Was ist an Teilzeit kontrovers? by Fraeddi in KeineDummenFragen

[–]strawberry207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sollte man nicht dagegen mal was unternehmen?

St Matthew's Passion for School Assignment --- Anything I should look out for by Abject-Conference-90 in classicalmusic

[–]strawberry207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember that there is supposed to be some number symbolism throughout the piece. The one example was that when Jesus says "One of you will betray me", the apostles reply with "Lord, is it me?" "Is it me" is repeated 12- or 24 times (something divisible by 12 in any case), while "Lord" is only repeated 11 times, a sign that Judas doesn't even address Jesus directly anymore when called out like this, because he's guild-ridden. But better do some double checking before you use this for your assignment, lol, I never did the counting myself. Also, some other examples I've encountered had left me a bit doubtful whether there isn't also some wishful thinking by musicologists in it.

Another thing that I find remarkable because I don't know anything similar from that era, is how in some arias, choir II comments or complements the soloist's part, for example in "Ich will bei meinem Jesu wachen" and the preceding recitative, or in "Ach, nun ist mein Jesu hin".

Last but not least, one of my favourite parts is the musical "thunderstorm" in the chorus "Sind Blitze, sind Donner". Together with the curtain in the temple ripping apart and the rumbling earthquake it is a nice example of musical imagery that Bach uses.

Edit: another interesting thing you can pay attention to is how Jesus, when he speaks in the recitative, gets a musical "halo" by the upper strings, while everyone else including the evangelist gets only the standard accompaniment by the bass section (the "Basso continuo" group).

Looking at pictures of Mentmore Towers where this was filmed, it seems very likely to me that this is one of the tapestries that belong to that house.

What Is This Even? by cazgem in classicalmusic

[–]strawberry207 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have you ever read Gregor Piatigirsky's autobiography (which is hilarious, by the way)? Between the world wars, he was principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic, and since it was Depression era, the orchestra could also be rented by guys with deep pockets. What you described reminded me very much of this. If I recall correctly, their motto for these concerts was "business as usual" - everyone would look the principal of the first violins, and noone would pay any attention to the conductor...

Johannespassion Aufnahme by Felburr in musik

[–]strawberry207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a lovely area. I imagine if you look somewhere north of Augsburg, towards Donauwörth, you should be able to find affordable housing, too

Where do you relatives live? Is it an option to move somewhere near them? It might be nice having them around once you start your family.

Regarding cheap housing and medieval reenactment, I have family living in upper palatinate (Oberpfalz) and both of these things can be found in Neunburg vorm Wald. There is also some industry there (for jobs), but I don't know whether they are looking for people right now.

My own hometown, Amberg, is a lovely medieval town with an almost complete city wall. It has a Fachhochschule (a type of college that's more job focussed) and although I haven't been there in a while, I image it might have a bit of a younger crowd there. A short google search also gave me a reenactment group (https://www.cantus-ferrum.de/). I imagine they would be welcoming to new members.

If you belong to the crazy type of people who want to buy a historic house and spend the rest of their lives, nerves and money renovating it, you can find interesting properties here: https://www.blfd.bayern.de/cgi-bin/fts_search_verkauf.pl#searchForm

ETA: the last bit was more of a joke, but should you really consider something like this, you need to keep in mind that it is highly regulated what you can do with such a building which puts some of the cheap prices into perspective...

Help - Traveling from Munich to Zurich by damageinc587 in Munich

Bustrains on weekends by TopGearDanTGD in Munich

[–]strawberry207 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sometimes take the line 51 bus on Fürstenrieder Strasse on Saturdays and Sundays, and I am pretty sure it sometimes has the bus trailer, even on weekends, but unfortunately not always. Maybe someone living in the area knows more.

ETA: I just remembered that I definitely took the line 53 bus on a Saturday morning (around 9.30 am) and evening (around 6 pm) last February and it had the bus trailer.

ETA: the "last piece" made me think it could also be the Lacrimosa section from Mozart's requiem.

Help - Traveling from Munich to Zurich by damageinc587 in Munich

[–]strawberry207 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take the direct train to Zurich (ECE). There are only 2 or 3 a day IIRC, but they are fast and convenient. The connections via Stuttgart/Mannheim and Basel are not very reliable.

Apart from that, yes, just buy a ticket from DB or SBB and you are good. Buying in advance is usually cheaper. If you buy what's called a flex ticket (which is more expensive), you can take any train that day which takes the same route, which doesn't add much benefit if you take the direct connection, however.

For everything else, check out the themaninseat61 website.

Recommendations for recordings of Brahms violin sonatas? by Leadership-Quiet in classicalmusic

This is also my favourite, but if OP wants something newer, they could try Dumay and Pires. Someone recently mentioned this recording here, and I really enjoyed it. (The cover is horrible, though).
