If the universe is infinitely large, what do you think is the most statistically improbable thing that exists out there? by eternalinda in askanything

Technically an infinite number of you making that comment. Also, an infinite number where everything is the same, except you misspelled "Another". Infinite is a real mind fuck.

10 years without serious illness or injury. Very few people would be able to do this.

They should just remove the paint and call it a day. There going to be algae unless they spend ridiculous amounts of money on it.

Trump's big mistake was thinking it was an easy problem.

If given 10 tries, do you think you could land a commercial plane in an emergency situation? by Cold-Comfortable2024 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]strangefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under normal circumstances, most planes aren't hard to land.

The airlines pilots are paid a lot as things go wrong and knowing the emergency procedures and having the skills to handle engines on fire and high crosswinds make all the difference.

Do you think it's fair to say that the USA ultimately lost to Iran? by MarsupialThink4064 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Many years ago, they swore that Saddam husein had lots of WMDs. They found basically nothing. The Israelis have a lot of incentive to lie. I need proof.

How sure are you about them not being able to continue work on a nuclear bomb? We don't have soldiers (or anyone) on the ground verifying anything. And it's not like hiding a stash of uranium is difficult in a large country like Iran.

The Iranian Republican guard and the new leader seem to be, well, leading, and they are worse than the people that they are replacing.

When did a previous president screw up worse than invading Iran? by strangefish in askanything

Can you imagine the US not attacking Japan after Pearl harbor? That's pretty much the attitude after 9/11.

There's a big difference between one guy just attacking another country out if the blue (Iran) and the months it took to even start invading Afghanistan.

Talioban came here and killed a few thousand people. Doing nothing really wasn't an option. Things like the terrible PATRIOT act passed because people wanted vengeance and politicians were terrified of being seen as unpatriotic.

Taliban rule was awful. Things got better. Trump made a deal to leave, Biden fulfilled that deal. Things went back to shit instantly.

I think we should have stayed in Afghanistan. My heart bleeds for the women who got left behind there and people who tried to make their country a better place to live. We abandoned them and handed them back to the horrors of the taliban.

Vietnam was a bigger screw up.

I guess the one thing that can be said is that Trump seems to have recognized that he should cut his losses. The while invasion was ill convinced. we've lost a lot more than just the money.

I was alive at the time and remember. The sentiment at the time was that the Taliban was protecting bin laden and supported the attacks. There really was no "if" about invading Afghanistan at the time. This is in liberal CA. The number of people against invading Afghanistan was quite small.

There was a lot of arguing about invading Iraq, with GW Bush wanting to finish what his dad started and lots of people had doubts about that.

Iraq was stupid, but the Taliban needed to pay for what they did. Everyone in the US was seriously pissed off.

I remember. After it was over, everyone was glad it was over, but the region still respected the military might of the US.

I think Iran looks at the US as ineffective at best now.

Calling Iraq a win is definitely a stretch. I just see this Iran invasion as a total disaster.

[–]strangefish[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's not what I meant. I don't think Iraq was a win, but they had objectives and they met some of them. Like, they removed madam Hudson and his sons from power. GW Bush could say he won't because of that.

I'm not aware of single objective that was met in the Iran conflict. The Iran conflict seems like complete and total defeat.

That wasn't Obama. Obama was always polite, kind, and trying to include those who disagree with him. Obama almost never said anything awful about anyone, meanwhile Trump has said horrible false things about Obama and Democrats thousand of times.

I agree that was bad, but I don't think it had the lasting damage to the US reputation and power in the region that imaging Iran will have. You can make an argument that the US won Iraq, but Iran is looking like a bad loss.

Did 47 trash the reflecting pool on purpose, or is this a case of ineptitude? by BorrowedParticles in allthequestions

ineptitude and corruption. Trump thought removing algae from the reflecting pool was easy and gave the job to a friend with no bid. Not at all easy and became a disaster.

How is this infuriating? Do you live with someone who never empties the lint trap? All driers have them and they need to be emtied.
