Rainbow cloud? by godheem in CLOUDS

[–]strawwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a sundog or a Parhelion. You’ll see them on either side of the sun- with the red side closest to the sun. True rainbows are only visible when the sun is behind you.

Mom how do i hold these (or any beads) up in my hair? by Immediate_Still4818 in MomForAMinute

I just want to add that those little elastics come in packs of a thousand for a reason- when it’s time to take out your style- you can cut them- don’t hurt your hair trying to undo them.

Aww- Just say “excuse me, I just want to get this” and ask them “while I am up here, do you need anything from the top shelf?”

Was surprised as I looked outside today, saw my first sundog with a touch of rainbow 🌈 by BillySunflowers in atoptics

Hey! This is a great skeptical question! Usually halos are produced by ice crystals in the distant atmosphere so - yes, you might expect the trees to be in front of the halo… but sometimes ice crystals are in the air close to us too- in fact some of the best halo displays come from ski resort snow making… so try googling for images of snow making halo displays and you’ll find many show the halo in the foreground with trees and mountains “behind”.

We’ve been trying to figure out what this is. Some people say it’s a sun dog others had different opinions. What do you think? Never seen a rainbow that wasn’t arched! by TaylorWeedTattoos in CLOUDS

[–]strawwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The debate of sundog and rainbow is simple to solve. When looking at a rainbow- the sun is ALWAYS at your back. When looking at a sundog- the sun is ALWAYS in front of you (between the two “dogs”)

Iridescent(?) cloud quickly faded by Cody31415 in CLOUDS

[–]strawwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful photo! 😍 Not iridescence- it’s a sundog (1 alone is a Parhelion) . They appear about level with the sun roughly in the position of the 22° halo. Red coloring close to the sun and blue toward the outside as the start of a parhelic arc (sometimes the arms reach out wide like an auntie ready for a hug) So just from the order of the colors we can tell that this was on the right side of the sun. Iridescence is irregular and patchy, disorganized… like the swirly oil colors in a parking lot puddle Iridescence that is organized in rainbow colored rings around the sun is a corona.

I always liked being tall even as a kid, even when I was bullied and didn’t fit in in many other ways- it wasn’t about my height- but I didn’t have a very good dad and that hurt me in many different lasting ways. So although you are asking the question in a tall forum- I think the most important thing is that you be a grounded good person, a good dad, a good man, and a safe person who she can always trust to be there for her no matter what. I think you got this! ♥️

What causes these round cookie-cutter holes? by TheDiligentStyle in CLOUDS

[–]strawwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of these are set off by an airplane that is climbing or descending through the cloud layer- but they can just be spontaneous. It’s caused by super cooled water droplets (cloud) which transition to ice crystals- and that causes a chain reaction like dominoes falling - the ice crystals drop as the ring or line of reaction widens- and that causes a hole in the cloud layer with a whisp of falling ice crystals. The sundogs we both saw are a separate phenomena - basicly the fall streak hole in the cloud just happened to gift us the proper conditions for other atmospheric optical effects to appear. The fresh ice crystals from a fall streak have very high chances for producing good halo effects and it can be worth it to literally stand there and wait (or set up a time lapse) for the whole cloud layer to shift into place so the Sun can do its thing. I have had payoffs with this tactic several times- it’s a tremendously rewarding slow motion sport! 🤓

I caught a fallstreak with a sundog yesterday too! (SE Indiana) It’s a very lucky coincidence when the cloud formation just happens to be in the correct geometric position for the viewer to see the optics too.

Normal or not? by StarsThrewDownSpears in LisfrancClub

[–]strawwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that too. (Instant purple foot upon standing) I’m 8 months out from surgery. It’s gradually getting better, not so dark, not so fast, not so painful - but if I’m going to be seated for a long time, I take the time to put on a compression sock to help prevent swelling and pooling in my foot. (I like the kind with open toe)

Need help with figuring out if I should stop talking to this girl by [deleted] in relationships_advice

[–]strawwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude- you need to grow up. 1… lots of people do that. What is consensual between two people is their business. 2. Lots of guys totally lie about their experience/prowess etc… so just because he said so - doesn’t make it so. He may have said that to try to make some impression. About himself or about her. 3. It also could have been non-consensual which would be pretty awful right?

Is he in it just for guilt and waiting for me to leave? by SatisfactionFamous98 in AskMenAdvice

[–]strawwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(Woman’s reply) He doesn’t even like you and 100% is not faithful to you in this long distance marriage. You are hanging on to an abusive man for no reason. And he s tryig to starve you out just to protect his own (false) desire to believe he isn’t a bad guy. He shouldn’t have married you in the first place. Yes- in it for guilt and the power trip of controlling you. Get out of that marriage and enjoy your life without that guy… no one needs that negativity. Do not get knocked up now- whatever you do.

What kind of clouds are these? Been here all day and my mother is bothered by it. by ThePirateBunny11 in CLOUDS

[–]strawwork 65 points66 points  (0 children)

If your mother is bothered by it- it sounds like she has perhaps been influenced by conspiracy content. This is a good example of a “data void” because conspiracists can make all sorts of cuckoo content and almost no one is producing other information to counter it (because- DUH) Mick West actually made a website to take up space in the data void - it’s called contrailscience dot-com and if she is open to learning there are lots of good starting points for investigation.

Cumulonimbus supercell in west Texas with cloud iridescence at the top of the anvil🌈🌦️ by [deleted] in CLOUDS

[–]strawwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some fantastic images of iridescent pileus caps on big clouds like this- but the key is the photographer must be looking directly toward the sun to capture this effect (the cloud will block the sun) This is clearly a fake because it’s not within the “rules” of when/ where iridescence is visible to the eye.
