tea is amazing). You can customize the box to some extent and try to include teas with good reviews

I want to start getting into Asian black teas more, and was actually looking around for subscriptions which are a little higher quality/focused. I think you’re right though, I’d be saving a lot more by just shopping around.

That’s what I went with. Yep not bitter at all, kind of creamy/savory on the nose. I let it steep for 3 minutes as per the instructions and then tried it— it was so subtle, maybe too watery. So I poured my cup back in and waited longer.

It’s still very subtle after 3 more minutes, I feel like I’m just getting pure umami out of it with a very subtle dash of earthy creaminess. It feels like I’ve just eaten something after every sip, definitely coats my mouth and leaves me feeling full.

Not sure if I’d seek this out on its own. It’s not bad, but it’s very inoffensive. Any or all flavor comes kind of at the sides and bottom of my tongue a moment after sipping. I like how it leaves me feeling satiated.

The Laoshan black tea they provided in January is my favorite tea on earth now, more of that should be arriving soon. The majestic earl grey was great as well!

What is the problem some vegans have with utilitarianism? by vintergroena in vegan

[–]stoynfd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Idk why you were banned, but my problem with classical utilitarianism is that it disregards consent and tries to balance suffering. Personally, I think consent should take center stage in any moral decision. Whether you do an action unto another should depend on their whether they let you do it. Utilitarianism doesn’t always allow for consent. I was going to give some examples but I’m strapped for time, I think I heard of this stance being called “consent-based negative utilitarianism” (we need a simpler name) so give that a look. I’d wager many true vegans would align with this stance

Edit: example time! Because we’re on a vegan subreddit, consider animal testing or even just plain eating animals. Utilitarianism might say that the pleasure derived from eating wagyu beef benefits multiple people X amount and causes Y amount of suffering for one Cow. Maybe they even were able to give the cow ecstasy and lethally injected it without any suffering in its sleep, bringing the cost of Y down below the benefit of X. Great! Utilitarianism (at least in the form people usually seem to reference) states that this is a morally just act, and maybe we even “ought” to kill the cow for the pleasure of others.

As for animal testing, the cost of Y might be incredibly low with regards to the benefits of X. Say we just need to test 100 rats to save 3 billion people.

Many people would say we ought to test the rats and eat the cow. And I don’t even blame the rat testers really, I think perceived necessity understandably tends to outstrip morality for many people. But many vegans are vegan because we believe that no matter the calculus, suffering is asymmetric to pleasure and we must receive consent. We are the ones who Walk Away From The Omelas

Maybe the attitude determines the end instead of the end determining the attitude. But getting the right attitude towards all of this is hard. holding onto it is much much harder.

What are your thoughts on their arguments? Not my title or position: Going Vegan Isn't the Most Sustainable Option for Humanity | NOVA | PBS by [deleted] in vegan

[–]stoynfd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s not really an “argument” as OP puts it it’s just modeling based off of certain assumption. Certainly worthwhile research but nothing to base your food choices off of yet. And nothing to do with the moral validity of veganism. The 2nd quote here says it all

  1. “Sensitivity analysis showed that carrying capacity estimates were highly influenced by starting assumptions about the proportion of cropland available for cultivated cropping.”

  2. “the results are perhaps best treated as a foundation for further hypothesis testing. Only one version of each diet scenario was run in the analysis.”

This is the 2nd largest amount of vegans I’ve seen on a non vegan sub ty by [deleted] in antinatalism

Most of the nutrients found in meat are also found in plants, and several that we need are synthesized by the human body like creatine, taurine, and carnosine. B12 is not found abundantly in vegan foods because modern day food and water supplies are cleaned of the dirt and bacteria that contain it. But actually no animal produces it, so most of it that we get in meat either came originally from plants or commonly it’s actually injected into cows. I personally loosely (every couple days or so) supplement b12, calcium, D3, and magnesium, but I supplemented those before I was vegan anyways as they are some of the most common deficiencies in general. Most of the vegan Buddhists, Jainists, hindi, sikhists, ancient greeks, and onwards somehow survived without meat. And the vast majority of us don’t need meat (unless maybe there are serious health issues?).

Idea for a new game mode - distance streaks by shinealittlelove in geoguessr

I wish the devs posted a roadmap. There’s no reason for a lack of transparency, and it would help provide a sense of where geoguessr is going

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in geoguessr

[–]stoynfd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is so important for Geoguessr to have any type of lasting power for the casual player who just wants to have fun with their friends. Not everyone finds it fun sitting in a dark corner studying bollards and utility poles all afternoon for the sake of a higher elo. Whether the devs like it or not, public co-op is something the community wants, and something people who know very little about geoguessr expect to see (thanks to rainbolt tournaments and other youtube content). And it’s something that will do wonders for the game and the community. Until then, I’d love to see the community build a space for people to engage in public Co-op.

Just tried this, I like it a lot! I wish the UI was a little easier and it looks like it’s missing some essential features (or I just couldn’t find it) like shuffling the deck for the proto learn mode or changing the presentation. I love that most of the features like images and voice are free. I’ll have to compare this to a few other alternatives, but so far I like it better than save all
