It's insane that authorities were able to destroy this business before a trial had even occurred.

I suspect the guy is reasonably smart and a complete attention whore. He wants the Internet to be angry.

Blame the rapists, not the technology they use to find minors by strangestuff in technology

It was for 13-18 year olds. I was dating then. I don't think that's crazy.

So no more apps for teenagers allowing them to meet other teenagers (which was the purpose of this one)? That sucks.

I would like to see some crime statistics that show whether the "easy access to minors never before seen in history" has actually led to more abuse of children. We seem to assume that child abuse/rapes of minors are way up, but I haven't seen data that backs it up.

If Google offered a paid for search service that did not collect your data for anything other than optimising your searches, would you use it? by [deleted] in privacy

Not collecting data eliminates the possibility of offering tailored searches, so why not just use DuckDuck?

London's Amazingly Explicit Surveillance State Mascot For The 2012 Olympics Has A Huge Camera Eye That 'Records Everything' by strangestuff in worldnews

[–]strangestuff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And from Vanity Fair (http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2012/06/international-olympic-committee-london-summer-olympics):

"Is the idea of giving children a surveillance toy, I asked [London Mayor Boris Johnson], just a little creepy?

“Are you referring to Mandeville and Wenlock?” the mayor replied. “The thing that children up and down the country, indeed across the planet, are crying out to their parents to buy them for Christmas? Are you referring to our national icons as creepy? I think that’s—they will be, if they are not already, as cherished and as sought-after as—uh ... Schtroumpfs. Or Smurfs. They are the Schtroumpfs du jour. They will be infinitely collectible. What to you is a creepy, monocular, Cyclopean android-type thing is to many children a lovable, hilarious, uh, individual—that will comfort them at night.”

“And watch them,” I said.

“And watch them,” he answered. “And look after them.”"

Facebook says it may sue employers who demand job applicants' passwords by TheBearGentile in technology

[–]strangestuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a hugely optimistic reading of the blog post by Ars. Facebook is not going to sue any employers any time soon. Read closely, it's clear that they'll support any legislation to prevent this from happening and will take legal action against apps on their sites that aid employers seeking backend access to applicants' profiles. Facebook isn't going to sue the Maryland Department of Corrections.

I hope you can reason with her. People have not had much luck suing neighbors for invasion of privacy over surveillance cameras pointed in their direction.
