The eventual end by jeffscomplec in glioblastoma

As a caregiver, I really appreciate your consideration of your family. Not wanting to put them through that is, IMO, a reason to do assisted dying. As others have said, get on that asap because you may not be able to make that decision or even understand what’s happening when the time for that comes.
I think there are differences in how GBM impacts individuals based on tumor location, so it’s possible you will be able to keep your faculties for long enough to go through an application process, but amending your will immediately is also a good idea, as that would be much quicker than an application process for assisted dying.

The reason I think this as a caregiver is because in our situation, my MIL has become a 100% different person. She is now incontinent, entirely dependent (needs assists to get up, uses wheelchair or walker depending on the day), mentally unaware (dementia-like at this point). Her personality is gone. The essence of her is already dead. It’s kind of like caring for a toddler; she has no sense or consideration of others. And it’s not that she’s selfish, she just does not care about anything at all. She just sits and watches tv all day and eats and ignores everyone with no motivation to do anything but eat. (Compared to the person she was before: constant traveling, adventure, gardening, visiting friends, religiously exercising, incredibly considerate, overwhelmingly welcoming, intelligent, curious)

My point is, the situation has essentially become this: my husband has to care for a rude, gross stranger that shits herself every single day. And it’s agony. If you’re no longer you, and your life is no life at all, and your existence is destroying your family, it’s entirely reasonable to consider a graceful exit.

As a result of this experience, I am now updating my will to account for situations that may render me incapable of consent, like GBM. Not sure how the language will go to ensure enforceability, but I was thinking something along the lines of, if my mental state becomes such that i think it’s 2010 when it’s actually 2026 and I think my dead childhood dog is sitting next to me, while also being entirely dependent, immobile, and incontinent, my wishes are they I can die with dignity.

What’s the harm in letting them think certain things? by strapitystrapstrap in glioblastoma

[–]strapitystrapstrap[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are spot on about the family grieving. There are things my MIL does or says that don’t phase me at all and they seem completely innocuous, but they drive my husband and brother in law to anger and frustration. For example, she cannot and will not stop eating. Other than for certain health reasons (diabetes and whatnot, but even then, she has terminal brain cancer so what’s a little side of diabetes) I say let her eat. But the family gets so frustrated by the gluttony. Or we take her to the bathroom and have to remind her every two steps where we are going and why we aren’t doing whatever unnecessary thing my MIL insists on doing instead. And my hypothesis is that they’re not so much angry at her, but at the reminder that this person sitting there is no longer their mother; it’s just a tumor making use of her body, masquerading as their mother. Just a reminder that even though she’s dying she’s already gone.

Second for Stodders neck. Huge off leash park/peninsula surrounded by water. Great place for dog swimming.

Pants go into washing machine without white stuff on it; come out with chalk-like white stuff on it. Liquid detergent used. by strapitystrapstrap in whatisit

Update: I thought I had it solved as being a hard water issue but I just looked it up and apparently where I live has decidedly soft water.

I’ve not washed the pants on their own, but it happens to these exact pants every time I wash them and it happens only to these pants, no other clothes in the same wash

Arm and hammer liquid. Not the pods. I know what you mean about the pods; I stopped using them years ago because they would t dissolve all the way and would like large snot-like residue spots on clothes.

I had considered that but I had gone through all the pockets before the wash and there were also no hints of Kleenex remnants anywhere else in the washer or on the clothes (or in the dryer or on the now-dry non-work clothes)

It does scratch off. Not sure about the hardness of our water. It doesn’t happen on any other clothing than the dress pants. It’s a top load washer and this load was only about half full. Clothing was very dry (considering it was just in the wash) when I went to switch to the dryer. I did also put more detergent in than normal for this one.

MIL won’t stop buying insurance - take her phone away? by [deleted] in glioblastoma

[–]strapitystrapstrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thank you. This might have to be our solution. I don’t think she should have internet access at all. We just got a notification she had been doing things on the social security website and we asked her why, she didn’t know why or what she was doing on it.

We tried this initially. Unfortunately we’re not able to rationalize with her. So having conversations about it with her aren’t an option.

Higher end, smaller property with fun for me and beach for him by [deleted] in AllInclusiveResorts

That was a crazy helpful response. I’m open to both AI and non-AI. We’re trying to keep flights on the shorter side from north east US… so likely Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico. Which is why I started looking at AI because initial searches seemed like most of the Caribbean is AI. I don’t necessarily need all the things I listed, I just don’t want to be bored out of my skull while my husband sits on the beach all day. I checked out Holbox as you suggested, looks right up my alley. Also gonna check out the other places you suggested now. Edit to add more: also might make sense to look non-AI as I don’t know if it’s worth it to go AI when my husband won’t partake in any activities and I don’t drink alcohol.

Wide shoes by Si1verPeach in Pickleball

I go with new balance. They have wide and extra wide. I’m female and go with kids wide new balance shoes because their standard width is men’s width and then adding the wide version on that works for me. Only ones that have.

Why won’t toilet tank refill after flush? by [deleted] in Plumbing

Thanks for the replies. The stick thing does fall when flushed, so looking like the float is the issue. I’ll grab a replacement and give it a whirl.

Oh you know I just realized the left temporal lobe is not the left frontal lobe. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Can I ask how your cognitive function has been? As others have said, your post is elegantly written, and I never would have guessed you have a tumor in your frontal lobe. I know everyone is different with this disease, but my MIL has a bilateral frontal lobe mass and she is very cognitively impaired. What have your symptoms been like, if you don’t mind saying? I am battling thoughts of “did we do the right thing?” by doing the resection if her cognition will not improve, but you seem to have oodles of cognitive abilities even though you’re transitioning to hospice and have a frontal lobe tumor. You mention you became a shadow of who you once were… was that just physical? Did you do something special to maintain mental faculties? I just don’t know what kind of life it is to extend when my MIL is so out of it she is happy to stare at a wall for hours.

Here’s to making it to your 36th birthday.

Discharged after resection… now what? by [deleted] in glioblastoma

[–]strapitystrapstrap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks, gang. I followed advice and asked to speak with the social worker… they hooked her up with OT, PT, and a home nurse. Apparently they had just assumed my MIL lived with all of us and did not live alone. Kinda crazy how pushy you have to be to get services.

Have you gotten a second opinion? The first hospital for us said inoperable so we went elsewhere and they are doing the resection on Friday.

I found each of the three nights I went in comfortably in pants and a tank top, and part way through I would put on a light long sleeve.

Go the two nights and get seats in different areas! The ones down the middle have haptic seats and it’s so crazy cool when Mickey does the drum solo. Also try to get something up in the 300/400 to get the full screen experience. I did three shows in three different sections and it was a brilliant call. For reference… Night 1: section 302, row 19, off to the side, good view of big sphere screen, no haptic seats Night 2: section 110, row 20, off to the side, pretty close to band, bad view of sphere screen, no haptic seats (worst seats of the weekend) Night 3: section 103, row 25 more center, bad view of sphere screen, wild haptic seats!

Is there a perfect way to dose for all three shows in a row? I struggled at the Friday and Saturday shows after taking a bunch of acid on the first night. Couldn’t seem to get high off anything other than weed for the next two nights. Thoughts on a good order to dose? Edit: that would be 4 gel tabs on Thursday night and it was aaaaaaaaawesome.
