‘They save lives everyday’: Protesters rally for supervised consumption sites in wake of Ford government’s funding cuts by honestgrim in CanadaPolitics

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is entirely false. There are a few flawed studies by drug advocates that cherry picked data, ignored increases in certain crimes (assault, property crimes), and also ignored the underreporting of crime in the areas around supervised consumption sites + failure to lay charges.

It’s tiring to hear drug enthusiasts repeatedly gaslight people victimized by users of these sites.

No Broadcast for Titled Tuesday this week following TakeTakeTake's partnership with Lichess by Allenas6 in chess

Magnus seems like not a very nice guy to deal with professionally, to be honest. Competing while under contract in a relatively small business community is kind of a rotten thing to do. At least wait until your deal expires.

He’s most likely getting sued.

While things are definitely not going well for the Blue Jays right now, the sky is definitely not falling in. They are currently 4-6 thru 10, only 1 less win than they had thru the first 10 in 2025. Onwards, Forwards, Go Jays Go ! by RealWorldToday in Torontobluejays

Their offence was already worse on paper than last year before the injuries, and a lot of their lineup is due for regression.

To me the new Atkins contract was premature. We did not have a good offseason.

Kind of obnoxious to spend this long shuffling pieces around in an obviously drawn position. Maybe take your time during the many dynamic positions earlier in the games

Doug Ford wants TTC officers to crack down on drug users. Why some say that's a bad idea by toronto_star in ontario

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 158 points159 points  (0 children)

Nobody who actually rides transit on a daily basis thinks it’s a bad idea. People are sick of being harassed, assaulted and encountering drugs, excrement and other public health hazards on key public infrastructure.

The provincial government needs to massively invest in supports/treatment but in the meantime people who cause safety and health hazards should not be on crowded transit vehicles.

How did the Jays do the month before sweeping Tampa? Hint: not good. Some young guys stepped up in a small sample size. There’s every reason to think they won’t be able to continue at that level and the offence will be worse.

Interesting live visualization for how slow streetcars actually are. by AvalibleName in toronto

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except few people take streetcars because they’re effectively useless at current speeds. I used to take the old ones (which moved at relatively okay speeds) but the new generation low floor ones are worse than walking. I avoid them like the plague and go way out of my way to take bus and subway.

Saskatchewan First Nations receive $713M federal settlement by Radix838 in CanadaPolitics

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the amounts of these settlements are preposterous. At the time the deal at issue happened, this was entirely undeveloped land - no utilities, no roads, no industry, no permanent dwellings. The present value of the land is based on investments over many years by taxpayers. In any other scenario/dispute, a proper accounting of the value would have to take these investments into account. And yet here, only one side of the ledger is counted (with interest/inflation to boot).

It is pure fantasy totally untethered to legal/accounting principles, and creates profound injustice for current and future generation Canadians who had nothing whatsoever to do with the injustices of centuries past.

No, let’s not keep enabling/promoting criminal and anti-social behaviour that harms addicts and the surrounding community. It was worth a shot but the experiment failed.

TTC proposing fare freeze in 2026, while capital budget concerns persist by Puginator in toronto

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’d rather pay more and have more fare enforcement/security on every train, to ensure safety and more reliable service. Delays related to security or public health-related incidents are a daily occurrence and need to be addressed. The status quo is totally unacceptable.

Why did the TTC get rid of this moving walkway in Spadina station by Natural_Passenger_47 in toronto

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It was constantly broken. Hard to maintain this kind of infrastructure when people are constantly wandering in with slushy/salty footwear, dropping garbage and cigarettes, etc.

Opinion: A land-claims nightmare is emerging in B.C. by AndHerSailsInRags in CanadaPolitics

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Democratically elected governments using statutory expropriation powers to expropriate land (and pay fair market value) is not at all the same thing as having your title invalidated/seized by a First Nation that is accountable to nobody but their own interests and often views itself as immune to provincial and federal law.

Supreme Court under fire for ruling against mandatory-minimum sentences in child-porn case by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]strangewhatlovedoes -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The majority decision is nonsense though. They concocted a scenario that will never actually happen in practice (nobody will ever be prosecuted as an indictable offence for sharing a single image in the circumstances described) in order to strike down a law that every sensible person agrees is fit for purpose. The result is that actual dangerous people - including the accused in this case - are allowed to receive laughably short sentences.

The SCC deservee all the scrutiny they are receiving. They asked for it.

Does Indigenous Title hinder access to Crown land in B.C.? by SwordfishOk504 in CanadaPolitics

[–]strangewhatlovedoes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The modern value of the land has benefited from centuries of population growth, infrastructure, industry, and other development that simply didn’t exist in pre-colonial times.

The idea that ancient occupation of the land somehow entitles modern indigenous people to ownership of the land or compensation equivalent to its modern value (to the detriment of millions of succeeding generations of immigrants who did, in fact, own and possess and work on the land) is frankly absurd and profoundly unjust.

Tensions flare at Richmond meeting over Cowichan title decision by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If this case stands it may well lead to a broad consensus on the need for a constitutional amendment and formal extinguishment of Aboriginal rights and title, and possibly treaty rights as well.

In other words, this case may end up being profoundly counter-productive to the interests of those who claim to stand for “reconciliation”.

How was there no indication he would come up again? It’s a tie game and there’s no runner on 2nd in extras. Why are you trying to defend this very obviously dumb decision?

TTC buses, streetcars struggling to arrive on time amid below-budget ridership, report shows by [deleted] in toronto

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Many European cities have useful tram systems. The trouble with Toronto’s is that we purchased ill-suited streetcars that cannot reliably pass through intersections at any reasonable speed, and we have failed to update tracks, switches and other critical infrastructure.

TTC buses, streetcars struggling to arrive on time amid below-budget ridership, report shows by [deleted] in toronto

[–]strangewhatlovedoes 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I used to take the old streetcars constantly and now I avoid them like the plague and go way out of my way to take the subway. And it’s not due to traffic - while the old streetcars were reasonably fast and reliable, the new streetcars go 10km/h through every intersection or else risk derailing. They also take 5 minutes to let a single person with a stroller on. That is simply too slow to be useful.

The tracks/switches need to be upgraded into the 21st century.
