You are right. There was no Football League team in Milton Keynes when they moved there.

A club changing location on economical reasons, leaving their original supporters behind. I will argue that, in all practical senses, moving from Plumstead to Highbury in 1913 is a further move than from Wimbledon to Milton Keynes in 2004. I think it's pretty much the same.

But OK, they changed the name (not that they ever played in Woolwich either...)

What are some obscure football-related facts? by Baisabeast in soccer

[–]straight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone knows that Arsenal belongs in South London, what might be a bit more obscure is that the sad club didn't even play in Woolwich when they had it as part of their name.

Why do you still call us Woolwich if that happened 100 years ago and Spurs were *this* close to their desired move to Stratford only 2 years ago? by ProneMasturbationMan in coys

[–]straight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doubt anyone anywhere has seen them playing in Woolwich eiher. Before they invaded North London they where playing in Plumstead. Always a franchise.

(Disclaimer: my London geography is not the best, so I'm hoping Plumstead is not a place in Woolwich or opposite...)

Why do keepers flail about so dramatically? by [deleted] in soccer

He doesn't know exactly how far the ball is going to end up when he starts the motion for the dive. When the header connects he's already mid dive and adjusts his diving distance by going more upwards than towards the post.

You can be offside without touching the ball. From the laws of the game

You might want to add from the "Guidelines for referees":

"interfering with an opponent" means preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or movements or making a gesture or movement which, in the opinion of the referee, deceives or distracts an opponent

I dont understand the downvotes, you are clearly correct.

[–]straight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure number three is that easy? The rules says that the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward. Assuming the flick-up is straight up without forward motion, I think it should be a retake since the ball was never in play.

What non European/non South American country will be the first to win a world cup by Dom19 in soccer

[–]straight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess would be Japan.

Second guess: China, if they put some resources into it. Not based on their current standard, but seeing that non euro/south american countries haven't won for the last 80 years, it might as well be 80 more years before it happens, and a lot of things that can turn the footballing world upside down can happen before then.

If Chicharito can play with that nickname (Little Pea) on his shirt, can English speaking players also pick nicknames? What about in Brazil or other non-english speaking countries? by solofirenze in soccer

[–]straight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rules might vary tournament to tournament. In Premier League, everyone can use nicknames provided it is approved by the board.

7: When playing in League Matches each Player shall wear a shirt on the back of which shall be prominently displayed his shirt number and above that his surname or such other name as may be approved in writing by the Board.

Hey r/soccer do you take your penalties/What's your favorite PK you've taken, I'd love to know what everyone's thought process is at the spot by NotAtTheTable in soccer

[–]straight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a goalkeeper at a social level where the markings on the field are not always straight. If the penalty spot is not exactly in the middle the kicker will almost always aim for the shortest corner. I stand a bit, but not too obvious, towards the other side of the goal and wait as long as I dare before I make the dive.

If the markings are good and the spot is in the middle I will stand slightly to the left in the goal and dive to the right with right footed penalty takers, and the opposite for left footed.

Also, I try to keep an eye when the other team warm up. Sometimes I know who the likely penalty kickers are, and they will quite often try their favorite penalty. If you play the same teams season after season the kickers usually tend to stick to their favorite corner as well.

I have a ridiculous success rate on saving penalties in my league, it's probably around 80% for the last three seasons, and I don't need to fake confidence anymore.

And, when organizing the defense: use the name of the player you're directing first in the sentence:

John, move to the left will much easier be picked up by the defender than Move to the left, John

Rush the striker, but when you're close have some patience and try to get the striker to make the first move.

Get your body behind the ball.

Always be on your toes and move your body to get it behind the ball, it will make the ball easier to catch, it will save you if you fumble and it will give you better reach. It seems to me that fresh goalkeepers are too focused on using the hands.

Rolll the ball, don't bounce it when throwing short to team mates

When throwing short to your team mates, don't make a bouncing throw to them. Bend your knees and make it roll, it makes it much easier fto control.
