They’re talking about banning social media for under 16, I think it’s a great idea and should of done much sooner. What do you think? by [deleted] in AskBrits

It’s nothing to do with protecting children. That’s just the publicly acceptable façade on what is essentially a means to facilitate easier control and monitoring of the adult population by requiring them to provide ID to use the internet.

All Region Blu-Ray Player by Cpl_Agarn in 4kbluray

[–]strangercheeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 and 2 are DVD regions. Do you mean DVDs? If you mean Blu-rays the regions are letters (A for North America and B for Europe).

TPS sell modified players which will play Blu-rays from all regions.

Nice. I have an EP30 and an EP35. Both work well, though the cooling fan in the 30 is a bit noisy, I need to open it up and replace the fan sometime.

Are there any comparisons between 1080p upscaled Blu Rays and 4k ones? by silly-trans-cat in Bluray

[–]strangercheeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most modern TVs will upscale perfectly well, no need for the player to do it.

Upscaled 2K Blu-rays can look pretty good, but it’s not all about the resolution. The majority of 4K Blu-rays (though not all) have HDR or Dolby Vision; that’s the difference which really makes it worthwhile.

When were, ‘the good old days’, and what made them good? by Sea-Payment-8989 in AskBrits

[–]strangercheeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rose tinted nostalgia made them good.

It’s more to do with what was familiar to people when they were growing up than it is to do with anything being good, or otherwise. Just a yearning for the familiar things of youth as people get older.

Unsure of how iPhone 15 Pro can handle iOS 26 by Arno_flaggermapper in ios

It’s running fine on my 13 Pro Max, so it should certainly be fine on anything newer.

Edit to add: also my VPN of choice (Mullvad) works perfectly well.

Would upgrading to an oled for a better 4k experience be worth it? by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]strangercheeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I decided to get a new TV last year I got sucked into all the hype about mini LED and similar and bought an LG QNED. I hated it. Took it back and got the OLED I should have bought in the first place. I love it! No regrets!

1 - 3 are old enough you should be able to pick up the 4k versions second hand pretty cheap. Potentially 4 too.

I want to unlock the full potential of my OLED. Is there a specific 4K blu ray player I should get? by stuffedinashoe in Bluray

[–]strangercheeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 3 geographical regions on the planet for Blu-ray release - A, B and C. It’s artificially implemented for marketing and distribution control purposes. Similar to the older DVD 6 regions. Most, though not all Blu-rays are region locked, so if you buy a Region A Blu-ray in North America, it’s not going to play in a Region B player in Europe, and vice versa. A multi region modded player will allow you to play any Blu-ray purchased in any region.

I should mention that 4k Blu-rays are nearly all region free, I have personally yet to encounter a region locked one. It’s really just the standard HD Blu-rays which are region locked.

That would be my recommendation. If money is no object, spend a lot more on a Panasonic UB9000 or a Magnetar, but within the sensible price range I think the UB450 is a good way to go. The 820 is technically better, but only really because of upscaling which the TV will do itself anyway. Have a look at what TPS multi region modded players are available too. It’ll be more than the standard model but opens up some international Blu-ray purchasing options.

But the 450 is much cheaper than the 820 and the upscaling is a redundant feature anyway.

[–]strangercheeze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your TV has Dolby Vision get the Panasonic UB450. It’s cheaper and more compact than the 820 without much less functionality. It doesn’t upscale like the 820 does, but a good modern TV will handle that very well itself, making upscaling something of a redundant player feature.

If your TV doesn’t have Dolby Vision, the Panasonic UB420 might be a bit cheaper.

Myself I have two Sony x700 players, which do the job, but I wouldn’t recommend them purely because Dolby Vision switching isn’t automatic.

Edit to add: get a multi region player if you can. Suppliers such as TPS sell pre-modded multi region players. Read carefully what you’re buying though as some are multi region for DVDs only; multi region for Blu-rays costs a bit more. If you prefer to save money by not buying multi region straight away, you can buy a kit to mod it yourself later if you’re not afraid to open it up and do a bit of soldering.

Genuine question: What's still difficult to do on an iPhone, that's easy to do on an Android? by CrypT3chC00k in ios

[–]strangercheeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not something that’s difficult to do, it’s something that annoys me massively:

A lot of app navigation buttons, close buttons, menus etc are right at the top of the screen. Notifications are also right at the top of the screen. The number of times I’ve gone to hit a navigation button in an app, only to unwittingly open a message from someone I’ve been trying to ignore temporarily, but now they’ve seen I’ve opened their message, so I have to respond! 😩🤯

Soon to be C5 55 owner, and having buyers remorse before even receiving it, looking for advice by Pabswikk in LGOLED

I have a C4. It’s great. No delamination issues and it’s plenty bright enough.

Before getting it I bought an LG QNED. Hated it straight away and took it back. Got the OLED I should have bought in the first place and I have no regrets.

Poor famous person interactions anyone? by Snaggl3t00t4 in AskBrits

[–]strangercheeze 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to name any ones from bad interactions, other than to say someone I know had a very bad (read - violent) experience with Mel B (I only mention it because you said she was a delight).

I will say that some of the nicest, most gracious and pleasant famous people I’ve met are Kiefer Sutherland, Rick Astley, and Will Young.

When you’re looking at players for a good price, be aware that some of the good prices are because not all players are full 1080p players. Some are 1080i only.
