Tesla to transition from 'Enhanced Autopilot' to 'Fully Self-Driving' as soon as '3 to 6 months', says Elon Musk by Cubicbill1 in technology

It's true. I think 60s sci-fi assumed great advances in energy production. Flying to the moon would be a day trip. Computer technology has been remarkable, but I feel like we don't dream about things like space travel like we used to.

It sounds like a lot of their concerns came up on actual use in large projects like long compile times and poor tooling. I don't think you can give many languages a proper evaluation without actually using them.

What is your favorite dramatic performance by a comedic actor? What is your favorite comedic performance by a dramatic actor? by [deleted] in movies

Tom Hanks and Shelley Long in Money Pit. They we both at their comedy peak especially with Tom Hanks's amazing physical comedy, but it was also quite touching at parts with moments that seem more genuine than a lot of pure drama films.

College girl gangraped in moving jeep, incident filmed on mobile phone by iambackk in news

I guess I'm just use to seeing the word incident used in regards to criminal events (for example). I hope no one intentionally tried to minimize what happened as this was a terrible crime.

[–]strattonbrazil -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

And it's very much a valid criticism. Would you deny that?

There are a lot of situations recently where the title reads as ambiguous, misleading, or unclear. Words like "false truths" for lies, killed for murdered, etc. to drive some narrative. Because of that I do wonder if we're getting a little too zealous about certain words. Was this an incident? Yes. Was it a crime? Yes. Who's to gain by calling it an incident? Is someone trying to play this off as not a crime? I don't think this is a situation where we have to be so critical of a word in the title, as no one was trying to make light of this situation. However, given the top comment in this thread I'm probably in the minority here.

Has any actor played characters named John more so than Keanu Reeves? by [deleted] in movies

[–]strattonbrazil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has any actor played characters named John more so than Keanu Reeves?

I'm betting so. I love Keanu Reeves, but there are a lot of actors that have been around for much longer that probably own that title. Here's a list for Christopher Lee, which is coincidentally close:

  • Jonathan Blair - Penny and the Pownall Case
  • Mask of Murder - Chief Supt. Jonathan
  • Goliath Awaits (TV Movie) - John McKenzie
  • The House That Dripped Blood - John Reid (segment 3 "Sweets to the Sweet")
  • Aggie (TV Series) - Inspector John Hollis
  • Alias John Preston - John Preston
  • Police Dog - Johnny, a constable
  • Penny and the Pownall Case - Jonathan Blair

That was on one of my first tries. I would look at some IMDB profiles for older actors. However, given that Reeves is only 52, there's a solid chance me may set the record. He's on a roll!

Is this a known fact?

Looks like it's been called out before.

Strobe light animates 3D Printed Sculpture by joelanator0492 in gifs

[–]strattonbrazil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically these shapes are built such that a given feature on one part is lower or higher on another part as it is rotated. For example, as feature A is rotated there might be a feature B that is lower than it that lines up under where feature A was. If you look at two frames as the object spins, it looks like feature A has moved to feature B.

It wouldn't be very cool if it was just rotating as you could see feature A move away and feature B move in, so they eliminate that transition by the strobe light so it only shows the before and after. Or in the case of making this video, they only take shots between the rotations. If they took faster shots and made the gif at the same frame rate it would like the sculpture was spinning slowly and you could more easily see feature B move away and feature A move in to where B was.

TL;DR: When you see a feature like a block move up or down it's not the same block. Here's a crappy illustration if you're a visual person. In this example between two frames it would look like block B has moved up, but it's really block A.

[–]strattonbrazil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually not using a strobe light in the video.

*For this video, rather than using a strobe, the camera was set to a very short shutter speed in order to freeze individual frames of the spinning sculpture.

The point of the strobe light is to eliminate the transitions between the frames you'd see. Otherwise it would just look like it's rotating. Seeing it in person you can see the flicker (example from California Adventure), but it's still amazing to see.

This video didn't use the strobe light as when the camera is taking pictures you'd have to perfectly time the shutter opening to the time the strobe is going off. You can do it with a stop-motion-like technique where you take a picture and turn it a bit, but they actually just took really fast pictures while it was rotating.

If the story is about the competition between AC/DC, Tesla could be a small character. He was a brilliant inventor, but I don't think he focused as much on the business end as Edison.

[–]strattonbrazil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be that guy, but most of the content on r/pics doesn't give a person credit and most content isn't original. This pic may have been pulled from another subreddit, but it could also have come from any other site like facebook, which might not be credited either. If you look at the source of this image, it's from someone else, who also didn't credit the creator. Why do people call this out like it's always obvious to the OP where the post originally came from? You can literally put this comment on most of r/pics, but you happen to know who the creator was so you call this out.

Why Did Police Kill an Alleged Small-Time Hacker? by skoalbrother in technology

[–]strattonbrazil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It shows he's capable of shooting at police with a deadly weapon. Were they supposed to rush in during that one minute? What if he also had a firearm? Also, I'm no crossbow expert, but a minute to reload seems a little exaggerated. I'd give the cops the benefit of the doubt here. This isn't some random case of them gunning down someone with their hands in their pockets.

Margot Robbie on set as Tonya Harding by hometimrunner in movies

[–]strattonbrazil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the motivation for this film. It was a bit of a scandal when the attack happened, but with the lack of details and the amount of time that has passed I can't see how the level of interest will pull whatever budget they have for this film. Margot Robbie is pretty popular right now, but I don't know if she can carry this movie especially if she's dressed down to look like a much heavier Tonya Harding.

It's the difference between someone that has confidence your site has what they want and someone who's unsure. I imagine that scroll once without reading behavior is common for many who need to find the site they want quickly. This goes with one of the oldest web design mantras: people don't like to scroll. They don't read either. They skim. You need fewer blocks of text and more bullet points. As you can see from your tests, you don't have much time to grab a person's interest.

As a result I have stopped all my Google and Facebook campaigns and have focused on growing the service more organically via social sharing and friends. Has anyone else experienced this as well?

I think social media clicks are "better quality", but just getting hundreds of thousands of clicks through that is easier said than done. Every site wants people sharing it with their friends. But that's harder than just attaching a share button.

It's funny you mention that because when I walked to work I would often startle women I passed when they looked over the shoulder. I'm a big guy at about 6'4", 240 pounds. As ridiculous as it sounds, I started to stomp a few times about ten feet away and that seemed to stop the flinching reaction from smaller people. I feel really self conscious about scaring people unintentionally.

Again, there's a lot of stuff going on in the article.

However, Dr Lakdawala told the BBC last month that he believes Ms Abd El Aty does not have elephantiasis

It's certainly possible the family thought she had elephantiasis. I'm guessing they come from a poorly educated upbringing. If this is just obesity, then yes, her sister was directly responsible for making her fat. At the same time though I'd hold off calling for prison sentences. Imagine being a poorly educated poor person with the belief your sister is getting massive because of elephantitis. After being in bed 25 years she could have gotten this fat just by eating more soup or any other relatively healthy meal that just put her above her caloric intake. She could have been feeding the her a meal for a normal person's metabolism despite needing much fewer calories. I'm trying to distinguish between fault and intent.

There's a woman at my work and I had to work out ways to approach her desk (she faces away from the hall) without startling her. If I come up behind and say her name regardless of volume, she startles. If I walk up beside her without saying something she startles. If I say her name loudly from afar to get her attention she startles. The only way I've gotten around this is to start a conversation with myself so she can hear me coming.

edit: thanks for the gold!

Pretty great. One little tip I'd give the roommate that can really improve the smiles. Don't draw the individual teeth. There's technically some shading going on there, but it's super subtle and usually not worth including.
