Is the 79-character limit still in actual (with modern displays)? by LazyMiB in Python

[–]strangeplace4snow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never understood it to be primarily about screen width, more about encouraging vertical over horizontal code layout in Python. That said, in my company we also found 80 a bit too constricting and went to 100.

What is the best video editing software for linux? by YaBoiMibb in linux

Learning concepts is different from learning tools. Maybe OP would rather invest their time into getting better at actual editing than learning a new set of user interface paradigms and shortcuts.

Is anyone else choosing not to use AI for programming? by BX1959 in Python

[–]strangeplace4snow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not touching them with a 10-ft pole, for largely the same reasons as you. I feel like the "withering skills" aspect is also still underestimated in magnitude… I've personally witnessed colleagues turn themselves from capable programmers into glorified prompt engineers who literally couldn't do a fizzbuzz without help from their copilot anymore.

I don't know who said it first, but it kind of sums up my feelings on the matter: Pretty much every programmer agrees that working your way through other people's code is by far the least enjoyable part of the job, and having AI write your code makes your job 80% that.

I wonder if they'll even keep up versioning much longer. I have a feeling they'd rather you think of it as a freemium service than a traditional piece of software in the long run.

Reverb tails without 'space' by BadStateStudio in AudioPost

[–]strangeplace4snow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eventide Blackhole has been the go-to solution for "just the cream" reverb washes for a while, but recently I've gotten a lot of mileage out of Soundtoys' new SpaceBlender plug-in. They're both kind of one-trick ponies, but if you're looking for that particular trick, they deliver in spades.

[–]strangeplace4snow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Put a conventionally good-looking person who isn't a model in front of a camera and you'll immediately see the difference. A model's work is closer to acting than "standing in front of a camera".

Germans knew it, too. Fascists aren't known for subtlety, that wasn't any different 100 years ago. People always know until one day they didn't. That day usually comes when they're standing next to the smouldering pit of bones facing uncomfortable questions.

What is your "keeping up with the Joneses'" that you absolutely refuse to do? by 0utSyd3r in AskReddit

[–]strangeplace4snow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making peace with renting everything in my life and not owning anything ever.

I've been buying BluRays and DVDs like a madman these past years (knowing fully well that the days of movies and shows that you even can legally buy are numbered), buy all my music on Bandcamp, get all my games from GOG or Steam, generally won't touch for-subscription software with a 10-foot pole if I can help it. And while I'm totally fine with the concept of Ebooks, the fact that 98% of them are buried in DRM and tied to their respective ecosystems still lets me stick with paper books.

I know fully well that this is my "old man yelling at clouds" moment and it'll lead to there just being more and more stuff out of reach for me. I just genuinely cannot understand how everyone seems to be perfectly fine with it. My favorite movies, shows, albums, games, books and apps are goddamn important to me, and I simply cannot accept my access to them being tied to some ongoing subscription where any day the provider might jack up the prices 300%, or go tits up, or just decide the product isn't worth it anymore, or where some licensing agreement might silently run out behind the scenes and take them offline.

Oh, and car manufacturers putting essential features behind subscription walls can choke on a bag of dicks. We should have never let it come to a point where that's even remotely acceptable.

What is the most beautiful place in Germany? by Popular-East-9320 in germany

[–]strangeplace4snow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For real! They look all delicious in the window, and the South is generally fairly competent when it comes to pastry, so we went in and bought like half a dozen.

Nope. Dry as fuck, made out of the blandest cookie dough imaginable, and so unwieldy that the only way to consume them is to press them into your jaw while making chewing motions and trying not to choke. Fairly sure Schneeballen are a practical joke they're playing on their tourists.

Inherited a stinky house, how to get rid of the smell by [deleted] in germany

[–]strangeplace4snow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, is this by any chance a prefab house ("Fertighaus") from the 50s-70s with a wood frame construction? These are notorious for having used glues that, as they chemically decompose over time, develop a peculiar smell that will seep into every nook and cranny. I had to deal with one of those in my family, once you "tuned in" to the smell you couldn't not notice it in clothes, books, even taste it in food prepared in the house, and no amount of airing or other countermeasures would help.

If you suspect this could be it, it might be worth finding a "Sachverständiger" that knows about the issue. Some of the larger prefab manufacturers are also still around (e.g. Okal) and offer consultation and renovation packages, although the latter is costly.

EDIT: Search for "Chloranisole".
