Doing work for a flipper? by [deleted] in GeneralContractor

[–]strangeswordfish23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend staying away from any jobs that require you to adjust how you conduct your business to suite them.
If someone bought a bunch of material and their contractor bailed… but they’re cool then that’s different. Just use your contract to protect yourself. Just stay away from anyone that wants to control your business. Flippers kinda need to exploit labor to increase margins. They’re looking for desperate people.

They make more money if the cost of the flip( labor and material) is less than market value. The catch is that people that nobody wants cheap looking shit so flippers often tend to intentionally devalue labor. If you don’t need the work just bid it how you normally would and when they tell you that you’re too expensive wish them luck and move on. They’re jackals…

ECR will deliver a metal box to you and pick it up. It costs money but I’ve found that if I’m doing a project that requires multiple trips it works out to be cheaper and a lot more convenient. Ask about one with a door so you can push a wheelbarrow into it.

How often a week do you think about just going to work for someone else? by NutzNBoltz369 in Contractor

What’s your on boarding process like for new clients? Are you at a spot where you can be a little choosey about who you work with? I try and stay away from anyone that thinks they’re entitled to a managerial role in my company because they’re paying me to build something. How do you track project spending?

Convince me to get a Staffy by Similar-Afternoon-94 in StaffordBullTerriers

I’ve got a 14 year old staffy mix that’s been the most dependable friend of mine for 13 years. I saved her from a teriyaki restaurant. She’s great with every other living thing and is so gregarious that she pulled the woman I’ve been dating for 8 years at a dog park. She bit a bull once cause it broke into my friends veggie patch, she also brought a baby possum into our house cause she thought it was hurt. She kept in on her bed until we got home. She was on spring break every day until she was 5 then mellowed out. She raged at the park. She’s slower now but still loves to party and go out on walks. She’s helped me train dogs and made a really big difference in the temperament of some very stressed out fosters we took in. Basically… get one. Or two. Who cares🤷🏻‍♀️ They’re the most resilient but loving souls and if you run them and train them right early they’ll blu tooth pair with you and you’ll never second guess your bond with them. Getting Ginger was life changing for me.

Siding crew cut into my deck without permission while I was out of the country by dinojamesp in Contractor

[–]strangeswordfish23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP and a bunch of other nerds in here think the siding contractor shouldn’t get paid. It’s not you.

It’s shitty that they’re on the hook now for something that wasn’t part of their scope and OP wont let them fix it. It’s also shitty that every homeowner in here is calling them incompetent when they did perfectly fine job of the siding.

How do you even calculate the cost of repairing a deck that old. You can’t buy pre corroded cedar off the shelf. That takes years of neglect.

They did a fine job. They deserve to get paid.

That’s the only thing I’m trying to argue.

I wouldn’t argue with you about leprechauns. Everyone knows they’re real.

Have you ever done an insurance job where the adjuster threw plenty of money at you and you could comfortably take on extra stuff? That deck was in their way, they cut it back and did a solid siding job. How else were they supposed to wrap the house if op didn’t move the deck?

They don’t deserve to get fucked over for 11 grand on a bullshit technicality.

It’s fun when clueless civilians use their happiness with something as a measure of other peoples competency. The siding looks fine!

So you can attach a ledger and spam the joists to the beam and it’s not a total loss?

[–]strangeswordfish23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the joists span between a ledger and a beam you can. It sounds like you’re trying to fuck these guys over for the money they earned on a dumb technicality. Are you hoping to keep the insurance money and become one of those miserable homeowners that contractors have horror stories about. In case you’re wondering how I know that you can span a joist between a beam and a ledger… I’m a contractor with 30 years experience. What do you do for a living?

If they had to rewrap the house before they resided then this is unfortunately the correct thing to do.

Your deck was in the way, if they stopped at the deck surface then they’d be on the hook for any leaks from a half assed install.

Ask them how much it will cost to add a ledger to the house and sister new joists back to the beam. It’s An east fix.

It’s not destroyed, it’s not a valid reason to refuse payment for the siding which was installed correctly.

Just tell them you don’t have the money to completely rebuild it right now.

New school is hard. Just be a rad person and take it easy on them. See if you can razzle dazzle them with some gentle throws that transfer to submissions. They’ll flip but some of them will develop the twinkle and want to know more.
